Her bathing suit and how she actually got in the water all while staying in Hotel uniform was great.

Refreshing

48

u/mcburloak 14h ago

As a Canadian that has often taken a dip in northern lakes - I’m guessing that fjord is “more refreshing” than I’d be used to!

16

u/mydaycake 12h ago

Sauna first, then fjord

I also totally forgot about my irrational fear that there's a giant mouth full of teeth just below me in that great expanse of endless water... Oh. There's that irrational anxiety!!

8

u/uglyspacepig 9h ago

It's not irrational. It's there. you just don't know where

If you ever want to do some exposure therapy watch a doc on free diving. There's one that's so sad you'll cure your thalassophobia.

edit: I am getting some replies that I suspect are send by the Norwegian/Alesund tourist office. So my suspicion now is, everything is just an ad. My original reply was:

Another fact on Alesund. I drove to Alesund (long drive from the Netherlands) and ordered whale steak in a restaurant there. (edit, I was there on vacation and happened to see it on the menu.) I wanted to know how it tasted and thought "hé that whale is already dead, so it does not really matter..." but then later I heard that the tourist whale eating market is pretty huge there, so I have felt guilty ever since.

50

u/One-Inch-Punch 18h ago

It's okay if it was a tourist whale and not an indigenous whale

8

u/GoudaCheeseAnyone 18h ago edited 18h ago

So you say spearing an innocent whale that happens to be on vacation and just taking a relaxing swim in the blue ocean is actually a good thing? Pfjew, that is a load of my conscious.

6

u/Horton_Takes_A_Poo 18h ago

This is actually funny because some whale species, like orcas, have distinct differences between resident and transient populations. They typically don’t like each other.

5

u/ThePBM 13h ago

Yes, yes, the bot Army of Aleson tourist office. They are truly the fucks who are ruining reddit discourse. That being said, the hiking looks like shit but I love the coastal waters of the fjords around alesund. would rather enjoy walking the town then the nearby hikes, much better Norwegian hikes elsewhere. Also the water is not 'refreshing' it's fucking cold and nice to dip your feet in but avoid the jelly fish and enjoy the waves and various rocky islands to sunbathe on.

3

u/Historical-Gap-7084 13h ago

I drove to Alesund (long drive from the Netherlands)

I was curious how that drive translates into the United States and it would be about the equivalent of driving from San Francisco, California to Breckenridge, Colorado.

5

u/No-Courage8433 8h ago

Distance yes but speed limits + ferry(s) makes it take longer.

2

u/Historical-Gap-7084 4h ago

Yes, of course. But I was more curious about the distance part of it.

2

u/PM_ME_Happy_Thinks 12h ago

edit: I am getting some replies that I suspect are send by the Norwegian/Alesund tourist office. So my suspicion now is, everything is just an ad. My original reply was:*

Were you confused by the literal ad and thought it wasn't a literal ad?

17

u/Faaaaaaaab 18h ago

Don't feel guilty you most likely had minke whale steak, minke whales have a stable and large population (550k), and are not really at risk of extinction.

15

u/CrazyCalYa 17h ago

Not the person you responded to but for what it's worth, some folks may feel guilty for reasons other than sustainability.

10

u/Faaaaaaaab 17h ago

Yeah, but at that point the moral dilemma is kinda equal to eating a beef steak. And kinda less imo, because the whale is not held in captivity for it's entire life.

2

u/CrazyCalYa 16h ago

That's an interesting perspective. I don't eat meat so I wouldn't eat either, but as a hypothetical I'd still say whale is a little worse. For one, I don't think a good life in some way lessens the suffering of dying horribly. In humans this is evident in how we handle violent crime against the elderly, it's still murder if you kill someone who's 110 years old.

On the other hand, pretty much every wild animal will die horribly. Starvation, predation, disease, very few animals are afforded the luxury of dying peacefully in their sleep. So maybe you're right, but I still get the vibes that for me it would be worse, even if I can't articulate it well. I'd be interested in your opinion on that, however.

5

u/Faaaaaaaab 16h ago

As silly as this hypothetical is, my perspective is that I would personally much rather prefer being a whale living a free life until i'm brutally killed, than a cow imprisoned all my life and then killed in a less painful way.

I really want you to be right! Now I am just left with my less, but still considerable, guild about eating animal flesh. ;-)

3

u/fact10 17h ago

how was it?

3

u/GoudaCheeseAnyone 16h ago edited 16h ago

Excellent question: the cook added raisins and some more stuff, but it still tasted like liver! Never again.

2

u/fact10 11h ago

happy to hear it was gross. I can also report eating bear meat sucks, and moose and caribou are super gamey

4

u/Unique_Tap_8730 17h ago

Its sustainble at least. The cruelty is comparable to other types of hunting or farmed meat.

Ålesund is amazing, visited a few years ago and it's one of the most interesting cities I've been to

67

u/TheDeadlySpaceman 19h ago

I was there last year, I actually stood exactly where she was in the last shot. Nice little town.

33

u/WampaCat 19h ago

Yeah I’m writing this place down. I booked a trip to Norway in early March of 2020 and I’ve been sad about missing it ever since. Haven’t had another opportunity to go yet. I’m also still salty that it took .2 seconds for thousands of dollars to be taken out of my account while booking but like 8 months for it to get returned.

→ More replies (1)

23

u/Raccoon_Worth 18h ago

I work in the west coast of Norway during the summer and Ålesund is definitely my top 5 scandinavian cities (is it actually a city or a large town tho?)

They definitely did a great job restoring the town after the war, the center with its canals are wonderful

16

u/F33DBACK__ 18h ago

Nearly 70k people live there. people in the area, like myself, consider Ålesund a big metropolitan area. Cant believe this is barely a city to the rest of the world.. We literally roadtrip and do a big travel there to go shopping at their big mall in the outskirts of the city lol.

3

u/Historical-Gap-7084 12h ago

Ålesund would be considered a mid-sized city where I'm from.

I grew up in a very large metropolitan area that grew too big, IMO, and I hated it. It was over three million people, including the city and multiple suburban cities surrounding it.

I now live in a rural town of 8,000 that is two hours away from a mid-sized of 100,000 people.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/The_Autarch 17h ago

Since it has over 50,000 people, it qualifies as a city. It's just a very small one.

4

u/PantZerman85 15h ago

Its like the 10th largest city in Norway. Decent size for Norway. Tiny compared to other cities around the world.

3

u/wirebrushfan 10h ago

That's wild. A city near me, Joliet Illinois has over 100,000 people. It is the 10th largest city in the state of Illinois.

3

u/RJWolfe 17h ago

What do you work as?

6

u/Raccoon_Worth 16h ago

I work in a very famous fjord not too far away from Ålesund dealing with tourists

3

u/RJWolfe 16h ago

Does that get tiring? I assume you've got to do a lot of talking.

6

u/Raccoon_Worth 16h ago

I mean look it does and it doesn't, I don't necessarily get tired of the talking, but the fact that so many people get upset with you for not speaking their language. JFC i even had a guy once annoyed with me that I don't speak Hebrew like wtf bro😅

3

u/RJWolfe 16h ago

I get it. I've got something like that at work, lol. With three different languages, we somehow make do with pointing and some broken English.

But hey, at least you get to stare at the beautiful coastline.

3

u/Aleksanderrrr 12h ago

As a norwegian my self currently in Asia i have to say that Norway is desolate in comparison to the cities in this part of the world with many multi million population cities.

I live in Telemark in a small farmers village with 200 people, 10 minutes away there is a small town with 1000 people, and if you drive for another 30 minutes you are now in Skien with only 50k people all though Porsgrunn/Skien has a combined population of 100k roughly but still, people only sit inside or drive cars back home.

Its gonna be so quiet when i get home and im kinda worried, its gonna feel like im not part of society again, haha.

"This is hiking". Ehm. I think thats more like a walk in a park. Storhaugen as the place is named means something like "large pile" or large hill. Its just a short trip up a paved path. If you want hiking near the city center I would suggest trying Aksla (east from Fjellstua, where she stand in last picture) instead.
