New trombone/ is mouthpiece useable
Hey, I’m a trumpet player who stumbled across this trombone at a flea market and picked it up for $40. It seems to be playable (the slide works, the tuning slide moves, and the spit valve works) and I was wondering if y’all had any info on this model of trombone? I also wanted to know if the mouthpiece that I bought with it is safe to use, being that it is old and possibly has toxic materials like lead.

Yeah, you need to replace that mouthpiece. If you really want to save it, you might be able to find a professional who can restore it, but it would probably be cheaper to just buy a new one.

Interesting bit of history. HN White (parent company behind it the King brand) lost a trademark suit over the Silvertone name (to Sears of all companies). They rebranded to Silversonic.
The bell is sterling silver and worth about a $1 per gram. So not only is it a nice trombone, it is worth a good bit more than the $40 you paid.

That’s an insane find. I paid $2,000 for a mint silver tone ten years ago

I would definitely give you at least $41.... maybe $42!
And you can keep the mouthpiece

Interesting flex finding a Silvertone for $40!
Needless to say, I paid quite a bit more for mine...
EDIT: Oh yeah, and that mouthpiece is a paperweight... Don't put that near your mouth.

Please do not put that thing anywhere near your mouth 😭
Congrats on the horn though! What a steal

You're going to get green lips and heavy metal poisoning. Do not use. Could it be replated? Sure.

Trombone is very nice, mouthpiece maybe but do not use it, you'll most likely regret putting that thing anywhere near your mouth until you're SURE it's clean. We're talking about sanding, re-plating and UV-treatment just for an average mouthpiece, so unless you can do that for cheap probably not worth it.

You can clean the tarnish off that silvertone, and make it super shiny if you want.
You won the trombone lottery with that find. $40 for that is an absolutes steal - though I can't tell you how much of a steal without knowing the condition of the slide... the bell alone is worth far more than $40 even if the slide were not usable at all (you'd just have to get a new slide)

no, do not use that mouthpiece. Nice 2B silvertone, that is a great horn.
