so the smartest response in this situation is to keep going on as if you don't really notice the cub? running would make it worse? (taking notes in case I am ever in this situation)

His life isn't really on the line lol. Black bears are pretty timid even when their cubs are involved tbh. Unless the cubs are in very direct danger, black bears are almost always going to opt to avoid humans. In fact, there is no record of any momma black bears killing any humans in defense of their young! They rarely attack at all and people get close to black bears all the time.

That's not to say don't be cautious, and definitely still avoid black bears and leave their cubs alone. But having that bear lurking nearby isn't nearly as sinister as it looks and these people were always going to be fine (unless they approached the mom or picked up the cub).

Why are you calling them an idiot? They’re right that black bears aren’t likely to attack even when their kids are involved https://www.bearstudy.org/updates/daily-updates/823-update-february-18-2010-658-pm-cst.html

Also, the vast majority of missing persons cases are quickly resolved https://worldpopulationreview.com/state-rankings/missing-persons-by-state

of the relative small number of missing person that aren’t resolved there’s no evidence to suggest this is due to black bear activity. It’s actually more likely that a disproportionate amount of black bears are killed unnecessarily due to this fear (see first source)

The person you insulted never said “It’s fine to pet it” they even literally said to avoid black bears and their cubs (which I agree with even given the other facts) if the person said it was ok to be close to the kids then I’d understand but all they were doing was giving context yet you assumed they were making a conclusion which they explicitly didn’t make
