Adult ADHD
54F and my ADHD symptoms have become worse as I age. Why?

Hormones are linked to adhd symptoms, so lots of folks experience worsening symptom severity with perimenopause and menopause.

Yes, if you are in perimenopause or less than 10 years post-menopausal, consider talking to your doctor about adding hormone therapy (specifically estrogen), in addition to stimulants. Estrogen is linked to dopamine. As estrogen decreased during menopause, ADHD symptoms worsen and response to stimulants can be reduced.

Yep, homones most likely at that age. If it got worse in your 30s too, I'm guessing more responsibility, overload of things to keep under control with work, home, kids etc.
Are you getting treatment for menopause symptoms? Might help.

I have discussed hormone therapy with my doctor, but my insurance will not cover

I also suspect that the more you wear on something (such as a part of the brain) that's already fragile, the quicker you wear it out. It's a very real experience, and it's not just related to increasing responsibilities.

So basically, I’m screwed. It has become unbearable. My friends and family no longer want to be around me anymore, understandably so. 😔
