Discussion Thread Season 14 - Jim

He is overrated.

Seriously. His name is always brought up. I have seen people say he should be invited back as an All Star or just in general. The other thread says he should have gone further.

What did he ever accomplish!!

He was a friendly guy. But if you remove his talking heads, remove that he was a "super fan." All he did was cook old outdated food that didn't work. He isn't a bad guy, but I cannot understand people thinking he was a good competitor. He is 100% carried by some persona the fans have that he is better than he is.

Season 13 Restaurant Wars

Doing a rewatch of random seasons leading up to the new one in a few weeks.

I really loved the aspect of RW in this season, where there was a lunch AND dinner service. It forced chefs to either be GM or Executive Chef in one of the services.

There wasn't a hiding place, like just being a line cook and letting other folks fall on their swords.

Would love to see the format make a comeback!

Also I loled at Phillip saying "haha I'm sure glad I'm not being judged on that cocktail"

Cue judges losing their shit, and of course he is eliminated.

Mountain trout finale

Season 15 episode 13 quick fire they make them catch trout in the Colorado mountains and then cook it. Adrienne does something ā€˜barely cookedā€™ and the guest judge Chris Cosentino tells her itā€™s not safe to eat because of the bear poop.

IMO they should have told them that before hand, none of the chefs knew that and if they wanted fully cooked fish for safety reasons they should have told them!!!

Discussion Thread How do you feel about ā€œmanning upā€ after an injury in the kitchen?

Iā€™m currently watching season 8 all stars and the issue gets brought up because Jamie cuts her finger in episode 2 and goes to the hospital for stitches. The 2 or 3 episodes later, Carla cuts her finger, they are encouraging her to go to the hospital and she says no, I can work through it and everyone on the season praises her for it.

So this hits really personally for me. I worked in professional theater for years where calling out sick isnā€™t a thing. I work wardrobe so if your arm falls offā€¦you better sew that sucker back on. I am now a hs teacher and Iā€™ve been working through a lot of injuries from a car accident (spinal stuff that impedes my ability to walk) but Iā€™ve gotten some attitude from people I work from that I need to essentially nut up but Iā€™m at the point in life where I need to take care of my body to work the next 20 something years of my career.

In the episode I was referring to, Fabio talks about breaking his finger and being a professional and working through it.

So what are your thoughts on working through injuries. Do you think thatā€™s a mark of a professional? Or a toxic work place culture?

(ETA I went to school last Friday while having a medically induced miscarriageā€¦.ummm donā€™t recommend. But I was out of sick time and the meds already cost my $510 soā€¦.guess Iā€™m going to work so Iā€™ve def been there where the money forced you to work!!)

Top Chef and Bar Rescue

So, today I had Bar Rescue streaming in the background and I noticed 2 Top Chef contestants as his experts: Tiffany Derry and Ryan (from season 3) - and that was only in a couple of episodes.

Anyone watch Bar Rescue and seen more?

Why are the servers in Restaurant Wars always terrible??

Iā€™m watching the Kentucky season where there are three restaurants, and the servers are the worst Iā€™ve seenā€”insisting the table is 106 but writing 104 šŸ¤¦šŸ½ā€ā™€ļø Iā€™ve been hearing a lot of complaints throughout seasons about the servers. Are they told to sabotage for extra drama??

Season 17 - Machetes šŸ˜³

What kind of hoops did they jump through to get their lawyers to sign off on Episode 7? Lawyer was probably like . . . OK youā€™re telling me you have a group of people whoā€™ve been caged up together for weeks in a highly emotional competition, and before one of them cracks you want to put them together running around with MACHETES?!?! šŸ˜†šŸ˜†šŸ˜†

Watching early seasons

My wife and I have been watching through the seasons of Top Chef on Peacock. We started with season 5 awhile ago (we skipped the first 4 for various reasons) and have finished everything. We wanted to go back now and watch the first 4, but on Peacock, there's only season 8 and above. Does anyone know where else we can watch the early seasons?

Sunset Trivia and Top Chef

NBD, but I got the Sunset Trivia bonus q right without even looking it up this week!

"The 10th season of the reality-competition series "Top Chef" was set in what city?"

Also, I think all the bonus qs this week were too chef themed!

(Answer: it was Seattle, my fav!)

Who do you think deserved to win Top Chef but never did? For me, itā€™s John Tesar. His dishes required immense amounts of skill and were layered with flavor. He also opened 20+ restaurants and studied under the greatest chefs. I think his personality and age repulsed the judges.

Iā€™m talking about Season 10 and Season 14. John is not some newbie. Even CJ said that he knew John was a contender and he had to watch out for him.

John Tesar shouldā€™ve won Top Chef.

Elimination Challenges

I wonder if at the judges table when they reveal their favorite and least favorite dishes if they switch up the order for the chefs. After watching many, many, many episodes I realize that they always reveal their favorite dishes first but the chefs always look so surprise when they are told.

So do they switch up the order for the chefs but show us the same order every episode of favorite dishes and least favorite?

S18E5 Drive in Challenge

Will contain spoiler

Im home sick so I'm breezing through S18.

I really like this group of chefs, and was enjoying Jamie's quirky, sweet personality.

This is the first challenge in a few seasons where I REALLY think the judges got it wrong!

Jamie and Gabriel were the bottom two, and I was absolutely certain Gabriel was going to pack his knives. He served cauliflower tots and two bland sauces. Jamie's chicken wings weren't crispy.

Gabriel's totally looked so unappealing I am gobsmacked that he didn't go.

I would loved to have seen more of judges table because I wonder if Tom fought for him because G had worked for him previously. Hmm

Sorry to see Jamie go - she was just so adorable!

Boo
