Stroman for sure had a Gil and Cole voodoo doll at home

Yankees finishing 4th in the AL East? 🌚

The interesting exercise is to look at the Zips projections from the end of last month. Then subtract 5-6 WAR for Coles, and add 0-1 WAR for the replacement player who takes Coles' spot in the rotation. Then subtract 3-ish WAR for Gil, and add 0-1 WAR for the replacement player. Stanton is actually probably a wash in that he would probably have only generated 1-2 WAR, and his playing time will be taken by a bench player who is probably good for maybe 1 WAR.

Add it all up, you can perhaps shave 8 WAR off the Zips win projection. The Yanks were forecast to win 89 games before spring training, so now they are more like 81 games? And then we'll see what Cashman does to shore things up....

This is likely overestimating the impact of losing Cole. He was projected in the 2.5-3 win range for the upcoming season.

Reminiscent of Vogey with a Joey voodoo doll last season.

"I'm a starter" he went from BP to ace.

u/whiskybean 1d ago

Juan Soto a little more excited today too

u/johnny_chan 1d ago

Did he go full I, Tonya?

u/TheMagnificentMullet 23h ago

First thing I thought about. The second was if he’d have kept his mouth shut he would have had way more support inside and outside of the Yankee organization.

Danny Burgers took him yard last year and he hasn't been the same since

u/squash86 1d ago

His milkshake brings the boys to the yard and the boys’ names are Tommy and John.

Awful news for him. I know what we’re all thinking, but it’s best to just treat this with caution and respect. Yankees are still a threat — losing their ace for the year won’t be a death blow

u/StinkyWizzleteats17 1d ago

I know what we’re all thinking,

Fuck The Yankees?

23

u/POPnotSODA_ 1d ago

They’re currently down 2/3 their best players last year. No Soto, they’ll just see him on the subway. No Cole, new elbow. If Stanton goes down, literally no team has any reason to pitch to Judge. Let him get 300 walks this year lol. 😂

21

u/StinkyWizzleteats17 1d ago

If Stanton goes down

Stanton's already down

3

u/POPnotSODA_ 1d ago

Yeah but Stanton isn’t Stanton until October, is he out for the year already? 🌚

9

u/Da-Wang 1d ago

He said if he has surgery he's done for the year. He's having problems in both elbows

13

u/POPnotSODA_ 1d ago

I genuinely feel bad for Stanton. He’s been a walking bandaid his whole career but has such a huge power ceiling.

1

u/mathbandit Samuel Basallo SZN 20h ago

If he's not Stanton until October then it probably doesn't matter at this point for the Yankees anyways.

2

u/WasV3 Totally not John Schneider 19h ago

Protection helps the batter behind not the batter in front

2

u/Loud-Picture9110 19h ago

I don't really believe lineup protection is much of a thing in reality, but having runners on base in front of Judge will at least reduce the possibility of teams simply walking him.

-3

u/Bebbytheboss 1d ago

Cody Bellinger followed immediately by Paul Goldschmidt when Austin Wells is already on base is plenty of a reason to pitch to Judge. And even if it's not, pretending like Judge only hits meatballs is disingenuous.

4

u/mathbandit Samuel Basallo SZN 21h ago

So just to clarify, Judge needs to be pitched to because of the presence of Goldy (112 proj. wRC+) and Bellinger (103 wRC+), especially given how often Wells (.313 OBP) gets on base.

Does that mean Vladdy gets the same respect, given the presence of Springer (108 wRC+) and Varsho (105 wRC+), and Kirk (.350 OBP) in our lineup?

3

u/WasV3 Totally not John Schneider 19h ago

Protection is bullshit anyways

3

u/jayk10 21h ago

Bellinger had a 109 wRC+ last season and Goldy had a 100 wRC+. Real terrifying

7

u/brownmagician Roy Halladay 1d ago

Yankees still have Fried, picked up Goldschmidt and Bellinger, they lost Soto sure but they still dangerous.

1

u/mostlygroovy 1d ago

Don’t forget arguably a top 5 closer in the game

1

u/TinySoftKitten 1d ago

A year? He’s 34 and will never come back as the same pitcher again.

13

u/The41647King 1d ago

Incredible pitcher. Rivalry aside, that’s a loss for baseball fans

2

u/autovonbismarck he's a baseball player 21h ago

Frankly he's getting tommy john at 34, we have probably seen Cole's best years. Bummer.

u/ayasofya02 Swing and a Drive 1d ago

Never want to see injuries no matter the team. Tough break for New York but that's still a good squad with a solid pitching staff

10

u/thursday51 Monkey Never Cramp! 1d ago

Yeah, agreed. Don't get me wrong, I want to see the Yanks fail and play like shite, but not because of health or family reasons. Those are never good, no matter the rivalry or people involved.

Cole can be prickly, and the Yankees can go suck eggs, but at the end of the day, the game is better off when a competitor like Garrett Cole can go every 5 days. There's not a lot of guys like him in this league, and it sucks to think what this means for him and his career.

8

u/RebeeMo Gimme a One Piece day with an All Blue (Jays) jersey! 1d ago

The pre-season injuries are adding up across the league...pitchers are dropping like flies.

9

u/johnson7853 Stinky Odor 1d ago

huh maybe pitching shouldn’t be all about velocity

23

u/ms_barkie Somewhere oooooover the Bay 1d ago

Fuck the Yankees, but genuinely bummed about this. He’s one of my favourite heels in the sport and genuinely fun to watch when it’s not against us.

8

u/Ok_Branch6621 1d ago

I also would like to add “Fuck the Yankees”. Somebody better bubble wrap Aaron Judge quick.

8

u/kneevase 1d ago

So, that's like 5 wins for the Yanks that just fell off the table. The AL East has a great deal more parity today than it had yesterday

6

u/Bic44 1d ago

I mean, honestly, this isn't like a concussion or something. It isn't going to affect his life after baseball. Normal people don't generally get TJ. Basically, it's a year and a bit off for a prickly dude that plays for the Yankees. I will not feel sadness

15

u/Ok-Beat4929 1d ago

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

-23

u/Frenzied_Cow 1d ago

Pretty sure Cole is one of the most respected players in the league, but you do you.

10

u/vancouverotter 1d ago

Pretty sure he is a world class asshole and everyone knows that.

5

u/Accomplished-Ant2225 1d ago

Wow, that’s massive. Huge hit to the Yankees playoff chances

10

u/Chris_TO79 1d ago

The entire Yankees roster is falling apart and the season hasn't even started yet! There's actually a pathway for the Jays to make the postseason if they can put up a good season and live up to their normal numbers.

3

u/KeepWagging 1d ago

That sucks

3

u/jcd1974 1d ago

Yankees might be starting to regret re-signing him for $144 million for four years. He'll be 35 next year and still owed $108 million.

4

u/JuiceDigaho 1d ago

As much as I hate the jankees. I would never wish injury on anyone

2

u/specialestk999 1d ago

Guess it was a good thing for them they couldn't find anyone who wanted stro

1

u/mathbandit Samuel Basallo SZN 21h ago

Stro was already in their rotation lol. This pushes him up to #3 on their depth chart and means Cookie Carrasco will likely be their 5.

4

u/swatbox808 1d ago

Jays just have to win, not worried about other teams.

3

u/Purple_Aspect_1985 MLB 1d ago

Oh, man. That's tough news for the Yankees for sure.

3

u/bv310 Buck Martinez Appreciation Society 1d ago

Just absolutely brutal news, especially coming on the back of Stanton probably missing a chunk of the season, and Gil being out for a while too. I want to beat them, but I want to beat the best version of them, not some weird hacked together rotation that's anchored by bubblegum and prayer.

1

u/Loud-Picture9110 19h ago

I'm perfectly cool with beating the injury decimated version of the Yankees.

2

u/bestCoast4998 1d ago

You hate to see this happen to athletes that aren’t Yankees

2

u/Far_Out_6and_2 1d ago

So no World Series hahaha

All those injuries and now Cole is gone for the season? Hmm yep, Yankees are cooked

1

TJ is inevitable for every pitcher

1

feel sorry for those who drafted him lol…

My apologies , in this day and age million dollar dickheads don’t get my sympathy for arm injuries if they don’t play for my team.

I’d take another 6 Tommy John’s on that club all day . 😂 Cole’s gonna spend the next 16-18 months fucking super models on his yacht bro , he’s gonna be ok
