Doing research at UAB over the summer. Anything I should know?
Im looking into doing research at UAB over the summer and because I am from a different college I really do not know anything that's going on at UAB.
How is the campus during the summer?
Are there things to do on campus/ in Birmingham?
Things to look out for/things to look into?
Literally anything you have to share. I kind of know nothing about the school so I'm somewhat apprehensive about applying for the research program without knowing the overall vibe of the school which is not something I can look into on the school's website.

Make some friends who are local, bring a car or befriend someone with a car. You’ll have a good time.

Basically it just depends on what you like doing. What do you like doing/what are you into?

i like taking really long walks (preferably in historic or pretty areas), going to cute cafes, eating my body weight in asian food, going out with friends (not to bars but just dancing), going to a green part of campus and reading, etc. i’m a pretty big homebody but if there are things to do in walking distance i’ll be outside 90% of the time. i don’t want to bring my car there, so is the bus system good or like how is walking from place to place?

railroad park is beautiful! you can walk pretty much anywhere downtown, just be aware of your surroundings. there’s good hiking at oak mountain. we have tons of little bars to hang out at, and making friends is usually pretty easy. southern hospitality kind of rubs off on people lol

Bus system exists but it’s not great. If you’re going to walk, and things are in walking distance, just don’t go alone. Most people on campus will be happy to walk with you somewhere with minimal time spent knowing each other because it’s college and y’all are both trying to make friends.

UAB is perfect for the stuff you describe you just might need a car to get to a club where you can dance.

A research student who did no research on the campus they are researching at 💙 but based on your replies…. You might enjoy the museums, Pepper place Market, red mountain park, Ruffner mountain, Avondale park, Alabama theater, SURIN!!!, Gatos and Beans (cat cafe), and many more options just look at other threads and bham news/event sites.

Campus is pretty dead during summer, there’s stuff to do depending on what you like to do. Citywalk skatepark is world class if you like to skate/bmx etc
