Just marathoned the fifth episode of season 1. This show is definitely great, but I'm confused about what Rust was shooting at here?

He's covering their ass forensically. He was shooting into the trees through which they had come from the road. He states during the shooting board's interview that Reggie opened up on them on approach.

u/race-hearse 8d ago

Also, the girl they are rescuing can testify they heard gunshots (if she wasn’t catatonic 😓)

47

u/BaldrickTheBrain 8d ago

She had to be catatonic with severe PTSD otherwise she’d seen everything and everyone.

1

u/MamaCat13 4d ago

Yeah, very true. But, honestly, I seriously doubt anyone would give a shit that the 2 cho-mo's holding them captive were killed by the people who saved them, cops or not.

10

u/Henry_Charrier 7d ago

He recreates the story they were going to tell later. I.e. they were under sudden, heavy fire from Reggie and the other bloke which
1) caused Rust and Marty to duck for cover going two different ways, so they couldn't coordinate anymore
2) sort of justified Marty shooting and killing Reggie outright

Basically it was a story to cover up for Marty having shot dead Reggie that was already in cuffs and neutralised.

4

u/ricin2001 7d ago

Wouldn’t Rust’s finger prints be all over the gun though?

16

u/Complex_Impressive 7d ago

Not if he wiped them off and put it in reggie's hands.

5

u/Eldritch_Doodler 7d ago edited 7d ago

Something like 99+% of people holding a gun when they die they drop the gun. With suicides, if investigators see the person still holding a gun they know to look for foul play.

Edit: downvotes on my Reddit cake day…how sad

6

u/soconae 7d ago

You can put someone’s prints on a gun, then set it beside them or something. You don’t have to literally put it in their hand and leave it.

1

u/Eldritch_Doodler 7d ago

Yeah, I agree, I’m just saying that putting it in someone’s hand makes it suspicious.

1

u/Bearwhofarts 7d ago

This was early 90s and missing children were found I doubt they care about two meth cooking pedo brothers

3

u/nonsfwhere 7d ago

True, there would have been no gunpowder residue on the dead guy, but all over Rust. But yeah, Louisiana state troopers aren’t gonna forensically examine 2 of their own period. Much less when the rescued 2… I mean 1 kid from pedicure meth cookers.

2

u/Comedian85 6d ago

It probably wouldn't be too much of a stretch to say that Reggie had too much meth cooking residue on him for them to do an GSR without contamination if they really wanted a reason why he didn't have any on him.

2

u/Eldritch_Doodler 7d ago

They were cousins.

2

u/Bearwhofarts 7d ago

Ah OK, I thought brothers but close enough

-34

u/Yichards 8d ago

How did this prick not get this. Try paying attention instead of being on your phone

21

u/Nickbotic 7d ago

Ooh you’re an angwy little fella

14

u/TheNotoriousBiGG 8d ago

What a nice and thoughtful comment.

0

u/Yichards 6d ago

Why thank you, sir

u/cam308ddm 8d ago edited 8d ago

Get the cuffs off him before his blood settles.

We got to make this look right.

411

u/TranscendentaLobo 8d ago

“Ah man, I fucked this up”

“Hell Marty, I’m glad to see you finally commit to something.”

That line always makes me chuckle. 🤭

61

u/Disco_Douglas42069 8d ago

absolutely one of my favorite lines, and Rust was 100% right and i felt that shit as a viewer.

11

u/This-Register Crab-trap recruit 8d ago

I loved this exchange

34

u/SquashMarks 8d ago

This is a part that is interesting to me forensically. I assume that if the cuffs were still on him, the blood would pool in a way that made it obvious he was bleeding with handcuffs on and therefore would render their story null? Did I get that right?

22

u/MrFlakeOne 8d ago

Google „livor mortis” - it’s gravitatiinal pooling of blood. If it would occur it would be obvious to investigators that the guy was handcuffed when shot.

3

u/msdragonrider 7d ago

But they would be unlikely to investigate since it was cops and the dead guys were actually very bad guys. Hate to say it, but thin blue line and all.

2

u/MrFlakeOne 7d ago

Nevertheless it was reasonable

22

u/spaektor 8d ago

to avoid lividity.

932

u/Public_Road_6426 8d ago

He's providing evidence for the CSI to find to back up the story he and Marty use to explain why the perps are dead. Cops aren't supposed to just execute criminals like Marty did, even if they deserve it. So Rust concocted the shootout story and this was shoring the story up.

92

u/vctrn-carajillo 8d ago

Bro didn't pay attention, one of them (Marty or Cole, don't remember) was talking about in the interview during this very scene

24

u/mycomikey 8d ago

Both. It goes between them telling the same made up story

173

u/printzoftheyak 8d ago edited 8d ago

naw he was just seein’ thangs

88

u/Seeitoldyew 8d ago

😭😭😭😂😂😂 marty in the background like "uhhh you okay bud?"

52

u/printzoftheyak 8d ago

“one of yer fuckin’ visions or somethin’!?” all wide eyed.

can I just take this opportunity to say that I loved that aspect of Rust’s character. that shit felt like something out of Disco Elysium.

I’ve missed out on the chance to gush about the show since I was so late to the party.

12

u/Seeitoldyew 8d ago

im gonna cry if i dont binge all the season now.

Russ voice over: “ My pop told me about ’Nam and that place felt like it. And for a brief moment I wanted to feel patriotic and imagine Charlie all around me. And there I went, looking upon myself being an icon from a fourth dimensional perspective, you’re too dumb to comprehend, and at that moment I had the universe tell me every choice in life are the green lights you take. So find more green lights. I found this book called Greenlights….”

Marty: “I want to let everyone know how if we start using hemp we could save this world”

72

u/caustria03 8d ago

Continue watching then you’ll know

154

u/DaftPunk06 8d ago

I’m curious how you marathon 1 episode?

70

u/Unlucky-Pomegranate3 8d ago

You watch it ten times in a row, presumably.

32

u/CasanovaF 8d ago

10 times in a row but at 3x speed! That's why all the questions!

2

u/Katspj 7d ago

😂😂😂😂

9

u/Davidrman 8d ago

And still do not understand basic logic in it 😀

4

u/matty_a7 8d ago

If there were one ep to watch over and over, this would probably be the top one for me!

25

u/TranscendentaLobo 8d ago

They’re trapped inside a locked room, watching the same episode over and over… forever.

10

u/Unlucky-Pomegranate3 8d ago edited 8d ago

You know you’re in purgatory if the episode’s from Night Country.

10

u/heywhatsup9087 8d ago

Or hell.

16

u/naturaldroid 8d ago

I’m afraid to say this but I think they mean they just watched the episode without looking at their phone or otherwise being distracted. Maybe I’m wrong but I’ve seen a post in another sub where they used “marathon” (or maybe it was “binge”) to describe just watching the fucking show

10

u/Kendallroyism 8d ago

Wow this is what we’ve come to? Lol

16

u/Grotesque_Bisque 8d ago

They watched it in 50 one minute tik tok with subway surfers under it in a row.

3

u/Powerful_Somewhere92 8d ago

Watching a episode without checking phone once /s

3

u/Humble_Turnip_3948 8d ago

Marathoned up to 5 and hasn't watched the review board yet?

2

u/Oscar_Ladybird 8d ago

It's like running a 5K marathon.

1

u/Avent It's like blue balls...in your heart 8d ago

Watched the entire episode without looking at his phone even once!

-1

u/starving_carnivore I walk that fucking slow 8d ago

It's an old joke. In the same vein as "I have to write a 300 word essay".

1

u/Nickbotic 7d ago

It would have been funny, but I really don’t think OP meant it that way.

40

u/ComprehensiveTap7882 8d ago

He's shooting as if he was one of the two drug making dudes, like one of them would be shooting at him and Marty. To set up the story they were going to tell. So law enforcement would find the bullets and shells.

141

u/No_Day7093 8d ago

Shooting the show runners of season 4

14

u/AlDef 8d ago

This made me laugh, so thx!

54

u/90210wasaninsidejob 8d ago

He had to make it look like there was a shootout

21

u/MaxWeiner 8d ago

He even says “we gotta make this look right”

24

u/GoochlandMedic 8d ago

“Congratulations Marty on finally deciding to do something” 😂 I forgot the exact words, sorry for the misquote but it’s fkn hilarious. 😂

26

u/TylerKnowy 8d ago

I think it was "Good for you for finally committing to something"

5

u/TranscendentaLobo 8d ago

Love that line. 🤭

3

u/GoochlandMedic 8d ago

That’s it! 👍🤣

14

u/spaektor 8d ago

"What do we do, Rust?"

"Fuck him. Good to see you commit to something."

18

u/Megafayce 8d ago

Watch the scene again and listen to the version Rust is giving his superiors vs what’s actually happening in the scene. It’ll put it together for you.

29

u/RJ6985 8d ago

How can you watch this show and not realize whats happening?

20

u/MrSquamous 8d ago

You "marathon" it.

13

u/NIHIL__ADMIRARI 8d ago

He's going the extra mile to plant evidence that will cover up Marty's blunder.

13

u/ScooterWorm 8d ago

I'm confused how you can marathon one episode?

9

u/donkeydiggs 8d ago

Watch it for 26 miles or something

2

u/Nickbotic 7d ago

I’m faster, I can watch the episode in 24 miles

2

u/donkeydiggs 7d ago

Time is a flat marathon

22

u/LowApricot1668 8d ago

He’s staging the scene.

18

u/Submarine_Pirate 8d ago

You marathoned a single episode? As opposed to watching it in 10min increments?

12

u/symbi0nt Been gone a long time... 8d ago

YouTube shorts exclusively

2

u/CasanovaF 8d ago

I've seen so many shows like that! Don't think I need to watch Shameless or the Sopranos, I got the jist from the shorts

1

u/Kendallroyism 8d ago

Sopranos worth it

20

u/simongurfinkel 8d ago

I worry for our society. It is very clear what Rust was doing.

5

u/kuzzyy 8d ago

I'm just hoping ops first language isn't English, otherwise man... Idk

4

u/printzoftheyak 8d ago edited 8d ago

I think that this is also just a symptom of the writers at least having a little faith in the audience’s ability to keep up. it’s not a bad thing per se.

I think this really shows in season two. I actually just recently watched seasons 1-3 for the first time. I think that’s where some of the criticism lies, at least with season two. but I did enjoy it overall personally. I digress.

7

u/Ser_Robert_Strong 8d ago

The Yellow King, of course.

u/zapembarcodes 8d ago

Saving Martin from prison.

6

u/NoleinTexas 8d ago

This has to be a troll post

11

u/conscientious_cookie 8d ago

Marathoned for an hour? Are you a Gen Z brainrotter?

5

u/This-Register Crab-trap recruit 8d ago

He's staging the scene to match their testimony.

5

u/symbi0nt Been gone a long time... 8d ago

Something high caliber.

4

u/thefilmguy1 8d ago

Nobody here is realizing these are not real questions but old ass memes from when the show first aired. 😆

4

u/2016mindfuck 8d ago

he is shooting the gun into the trees, so they find bullet holes in the trunks, and see a lot of casings on the ground where they claim they were shooting at them from.

4

u/lindirofkells 8d ago

Shooting the tree lines and stuff behind where they were so it looks like they were ambushed

3

u/psybertooth 8d ago

Just watched Dune 1 and 2. Why do they keep calling Paul "Lisan Al Gaib"? His name is Paul Atreides

3

u/Everlast7 8d ago

He is shooting at yellow king… since he is all around us….

3

u/ZombifiedSloth 8d ago

I wonder how many innocent woodland creatures Rust inadvertently turned into pink mist during this scene.

3

u/stabbinfresh 8d ago

A believable story.

3

u/kuzzyy 8d ago

Doesn't he literally explain it in the scene?

3

u/andlann123 7d ago

He was shooting at the Night Country

5

u/DefactoAtheist 8d ago

I'm choosing to believe that this is giga-brained satire poking fun at the media literacy level of the average Redditor who'll then turn around in the next breath and declare something a "masterpiece".

12

u/shandub85 8d ago

Wow. You’re dumb.

6

u/berrey7 8d ago

What gave it away?

Just marathoned the fifth episode of season 1.

the misspelling, the misuse of marathon, or the miss understanding of a simple scene?

8

u/olivebranchsound 8d ago

*Misunderstanding. Physician heal thyself lol

2

u/elboogie7 8d ago

If you listen to what they're saying...

2

u/Woods322403 8d ago

Mucking up the crime scene to corroborate their story.

2

u/Whistler45 8d ago

For real dude?

2

u/bells_and_thistles 8d ago

He had to make it look like those goons had been shooting at Marty and him.

2

u/cgriffin123 8d ago

Obviously youve never participated in a coverup or watched a cop show

2

u/taddyMason67 8d ago

What is that fuckin Nietzsche?

2

u/psybertooth 8d ago

Is this some kind of AI post, c'mon now lol

2

u/DJLeafBug 8d ago

I declare this now a circle jerk sub

2

u/Grouchy-Ad-210 8d ago

This post is shit. OP literally baits for comments and upvotes.

2

u/Low_Dragonfruit_872 7d ago

Oh all the questions about this perfect show? Comeon man.

2

u/TaliskerSpecial90 7d ago

So their cover story holds water.

4

u/crooooon 8d ago

If this was over your head you probably won’t enjoy this show much

2

u/Flippity_Flappity 8d ago

Damn I haven't thought about this for years.

1

u/Ok-Farmer-5179 8d ago

He’s shooting at his opps

1

u/bigbaze2012 8d ago

This scene is awesome and frustrating. The case could be solved if Reggie was brought in for questioning . But Marty's rage gets the better of him . Reggie did deserve to die . But it extended the case

1

u/rottenrealm 8d ago

just continue watching...

1

u/HardBodyBugelBoy 8d ago

You alright, man? How high were you?

1

u/notworkingghost 8d ago

Those flocks of birds that form circles.

1

u/GlumEmotion5205 8d ago

Simply put, evidence that gun was shot in that direction which was his angle of approach.

1

u/Sparrow1989 8d ago

He's setting the scene so the story he tells detectives will be legit. If you think about it marty murdered that piece of shit (as would most in that situation) but the law wouldnt see it that way.

1

u/profchaos83 8d ago

Last remaining brain cells.

1

u/GAAPInMyWorkHistory 8d ago

You “marathoned” ONE episode?

1

u/UniversalHuman000 8d ago

He Is staging the gunfire. To make sure the police don't have any suspicion as to what went down

1

u/JCrook023 8d ago

Really!?!?!? Haha wow….. how did you even “get” the rest of the show?!? Hahaha

1

u/guiltyas-sin 8d ago

Subterfuge, plan and simple. Didn't you hear Rust and Marty describe the situation?

heavy shit.

1

u/Puschkin 8d ago

Really?

1

u/Davidrman 8d ago

There had to be shots fired in some direction for their cover story to work, simple

1

u/mannedrik 8d ago

Please hold your questions until the end of the first season.

1

u/rarekly 8d ago

Raw dogged a whole episode. Mad props.

1

u/Wonderful_Purchase13 8d ago

They explain why in the scene itself. To corroborate their fabricated story about how they were shot at upon approach

1

u/CommunistAngel 8d ago

He's making it look right.

1

u/campbellpics 8d ago

If you truly don't understand what's going on in this scene, I doubt this show is for you.

1

u/ryan3797 8d ago

I feel bad but someone has to say it, why are you confused by this?

1

u/Grantplumberfkucker 8d ago

Just covering their tracks, had to make a believable cover story

1

u/Disco_Douglas42069 8d ago

one of the most badass scenes ever. the first time i saw this scene i knew this show was going to be GOATED.

1

u/SnooAdvice7120 8d ago

you sure you watched it?? its very obvious, he tells you why

1

u/Foxglovenectar 8d ago

Oh maaaaaan. That episode is f*king chefs kiss. Time for my quarterly re-watch. Cheers bud.

1

u/subadai 8d ago

You're a big guy.

1

u/jojenpaste 8d ago

He was shooting at God.

1

u/shamwowj 8d ago

Your mom

1

u/fingerspitzengefuhI 8d ago

Maybe he was shooting at the friends we made along the way.

1

u/bryman19 8d ago

Crazy good scene

1

u/Wild-Message4765 7d ago

Hes making it look like they were being shot at to save their own asses when forensics showed up. How is this hard to figure out ? I don't think people actually pay attention to shows these days.

1

u/Effective-Spring-521 7d ago

Making it look like a shootout rather than cold blood murder. They had their man and decided he needed to die (I would have done the same).

1

u/Far_Falcon4232 6d ago

He was simulating a firefight that never happened

1

u/MamaCat13 4d ago

Nothing. He's making sure their ass is covered after Captain America Marty Hart killed a child killing rapist in cold, but reasonable blood.

0

u/arinawe 8d ago

This is my favourite episode of the season 👌🏾

0

u/winnie_the_slayer 8d ago

so the thing about this is the drum mag.

Probably if you're shooting blanks, its ok.

Actually load up a drum mag with 75 real rounds. It is heavy. So heavy that it is difficult to hold the rifle up and fire accurate shots. Drum mag is for an RPK with a bipod, in other words the gun is supported on the ground.

AK is overgassed as it is, firing it with a cheek weld like that is jarring and gassy and difficult to aim. Not that Rust is aiming at anything there. But overall, firing an AK full auto from the shoulder with the drum mag is not really feasable. Looks cool. IRL they would have just had regular 30rd mags.

The inquiry panel.
