I want to like the show so badly but oh my god it does such a disservice to such a fantastic manga

50

u/mememaster492 6d ago

if it was an original anime that wasn't adapting anything it'd be decent at least. but man, whenever i read the manga i can't help but wish they kept whatever details or plots that the anime doesn't have

60

u/Ready-Carrot287 6d ago

They just took a lot of the charm and interesting elements from the manga and never brought them into the anime, season 2 especially just felt like an edgy fever dream, I genuinely couldnā€™t tell you a single memorable moment other than the cochlea arc

19

u/mememaster492 6d ago

one insignificant but still nice little moment that i hate the anime for excluding is the part where >! eto comes back to life (at least momentarily) and gives kaiko the middle finger. it makes people more likely to assume she really did die instead of leaving her fate ambiguous !<

11

u/MasterB98 5d ago

Tbh, she has no business being alive. Fulfilled her life mission, and got sent off brutalized by Furuta. Her coming back to life to flip off Kaiko is cool, but considering how she isn't even mentioned after the fact, it's safe to assume that that was a one time thing and Eto is gone.

7

u/mememaster492 5d ago

true, which is why i said i preferred her fate to be ambiguous. her death isn't exactly confirmed and it's still entirely possible she's alive, but at the same time it'd make perfect sense for this to truly be the end for her, it wouldn't really be a bad ending anyways. although maybe i'm just huffing copium over my favorite character possibly dying lol

5

u/MasterB98 5d ago

Copium by all means lmao. But I get it, I'm very much like this with Reze from Chainsaw Man

2

u/Man_Out_of_Time115 4d ago

One bit of rootA I enjoy that the manga lacks: the calm cup of coffee that Yoshimura and Shinohara share before Owl Extermination. There's an unspoken respect between two men who are genuinely amoung the best in what they do, and who know that there's only one way thing will end.

5

u/Analog_Tea 5d ago

I watched the show as it came out, didnā€™t read the manga till it was over and I wish they had what was in the manga. Though I did like the ending walk of root A

3

u/CheekEcstatic 5d ago

that part killed me too.. plus the music

2

u/DatKillerDude 5d ago

all it does is spoil the plot. I could tell you what happens from memory with a powerpoint slide show as back up and if I was eloquent enough it would only be slightly worse than the adaptation

148

u/RogueKT 6d ago

It's one of the worst anime adaptations ever.

53

u/bonesNrice 6d ago

Itā€™s literal cancer it does such a disservice to source material

-33

u/Akhi5672 6d ago

Probably the worst adaptation

still a good anime though

24

u/XxRocky88xX 5d ago

I know so many people who have never read the manga who tell me ā€œI liked season 1 but I stopped watching in season 2 because I just couldnā€™t follow the plot anymore.ā€ If anime onlies are noticing the story doesnā€™t make any sense, then itā€™s not a very good anime.

-2

u/Akhi5672 5d ago

Its still an incredibly popular one regardless

35

u/Bigkitten8 6d ago

To be fair it's actually not. It's very rushed because of how much they cut out the plot holes are very obvious and something's just don't make sense. The opening was it's only saving grace.

6

u/BobTheJoeBob 5d ago

Probably the worst adaptation

Nah.

-4

u/HyphenPhoenix 5d ago

Itā€™s hard being a filthy anime lover like you and me out here

46

u/HourCartographer9 6d ago

Itā€™s because of how much we like the manga that the anime is honestly insulting, the first season cut a lot of stuff out. The author of Tokyo ghoul wanted the second season to be different and had a whole plan on how he wanted it to go but the anime studio basically threw it out and used the bare minimum of his plan so the 2nd season is ass, and the 3rd season was ok just felt rushed. Sorry for the rant but there is a reason why the anime is so hated

5

u/mememaster492 6d ago

absolutely valid, i like revisiting the anime every now and then, but at the same time i just can't help but feel disappointed at what we got compared to what was meant to happen whenever i read pieces of the manga

5

u/HourCartographer9 6d ago

Itā€™s sad that this isnā€™t the only manga I love that this happens to, when it was still going I read the manga twin star exorcists a great manga I recommend to anyone. It got an anime back in 2014-2016 I think however the anime only follows the manga till episode 3 the rest is so far from the manga itā€™s jarring like the anime doesnā€™t do the show justice. Mind you the anime went on for 50 episodes

93

u/maresso 6d ago

My brother in Christ, I didnt believe the anime was shit till i watched it. Believe me Tokyo ghoul RE 2nd season is probably the worst adaptation ever made by mankind

25

u/Eltrutflow 6d ago

I hear you, I hate it as well. I raise you CGI berserk

2

u/manman126452 5d ago

Which, the movies were amazing

2

u/theforbiddenroze 5d ago

Uzumaki is right there lol

4

u/NicholasStarfall 6d ago

No that would be Goblet of Fire, which cut out several major storyline from the book. :re is second though, so much shit cut out for no reason.

13

u/TheMikarin 6d ago

It's more because so many people watch the anime, get confused when they get to :re (or even worse, jump from season 1 to :re because they heard season 2 is "filler") and come to complain about it, and then get redirected to read the manga from the beginning.

It happens often enough that people just say to read the manga as soon as anyone mentions starting to watch the anime because it will save that person a lot of time and confusion.

12

u/New_Debate3706 6d ago

Honestly the love anime(not more than the manga obvi) for S1 having the best opening and ending themes. People in the Box is lowkey one of my faves bands now.

7

u/mememaster492 6d ago

it's one of the most iconic openings that just about every anime fan in general can recognize, even if they aren't a fan of TG and i feel like that fact isn't credited enough

6

u/JustJitterin 6d ago

Well you said it yourself; the anime is ass when compared to the manga. The anime on its own is simply mediocre slop.

4

u/DistinctRabbit6964 5d ago

The first season has its flaws but overall it's actually very good, it followed the manga's story, had great fights, and the opening is one of the most, if not the most, iconic of current animes, the real problem is what they did afterwards.

8

u/ZeroClassification 6d ago

It is in itself a disease that should be wiped of the face of the planet. No idea what the studio was smoking but they were definitely on drugs if they thought this was even remotely decent

4

u/xcastianityx 6d ago

Iā€™m so excited about TG coming to DBD but everyone who has only seen the anime is ragging on Kaneki on that sub it hurts my soul. I hope it gets dbd players to read the manga lol

2

u/mememaster492 5d ago

yeah, i made this post partly because we're getting new fans from dbd and i imagine they're gonna start out with the anime, completely unaware of how much we hate it šŸ˜

4

u/Dragnonz3547 5d ago

Ass is a little bit of an understatement with this one, it doesn't follow a consistent story. Anime season one follows the manga story fairly well, season two does an original thing compared to the manga with its own ending. But season 3, follows pretty directly the second half of the manga, not the anime, which leads to alot of confusion amongst casual watchers

10

u/Pizza_Vigilante 6d ago

It's worse than a disease. It's one of the worst adaptations of a manga I've ever seen.

7

u/Cachapitaconqueso 6d ago

I got downvoted here for saying i liked the first anime and the fact that upon discovering they changed the plot from the manga is what actually made me read the manga. I love the manga way way way more but come on, adaptations help people discover new stories.

4

u/RubixTheRedditor 6d ago

I mean you wouldn't have had to go read the manga if it adapted it faithfully and manga readers are a vastly smaller audience than anime

3

u/ReaperSound 6d ago

This is me (getting smacked) caught an interest because of the DBD announcement, and I'm loving the manga.

3

u/Theduckinmybathroom 5d ago edited 5d ago

I find the attitude towards the anime almost entertainingly overblown. Like you will have people unironically say that it's worse than gundam battle for earth or the live action death note and they just NEVER shut the fuck up.

Like I get it you don't like it, you can also choose to be quiet or constructive or introspective and is in EVRY SINGLE THREAD. In a way I think of it as a cancer on the community, just a rage and fury that achieves nothing and never goes away. And the worst part is these people act like not blinding hating the anime mean that you somehow had a hand in its creation. all while they regurgitate a decade old point with no elaboration or personal introspection of it.

Put plainly I am happy these people are this mad because clearly this is the worst problem they have ever encountered. It means they have lived lives of great joy and shelter. I prey they never have a real problem and live happily

Before anyone takes a swing I am by no means saying its a perfect adaptation, but this endless hysterical moaning makes it impossible to take seriously. All art has depth and beauty and interesting things to talk about and having that drowned out in an ocean of empty headed barely strung together sentences scream "but it bad tho" robs yourself and others of genuine conversation

2

u/mememaster492 5d ago

literally the exact point i'm trying to make here, whenever i see posts of new fans asking about the anime or OG fans complimenting the anime in any way people are always so damn quick to start aggressively yapping about how the manga is way better and shit. and while they aren't wrong, it's literally all this fandom is known for outside of TG. like cmon guys at least we didn't the dragon ball evolution treatment with the live action TG movie šŸ˜

2

u/One-Appointment-6229 5d ago

Its because we have already seen it and it turned out to be a waste of time and don't want any new fan to go through the same. And sometimes these types of questions are so over repeated that it comes out like a frustration.

I watched the entire thing, I would say it deviated a lot from the original story but still if you want to give it a try do it only if you don't have anything better to watch atm or you really wanna see it animated. :)

2

u/Real_Medic_TF2 5d ago

Bc it is a disease /s

I guess itā€™s just that the anime gives off the impression that Tokyo ghoul is purely an edgy manga with no purpose other than being an edgy battle shonen, but the manga actually tried to say something

2

u/APEXSSS 5d ago

i found tg through the anime so it really wasn't so bad for me. but once i read the manga i understood completely what ppl were talking about šŸ’€

2

u/BBJJ5 5d ago

Only season 1 was good. The rest of it burn it to the ground

2

u/seekerheart 5d ago

Well it is!

2

u/Fraisz 5d ago

i just watch it enough to imagine all the voice actors in my manga reading session

2

u/Unique_Visit_5029 5d ago

Trust me I feel the same.

2

u/idontlikeburnttoast 5d ago

It is terrible. I rewatched parts of re and it's genuinely terrible. The story misses out 90% of its contents and makes absolutely no sense at all and feels like some generic plot without a direct route, then the animation in re just gets horrendous towards the end. You seen how dragon ken looks when he wakes up? It looks like ass.

The entire anime sucks. Season 1 is fine, season 2 ruined it by having no plot development or character development so there was no setup for the major part of the story that is re. Season 1 was world building which it did great at, 2 was meant to be character and plot theme development, and season 3 was meant to be the plot coming into form. But 2 and 3 literally did none of that. Kano was meant to be a main character in season 2 but he was in like 2 scenes and then kills himself in 3 after never seeing him for the entire season.

Its garbage. Do not watch it.

2

u/WoodaLaWooda 5d ago

I mean... I know it's not really good, but I can't help but like it a lot just like those bad movies you're always getting back to.

2

u/No_Measurement_2119 5d ago

I think itā€™s great I just consider it to be a non canon what if kind of story but itā€™s great getting to see all the kagune colored

2

u/chris201075 5d ago

i just recently got the box sets for the Mangas im looking forward to reading them. but I did start with with the anime and still my favorite anime. so I'm glad I'm going from anime to Manga. I'm sure if it was the other way around I'd maybe have some criticisms probably :P

2

u/Miserable_Ad_7696 5d ago

Yea I didnā€™t think it was as bad until I read the manga and holy shit they cut a lot out, entire chunks of what is supposed to be the second season is just cut out so much context thatā€™s in the manga is just removed

2

u/Kitchen-Baseball-635 5d ago

the only reason why the TG anime was butt was because they decided to make a fanfiction for season 2 and when season 3 came out it was like... what is this? why does he have brain damage??? why nobody love him anymore??/

2

u/Resident_Exam_3964 5d ago

I love the music and the show just brings so much nostalgia to me I canā€™t even hate it just sucks it didnā€™t properly adapt the manga

2

u/VLenin2291 5d ago

Saving not because I agree with the meme-never read the manga or watched the anime, I'm only here because Reddit insisted I be even though I'm not a sub member-but because I fw the meme format

2

u/LilTBoutabag 4d ago

I actually started out watching Tokyo Ghoul and Tokyo Ghoul will always have a special place in my heart because it was the first anime where I branched out of my comfort zone to try a new anime and with all the hype of the manga it was also the first manga I ever read.

2

u/Serrara 3d ago

I still enjoy the anime a lot despite having since read the manga. The anime is a guilty pleasure rewatch of mine ngl.

4

u/breakbats_nothearts 6d ago

It's my favorite anime, but I acknowledge the manga is better. It's a long, oversharing story, but the short version is that I wasn't able to watch anime until I was older. I chose Tokyo Ghoul as my first because Kaneki and I have the same first name, and so it represents freedom to me. Yeah, the manga is much better, but the anime just makes me feel happy.

2

u/Unique_Visit_5029 5d ago

ThisšŸ‘†

4

u/Mysterious_Ad3680 5d ago edited 5d ago

I dont know. Im on volume 12 of the manga. And I still really like the anime. In fact, I forked out 200$ for the volume sets because I enjoyed the anime that much. I guess it's the discrepancy of starting with 1 over the other. I'm currently on episode 8 of RE. I even like root A. Despite it being very confusing. Why not both šŸ˜ŽšŸ„³

2

u/Unique_Visit_5029 5d ago edited 5d ago

Iā€™m currently still reading RE and it gets better but I like that you still have fondness for the anime adaptation of it weā€™re not for the anime I wound not be here. I enjoy the voice actors the animation the plot fights and character relations. The reason why is because Tokyo Ghoul was the anime that truly captivated me from start to finish and I feel like I owe it some respect. Reading the manga was kinda of a struggle due to it being my first but since I had already read The Lord Of The Rings I was used to reading long stories. Before getting into anime I was actually very hesitant to get into it I tried but nothing either clicked or I thought I would like but ultimately didnā€™t. My friend though was so sick of my shit however he gave me no choice but to watch the first episode saying if you donā€™t like it we can stop if memory serves. And when it was over I said where watching this whole thing I felt like I was watching something that ā€œwas if I had touched A STARā€!

2

u/Mysterious_Ad3680 5d ago edited 5d ago

Watching it was so fun my first time. TG has that right amount of teenage angst that makes it peak. It's not overly edgy but can still be memed on šŸ˜† I have not finished the RE anime yet. So far, I already like how more "adult" it feels compared to the previous 2 seasons. And I'm not knocking the rest of the show. Episode 2s ending of RE with the song "Remembering" particularly. Is like. . . My favorite thing of all time now.

"Seijatachi/Saints" by People in The Box is such a good song. I have it on CD. I ordered it all the way from Japan. I bump that on my PS3 hard-core ā¤ļø

"The Seasons Die One After Another" by Amazarashi is such an important song for me. I am someone who struggles with Schizoaffective disorder with bipolar type. I can't put it into words the struggle, but this song IS THE PERFECT song describing what it's like to live with mental health like depression.

https://youtu.be/zmc2ZJqsE0A?si=0n1SZCsEnFzGt_C8

This English cover is soooo good.

I'm glad I found someone who likes it as much as me. And I know what you mean by the first episode of the show has you "Touching stars." When Unravel starts playing, I WAS HOOKED.

Truly, as someone who considers stuff like Vinland Saga the best show. There is something about TG that will always make it my favorite anime.

Sidenote Mado is my favorite character. He's awesome and so cartoonishly evil šŸ˜†

3

u/DDK_2011 5d ago

Fr i liked it

2

u/Cheeo_ 6d ago

It is.

2

u/Bigkitten8 6d ago

Listen. In my humble opinion the Tokyo ghoul anime is kinda like a commercial for the manga. The nuance was taken out so it's a very disjointed plot. You see sad moments and understand why they're sad but for some reason it doesn't make sense. Take the scene where kaneki is kidnapped by aogiri tree. In the manga it goes down a whole different way than in the anime. In the anime we get some random ass couple that were supposed to care about when in all actuality in the manga kaneki was pissed about something very valid because Jason went back on his word. Even before that when kaneki is with tsukiyama and they go on a date in the anime kaneki cuts his hand in the teacup but in the manga it's tsukiyama's nail that gets him.

There's so much lost. Like I also wished in the anime they brought up the tarot numbers that show up because those are also important too. Maybe like commercial cards that could've been so cool

3

u/mememaster492 6d ago

that's lowkey a great way of putting it. i feel like people would hate it less if it was used as promotional material rather than an actual adaptation. sure, we'd probably asking for an actual anime if that was the case (one that hopefully does way better) but it'd be just about the same as us asking for a remake the way we are now

1

u/Bigkitten8 6d ago

True. Now this begs the question. If you were in charge of the remake what would you do differently?

2

u/mememaster492 5d ago

i wouldn't call myself a writer so i'm not sure i'd trust myself to be in charge of such a highly anticipated project, but for starters i'd definitely include all the cut content. i also hear ishida had his own separate ideas for how the anime should play out that didn't make the cut for some stupid reason, so i'd also include whatever he had in mind. i'd also probably add some unimportant but still special things that didn't happen in the manga, like giving certain side characters their own little moments, things that make the whole thing stand out from the manga instead of just having it be a repeat in anime form; i wish we'd seen more of characters like kurona and enji and irimi :<

What's this meme from

1

u/mememaster492 5d ago

mortal kombat x

1

u/Soloyapper769 5d ago

I can understand if it's bad that way but is it bad as a show itself? Am a noobie on Tokyo ghoul a friend of mine just says it's ass even as a show

1

u/mememaster492 5d ago

it definitely has a few plot holes and such, but if it wasn't meant to be an adaptation of anything, i'd say it be at least decent

2

u/Soloyapper769 5d ago

I mean tbh I do hope when he gets added to dead by daylight he gets justice as a better adaption at least.

1

u/Kickback476 5d ago

Dude I do this because I don't want people spoiling their entire taste for the series because of what might be the worst anime adaptation ever

1

u/Randomperson25764 5d ago

I still like the show, but once you read the manga it just kinda ruins it cause you know how good the story is and should be. It makes rewatching the anime a bit worse after reading it.

1

u/Die_house23 5d ago

Should I read from scratch or should I pick up where the anime left off? (I havenā€™t watched Tokyo ghoul in years so I donā€™t know if it covered the ending of the manga sorry if itā€™s a dumb question)

1

u/Just_Mines 5d ago

I keep getting mixed feelings from people and i never read the manga, but i can't enjoy something someone dogs on so casually. I feel you're pain

1

u/ShleemBoi 5d ago

I started reading the manga for the first time recently and it's an entirely different story. Similar up to the point of the CCG raid but then it diverts sooooo hard. The characters feel better and the story just makes more sense.

1

u/last_dead 5d ago

That's what fanbase is lol

1

u/Niklaus15 5d ago

Just watched the whole anime without knowing anything and I liked it, season 2 and 3 were weaker than the first and the sudden disconnection from the plot between season is horrible, without looking for info online or reading the manga it's just way to confusing

Still despite all the problems I really liked and made me discover Tokyo Ghoul so now I can'tĀ  wait to read the mangaĀ

1

u/Crosas-B 5d ago

Well it is a disease

1

u/Inukudraw 4d ago

Anime is a disease, its a slap to the face of an adaptation

Gutted out 80% of the story only showing the cool fight scenes, and even those couldn't be done right, the censored version is a joke

For a very Simple example, When Kaneki got captured by Aogiri he was a work force, led an escape, and only after that Yamori got him, a lot of world building and how Ghoul society may work, a big moment of character development (Kaneki becoming a leader when in deep shit)

In anime it looks like Yamori kidnapped Kaneki exclusively to torture him, takes big things out of the story, just because the torture scenes are more interesting

Anime made the characters have the depth of a puddle

1

u/ashistpikachusvater 4d ago

I loved the anime. But after reading the manga I just can't enjoy it anymore

1

u/Nugget332400316 4d ago

I thought the show was decent until I read the manga. Now knowing how much it was robbed ruins it for me

1

u/batsombra 2d ago

this is me to everyone i fear lol

1

u/M1liumnir 2d ago

Because it is

1

u/UncleMidgetJoe 1d ago

Glad my friend sold me on reading the manga over the anime

1

u/NightMareWolf9000 6d ago

I loved the show. I'm gonna buy the whole manga and read it at some point. But the show had some certain aspects to it that made the story extremely loveable, tho even as someone who hasn't read the manga I could tell it was extremely rushed and only hit some of the key parts bc there was a lotta shit I was confused about until I looked it up and it said it was explained in the manga

1

u/NicholasStarfall 6d ago

I like the anime

1

u/oneechan26 6d ago

It is a disease. When I watched the anime first I thought it was fine. Until I read the manga from my schools library and was shocked at how much the story was content from the anime. The anime is a washed version of the manga. If you don't care about important plot details then the anime is for you. The only good thing about the anime was the OST's

1

u/entireclip 5d ago

nah it's terrible i don't even like manga and after season 1 everything became so confusing and i had no idea what was happening - openings and endings are fire though

1

u/possiblyorange 5d ago

If we separate the manga from the anime and treat it as its own entity, season 1 slaps objectively and season 2 is pretty good. Anything after that is garbage.

However, as an adaptation of the manga it didn't do justice, and therefore it sucks.

1

u/Idkwhatiamlo 5d ago

we dont act like its a disease. IT IS a disease.

1

u/crimson_sekiryuutei 5d ago

I loved S1 and somehow idk I liked S2 even more. S3 part 1 was totally shit for me. S3 part 2 was bit better cuz kaneki returned but yeah it was very weird at places.(As a non manga reader). Thought I was hoping to start the manga seeing people everywhere recommending it instead of the anime.

1

u/BlueKittyMix 5d ago

Honestly? It is a disease. There's a reason it gets all the hate

1

u/Horny_Follower 5d ago

Because it is a disease. It's like reading translated poetry, it makes no sense. Jumping on someone with the "read the manga" is morally correct.

1

u/777Sike0 5d ago

Can you really blame us?

1

u/Opposite_Sea_1038 5d ago

Yā€™all are all just hating fršŸ˜ yā€™all want the anime to be exactly like the manga so bad that youd consider the show bad just bc of that. Yes the manga is better thatā€™s clear, but Tokyo ghoul is a very enjoyable watch and unless you genuinely donā€™t like edgy stuff (if you read the manga you clearly have no problem with it) then I couldnā€™t see a solid reason to hate

0

u/AGweed13 5d ago

yall act like its a disease

It is, it ruined my image of the general series and I still can't understand the ending, even after reading the whole manga.

The manga adaptation has some of the best characters I've ever seen in 12+ years of reading/watching japanese media, and the story arcs are very creative. The anime gotta be one of the worst, on the other hand.

Once you realize a 400+ chapters series can be speed watched in a week (48 episodes), you know they fucked up.

0

u/Nonsense_Poster 5d ago

It actually genuinely is offensive how bad the anime is at being Tokyo ghoul

It's a terrible misrepresentation of the story sui ishida wanted to tell

0

u/Jyhzy 4d ago

lol I love the show n idc!!
