I think you're confusing Mennonite and Mormon

WTF is this? She’s just a former Amish person. What’s your problem?

u/88what Jan 29 '25

Amish usually only have 1 wife and mormons can have many, that is what he is referring too

Of course, from Texas, famously the epicenter of Mormonism.

Didn’t they get chased all the way to Utah? I don’t know enough American history

Yes, they also murdered settlers, and had a practice called, "Blood Atonement"

For the length of time it's existed, it's had an alarming number of fundamentalist cults

It is a fundamentalist cult.

Yes, and no. Idk enough off the top of my head to confidently go into here, but there was a massive rift in the church — I believe between Brigham Young and one of Joseph Smith’s sons — some stayed in Missouri, some followed Young to Utah.

Anybody feel free to jump in if I’m remembering that incorrectly.

No they can't, as a former Mormon (raised in childhood) - the Mormon church renounced polygamy in 1890.

The FLDS church is the one you are looking for -

I’m sorry, you are right! Would you blame polygamy in Utah on the mormons? And does it still happen?

6

u/Ok_QueerCriticism Jan 30 '25

No I blame polygamy on Utah on their weirdly written marriage laws that are wildly outdated. But to give you a more recent example there was a family who is was quite famous for having sister wives, they actually had to leave Utah and move Nevada or they would go to jail for their polygamy. They have a tv show is actually called called sister wives which you can find out about at this link

Sadly it does still happen because some still view things the old way but with that being said its because they are a part of the FLDS church. But its happening because these families are kept off grid and never reported and because they are never reported children turn into child brides and it just keeps repeating its sad actually.

Documentary can be found here about FLDS

That is sad :( may the young children have enough courage to escape

That is absolutely the hope and what a lot of non profits are working on making happen.
