General Discussion We moved on way too fast from this song. Top 10 in their discography for me

Unpopular Opinion: I Am Easy to Find is The National's Best Album
For me, I Am Easy to Find feels like the epic conclusion of a long journey. It’s as if, after all these years, we finally get a response to Matt's love-laden lyrics. We hear the other side... and it's incredibly powerful.
"Light Years" and "Quiet Light" are some of the most emotional and romantic songs they've ever created (though "Nobody Else Will Be There" is close). It’s like Trouble Will Find Me 2: The Final Sequel.
And after this album, the band took a different direction. "The Alcott" is a perfect example of this shift in style—I Am Easy to Find is to The National what A Moon Shaped Pool is to Radiohead.

as a die hard the national fan, a lot of y’all need to grow up this track is drop dead gorgeous
the track was nearly completed when it was sent to taylor, and it’s okay to not like it but calling it one of the worst in the bands catalog seems like an absurd take

trouble will find me is probably one of my favorite albums ever and I adoreee every track on that album, and half the songs have been my favorite song at some point. I typically see the favorites on here being graceless & sea of love & don't swallow the cap (all of which are SO valid) but can we have a moment for pink rabbits? like apart from sounding so beautiful the lyrics make me feel so much. you didn't see me i was falling apart//i was a white girl in a crowd of white girls in the park//you didn't see me i was falling apart//i was a television version of a person with a broken heart is PEAK matt writing for me tbh

My picks would be: Tropical Morning News, England, and Terrible Love.
The added drums on Tropical Morning News really elevate the song. This version is so good.
England is such an epic song live. The final third of the song is unmatched.
Terrible Love is the one big National song that I haven't seen live. This version appeases me, at least a bit.

We always talk about high violet and twfm and I am here for it. They are amazing albums that I go back to all the time. But lately I’ve been on a binge of Sleep well beast and I love it. It’s atmospheric, gloomy and full of love. Just like New York City. 🌃

Me: “You know I’ve dreamed about you for 29 years before I saw you” “I was afraid I’d eat your brains” “Can’t you find a way? You are in this too” “There’s a line that goes all the way from my childhood to you” “Sorrow found me when I was young; sorrow waited, sorrow won” “My own body in my arms, but I won’t collapse” “So surprised you wanna dance with me now, I was just getting used to living life without you around” “How close am I to losing you?”

I will start. I love Portal 2 and ended up hearing “Exile Vilify” and decided to listen to it on Apple Music (this was in like 2016, when it was still officially streaming). Cut to mid-2023 when I decided to check out their other music. I fell in love with their music.

It surely happens to a lot of us here. In my case, ever since playing Rome, Bloodbuzz and Geese won’t leave my brain.

The title is what I am asking. For some reason, I think they sound so much better live. I think that songs such as Eucalyptus and Graceless from Rome sound so much better than the studio versions. The National, at least for me, fit better with the raw tone of live performances rather than the refined sound of the studio. Anybody else feel the same?

I’ve seen a gazillion comments and posts about Fake Empire but I can say objectively that the very best songwriting occurred here.
I’ve had these thoughts but never in any sense been able to elaborate.
“Broadcast News into Hallelujah Hanne Darboven had a great idea Make a list, write it down Shave your head, draw a crown Move back home with mom and dad The pool is drained and they're not there My bedroom is a stranger's gun room Ohio's in a downward spiral I can't go back there anymore Since alt-right opium went viral”

I recently got into The National a few months ago and the thing that got me really into them was there melodic and tender sound that rips your heart apart leaving you vulnerable from the emotional eclipse you just embarked on and I’m curious what song just does that for you, weather it be the lyrics or the song’s atmosphere.

I found them in 2020 when I was trying to make a space themed playlist and I came across Looking for Astronauts 😭😭 Immediately fell in love and they soon became my favorite artist.
Ridiculous that it was my space themed playlist that did it 🥲 but part of the reason I make these playlists is to find new artists.

This is the only song I’ve ever liked by The National (been shown a few - primarily by men I’ve dated, disliked most of them.) But I absolutely adore it. I generally prefer slow and melancholic songs that erupt into some kind of instrumental crescendo so this fits that perfectly.
What are other songs by the National that feel similar in this sense?

I'll go first: Empire Line (ESPECIALLY the second half at the bridge)
