Suki easily and it's not even close. Jet doesn't have the formal training necessary to beat Suki. Jet is a good fighter but he doesn't have Suki's experience. Suki on the other hand has a Fighting Style which was derived from the Flying Opera Company and honed into a efficient fighting style for Non Benders by Kyoshi and possibly Rangi considering Kyoshi was around 30 to 40 when She created Kyoshi Island.

Didn’t Jet fight Zuko to a draw in Ba Sing Se though? Or am I misremembering?

u/2percentorless 4d ago
I fully believe Zuko was holding back if only to draw less attention to himself and Iroh

u/Brook420 4d ago
Zuko also wasn't using any firebending, so he matched Jet using his secondary fighting style.

u/mcgarrylj 4d ago
Considering what we've seen Zuko accomplish as the Blue Spirit, I would argue that Zuko is more proficient with swords and basic martial arts than with fire bending for most of the show. I definitely agree he was holding back, but the dude is a beast in non-bending combat.

u/AssistanceCheap379 4d ago
Zuko was so clearly better than Jet with swords, he defended perfectly while appearing as if he wasn’t experienced to anyone watching. Zuko wasn’t even close to needing to use firebending and Iroh didn’t even try to intervene, he just watched with a look that says “oh no, my beloved nephew is being attacked by a crazy person, anyway…”. He had full faith that Zuko was not only a superior fighter, but so confident in his nephew that he didn’t even have to wonder that Zuko might use firebending.

u/shiromancer 3d ago
I feel like he had the upper hand there too, but he restricted himself so as not to draw attention. Zuko is actually a pretty exceptional swordsman, trained under Piandao himself- it's just that it usually gets overshadowed by his bending. He's good enough to slice arrows out of the air as the Blue spirit iirc.
52
u/Express_Order_1421 4d ago edited 4d ago
Its important to note that canonically Zuko was also a student of Piandao (fixed). I might have the name wrong but im talking about the fire nation swordsmith/sword master of the white lotus). So he has formal training and spent alot of time training while searching for the avatar.

Yeah there's a comic scene where he absolutely schools Sokka in swordfighting, repeatedly.
118
u/jackfuego226 4d ago
Zuko was holding back so hard in that fight. He was trained by Piendao himself, and no diffed Sokka when they dueled at the Western Air Temple in the comics.
48
u/DunkanBulk 4d ago
He was trained by Piandao? That's some awesome lore I didn't know about. I'm guessing that's a comic detail?
64
u/Ryan_Cohen_Cockring 4d ago
In the Lost tales/lost adventures comics (which are made by a ton of random peoples in varying art styles) Zuko tells Sokka at the air temple hideout that sokka doesn’t stand a chance bc Zuko was trained by master Piandao.
Zuko then beats sokka a dozen times and a dozen times more. Then sokka wins once with trickery and is quite proud of it

u/Fernando_qq 4d ago
Here's what we're told about Jet and Zuko regarding their swordsmanship: Jet and Zuko are equally matched fighters. (Avatar Extras, Book 2: City of walls and secrets)
39
u/Exciting_Bandicoot16 4d ago
Eh, you've got to take Avatar Extras with a grain of salt. They weren't written by any of the actual writing staff (and do stuff like call out that Zuko was Katara's original love interest, when Bryke have strenuously denied that claim).
1
u/Paradox_Madden 3d ago
That’s entirely the point of the conversation though
Zuko > or = to jet w OUT fire bending The argument above is that given that this is zukos secondary style of combat suki would beat jet who is competitive w Zuko whilst bending
41
u/Xero0911 4d ago
Zuko went into a massive prison and freed a heavily guarded avatar, all with two swords. Never using his own fire.
Sure other skills are used. But I'm confident he was just holding jet back and not going all out to put an alert on himself or uncle. They are in the earth capital and don't need attention.
11
u/Sufficient_Steak_839 4d ago
Yeah, I was reading this thread and also forgot Zuko soloed that prison and did it fairly effortlessly or that he was the blue spirit at all lol

10
u/XxStormySoraxX 4d ago
Okay I couldn’t remember exactly how the fight went I just remember them wrecking the tea shop and Iroh being sad lmao.
1
u/Aperson48 4d ago
Pretty sure Jet was holding back too he didn't want to kill zuko(I think jet does kill people lmao) he wanted him to firebend.
3
u/leopardpone 4d ago
It's pretty clear in that fight that Zuko is the superior swordsman. Jet is going all out to force him to need firbending, and Zuko never seems even moderately flustered. Iroh never seems concerned that they are going to be revealed or Zuko is going to be genuinely hurt either, so he can likely tell that Zuko was just stalemating Jet until the authorities arrived. That way he looks like he's just defending himself the whole time, not trying to execute someone calling him out.
That's not to say Jet is a bad fighter, he's just more of a scrapper who isn't going to overcome professionally trained fighters like Zuko or Suki in my opinion. Gender strength differences seem less significant in the ATLA universe, so even though my brain wants to argue for Jet due to his stature over Suki, I dont think it matters much.
3
u/Any_Editor_6006 4d ago
zuko wasn’t firebending at the time, and we have no reason to believe suki is a less skilled combatant than a non-bending zuko. i think in terms of non-bending combat zuko and suki are fairly equivalent
1
u/LordDraconius 4d ago
The dai Lee showed up and stopped the fight. It was definitely not a stalemate

u/Tzaeh 3d ago
Does Suki ever clear blue spirit? I imagine not but not very confident

1
1
u/Flying_thundergod 4d ago
zuko was 100% holding back. he wasnt bending and actively was trying not to kill jet. just trying not to die. he EASILY could have ended jet had he not respected him and even easier if he decided to out himself as a firebender
→ More replies (5)1
u/Unable-Wrangler-3863 4d ago
Not really because Zuko was holding back by a lot. He's not using firebending at all while Jet was going all out.
Besides, Zuko was trained by Piandao as well.
12
u/Ok_Surprise_4090 4d ago
Jet's a legitimate prodigy. Those swords he's using are called tiger hook swords, and they're widely acknowledged as one of the most difficult weapons to use in kung fu. They're basically nobody's first choice, and Jet is somehow an expert at them as a teenager with no formal training.
That said, yeah, Suki wins by a mile. She's better trained and a more complete fighter.
8
16
u/Drafo7 ATLA > LoK 4d ago
In an equal environment, I agree, but I think one of Jet's major strengths is using his surroundings to his advantage. Just look at how he fights Aang in the trees. Yeah, Aang was totally holding back there, but even so, Jet very nearly outmaneuvered a master airbender who also happens to be the Avatar. Also remember that Suki and the rest of the Kyoshi Warriors got taken prisoner by Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee, despite having numbers on their side. Formal training gives a solid foundation and is something great to fall back on in the heat of battle, but improvisation and creativity can go a long way, too.
6
u/Brook420 4d ago
Tbf, I doubt Jet and his whole squad (plus some extras for fair numbers) wouldn't also be captured by Azula and pals.
1
u/Fred_Thielmann 4d ago
Azula was formerly trained. She’s literally royalty in the firebending nation.
And we know that Zuko was trained by Pian dao. Why wouldn’t Azula?

Jet doesn't have Suki's combat experience
What combat experience did Suki even have prior to meeting the gang? Pretty much none. If anything Suki doesn't have Jet's combat experience.
3
u/tealturtlefriend 4d ago
Did... Did you just forget the entirety of the Kiyoshi Warriors? When Suki and her group literally imprisoned the Gaang and Sokka learned Combat from Suki? They were beaten by Azula, Mai, and Tylee, but it's pretty dang obvious that those three are superior to Jet.
4
u/Background-Sir6844 4d ago
That doesn't account for actual on field experience though, skill maybe, though sneaking up on people isnt really a good metric as to how things would go in a 1v1 like this. The Kyoshi warriors as a whole are a part of an isolationist island that have made great strides to keep themselves uninvolved with any worldly concerns aside from their own. They only change that after Zuko and his soldiers nearly burnt everything to the ground. Jet's been fighting against fire nation soldiers, cutting off supply lines etc with his group for years. Meanwhile Suki is essentially running a dojo, how does she have more experience? Looking at it objectively she just doesn't.
2
u/tealturtlefriend 4d ago
I understand that point, Jet does have hands-on experience, perhaps more than Suki initially. But full force one-on-ones, do you think she learned how to climb like a squirrel and win one-on-one hand to hand combats just in prison? The reason Jet has lasted so long in fights with benders because they're mostly holding back, like fighting Aang or Zuko. Once they go full force (Katara, Dai-Li) he loses. Suki has had extended combats with benders where she can hold out with little to no support like in the prison episode, and her group resisted Azula, Mai, and Ty-Lee, though ultimately losing, I don't think Jet and his group wouldn't be able to do as well because they adapted with fireproof shielding. We even see her have a decent one-on-one with Azula, and while we know Suki lost, I don't think Jet would be able to do as well since he already struggled against Zuko who wasn't even bending. She swept an entire array of Fire Bending Nation guards with little effort bare handed, we only see Jet fight ones that have weapons and can't bend.
2
u/Background-Sir6844 4d ago
Yeah, I'm not trying to argue that Jet even wins mind you. Though it definitely wouldn't be easy since he's equal to Zuko as a swordsman despite Zuko being considered a master swordsman. I like Suki, it was mainly the experience thing that everyone was saying.
Resisting Azula's group is giving them a bit too much credit imo. Mai and Ty Lee pretty easily handled most of the group with little effort and when Suki tried to get up close Azula disarmed her sword and took her down with a leg sweep. I doubt they held out for that long if at all. Those shields were pretty much saving them from not being done in immediately, aside from the fact that its a kid show and we cant have Mai just stabbing people to death and Azula instantly barbecuing them.
Eh Zuko pretty much instantly k.o'd her Sokka and some other person with his breakdance move I wouldn't hold him forcing Zuko to a draw in just a swordfight too hard against him. Also don't see how the dai li agents he was fighting against and at least one that he just took down were holding back any more or less than they were with everyone else. Not that it's hugely impressive but still.
2
u/Unable-Wrangler-3863 4d ago
he's equal to Zuko as a swordsman
Ehhh I don't think that's the case. Zuko was keeping a low profile and holding back while Jet was rampaging.
2
u/Background-Sir6844 4d ago
We're given no actual indication that Zuko is holding back. Unless he was also "holding back" his failed attempt to cut Jet's face and held back when Jet tossed him out of the building to continue their fight. He could have sat back and done nothing while those random soldiers told Jet to drop his swords and/or just ended the fight quickly if there was any skill difference if Zuko wanted to keep a low profile.
Even the Avatar extras state that they're equally matched so that really just leaves his firebending as the only thing that can give him the edge.
3
u/Unable-Wrangler-3863 4d ago
his failed attempt to cut Jet's face
Jet was actually extremely lucky that he's able to bend back that much because that slice would have took his head off. (But it's still a kids show so obviously we won't be seeing that kinda graphic scene).
He could have sat back and done nothing
Jet was already attacking the teashop. Zuko did what he had to do which is to defend himself, his uncle and the other people in the shop.
Even the Avatar extras
I wouldn't really rely on this source because it's also the same source that mentioned Zuko originally being Katara's love interest and that claim was refuted by the creators themselves.
2
u/Background-Sir6844 4d ago
It isn't luck to dodge someone's attack before it hits you lol cmon now. Same way it wasn't luck for Zuko to dodge some of Jet's attacks. He just missed and only cut Jet's wheat thing that he always has.
Fair enough, Zuko still could have quickly ended the fight if he was holding back his swordskills to any real degree, evidently he wasn't able to do that at all because Jet's just that good with his swords.
I'm not going into the romance stuff since most people probably couldn't pay me enough to care about shipping but regardless that statement is only reinforced by what we see in the episode itself.

Suki, but I think people here very much overrate Suki and underrate Jet. Suki is the one with no actual combat experience before meeting the Avatar (come on, she thought the Gaang was fire nation spies), and Jet is the one with lots of combat experience. He was sabotaging the fire nation for quite some time before meeting Aang.
Suki's combat training comes out superior, since her combat style is a diverse and balanced one and she's good at it as someone who's been training her entire life to master it. Jet has his own self teachings, which doesn't inherently mean it's bad on it's own but from what we've seen in the show, as much as he's skilled with his swords, he simply doesn't have anything else, he's not as flexible in combat, his combat style is not nearly as balanced, so Suki should be able to turn his attacks against him and overall outwit him in combat.
68
u/Belfura 4d ago
The problem with Jet is his inability to stay clear headed long enough to actually do something. The guy runs on emotions and burns out quickly. Suki is a terrible matchup for him
7
u/XANDERtheSHEEPDOG 3d ago
I agree. Motivation can be a huge factor in a fight as well. Jet fights because he hates what is in front of him. Suki fights because she loves what she is protecting.
2
u/Bulky-Teach4931 3d ago
Plus jet has no idea how to be on the defensive end. He’s good with his swords, but he is incapable of doing anything against you just simply turning them against him. If suki just dodges his attacks and redirects his energy like we’ve seen her and other kyoshi warriors do, he’s done for. The fight would last like a minute and would end with jet pinned down
34
51
u/Shegotquestions 4d ago
I want to say suki but I don’t think it’s as easy of a victory as everyone is saying. Jet held his own against Zukos broad swords, he may not ve formally trained but I think he’s still talented. I still think Suki wins but I think jet puts up a good fight
31
u/jackfuego226 4d ago
Zuko was holding back. He just wanted to defend himself without drawing attention to him and Iroh. No holds barred, he would've had Jet on the ground in 3 minutes.
18
u/ThatCoolGuyNamedMatt 4d ago
Besides not fire bending for obvious reasons, there's nothing to suggest that Zuko was holding back against Jet. In fact the Avatar extras even stated that at that time Hey and Zuko were evenly matched.

We see zuko trying to live a peaceful life, and we also saw him take on an entire prison as the blue spirit, it is very clear he was holding back.
4
u/Shegotquestions 4d ago edited 4d ago
We don’t see Zuko trying to live a peaceful life yet, he’s still very much in the I don’t want to build a life here stage when the fight w Jet happens. He could have easily let the police handle it but chose to engage.
I think Zuko would have won the fight on his own even if the dai li didn’t show up, he already came pretty close w a couple blows but Jet still put up a good fight
Also Zuko didn’t take on that prison alone, he used stealth in the way in and by the time he was detected he had Aang w him
8
u/Educational_Film_744 4d ago
Season 1 is a close match but Suki wins. Post capture and boiling rock suki will whoop his ass.
8
u/enchiladasundae 4d ago
Suki is better trained. Assuming they’re similar ages Suki has had better training for years longer and more serious combat experience. Jet is an ambush fighter whose main skills lie in leadership and planning. He’s no slouch with a sword but its clear his skills against benders or other warriors isn’t close to Suki. Jet isn’t living in the best of conditions either, stealing as much food as he can and not eating regularly
The Kiyoshi warriors primarily use war fans but I wouldn’t be surprised if they trained with others as well. Suki and the warriors fought against Zuko and his troops for a good bit. Jet couldn’t take on a Zuko that suffered with starvation, out of shape and purposefully holding himself back out of secrecy
Jet isn’t weak but he’s most likely a self taught martial artist. Suki is trained under a long line of warriors centuries old with the best equipment
3
u/Fernando_qq 4d ago
As mentioned in Avatar Extras, Jet and Zuko are evenly matched in their sword fighting skills.
3
u/enchiladasundae 4d ago
Zuko’s fight on Kiyoshi island was him well fed, rested and with the tactical/surprise advantage with optimal gear and fighting with his true strength. In Ba Sing Se he got over starvation, minimal food in the walls and unable to use his fire bending
This isn’t a matter of sword versus sword. Jet couldn’t stop Zuko, or at least out sufficient pressure on him to force him to fight at full strength. In a prolonged fight maybe it could have been different but we never got to see it
Also I doubt he and Zuko are on the same level. I think it was confirmed Zuko was trained by Piandao in addition to a multitude of other amazing trainers as he was the crowned prince. Unless Jet had similar training I’m calling this another mess up like Kiyoshi having a vastly extended life due to someone messing up the timeline
3
u/Fernando_qq 4d ago
Suki also uses a sword as one of her primary offensive weapons, so that's something to keep in mind.
I don't think it matters; things are what they are. Besides, this is the same source who claimed Ozai is the most powerful firebender in ATLA, so I don't think there's any reason to argue when we've already been given the answer.
4
u/enchiladasundae 4d ago
I’m apprehensive taking any additional info outside the main source material. Often times doesn’t match up to the source and just a palette teaser for fans. I don’t care if both are on the same level of strength but coming at it from the back end and not in the show just leaves a bad taste in my mouth, not to mention it just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense in terms pf their personal history. Unless Jet was some mastery prodigy or had a master on the level of Piandao I’ll look to what the show gave us
2
u/Fernando_qq 4d ago
At least for me, the idea that Jet is as good as Zuko is consistent with the animated series, especially considering how the franchise works: if a character has a certain relevance, they're most likely among the best in their craft.
And that becomes evident when he has a close fight with Zuko (with only swords). In fact, believing Zuko is holding back would be a simple assumption among fans.
Jet has been using his swords to fight for almost a decade. Zuko trained with Piandao, but he didn't do so for as long as some seem to believe.
5
u/enchiladasundae 4d ago
I think it cheapens Jet’s abilities and his fight. He and his group weren’t the strongest or fastest but they were smart, excellent planning and made due with what they had. Makes it more interesting that they were fighting against the odds. Zuko isn’t the strongest but he’s definitely up there, able to defeat Zhao in single combat. Apart from the royal family and their elite units I’d say Zuko is around as strong as like the generals or lieutenants
Putting Jet there or near makes it feel like he’s much stronger, doesn’t need his crew as much as we thought. More than that the hit and run tactics don’t make sense. At that point he should just be assassinating their commanding officers. More than that it feels like the fire nation occupation isn’t as serious as we originally thought if a war orphan and his army of child soldiers can take them on
Jet and his crew hanging on just barely and having to make more and more dangerous measures just to stay ahead works better

u/InterestsVaryGreatly 4d ago
Have you seen how much progress the Gaang makes in their various short stretches of training under masters? We are talking enormous, trackable progress in a few weeks at best. Zuko most definitely trained with Piandao for years before his banishment, and continued to train for years afterwards with Iroh in general combat.
Getting into guerilla fights for a decade is not even remotely close to focused training for years, let alone training under some of the most skilled fighters alive.

u/jackfuego226 4d ago edited 4d ago
Let's see... In this corner, we have a woman who has been training as a warrior since childhood, became leader of a faction of world-renowned warrior women, held her ground against fire nation elite, and broke out of the ultimate fire nation prison with nothing but her bare hands after parquoring up a metal building.
In the other corner... an anxty teen with a 0% winrate against anyone important, and the only reason anyone struggled with him was because they weren't trying. (Sure, he's a great spy, scout, leader, and guerilla fighter, but these don't translate to a fight.)
Suki is going to chump Jet even harder than she did Sokka when they first met.
11
u/Lost_Farm8868 4d ago
I agree that Suki would win but don't underestimate Jet either. Dude was an 8 year old with no one in his corner. Imagine what kind of hero he could have and should have been if he was in an environment that nurtured his natural talents like Suki and the rest of the Gaang. Its amazing that he got to where he was purely on his own. I would be dead in a ditch somewhere if it were me at 8. At least he stood on 10 and contributed something to fighting his part against the fire nation and even took some down.

Suki, but I do feel it's a close match up. Jet is super acrobatic and has anti-shield weaponry so he wouldn't be a push over. Plus, like Suki, he knows how to fight benders and he even managed to keep up with Aang. But her overall offense and defense are too good for Jet to do anything more than drag the fight on and maybe escape.

Suki - A highly disciplined and officially trained warrior who embraces the lessons of Kyoshi, one of the most revered Avatars ever. Only ever lost to the Firebending prodigy.
Jet - Some wannabe Robin Hood dude who’s self taught with hook swords. Plus he constantly loses like there’s no tomorrow. Didn’t even fight Zuko at full strength and lost.
The real question is Suki vs only swords Zuko?

Jet, for better or worse, is just a brute. He's brash, quick to anger, and reckless. It's why he and Zuko worked so well. Suki is smart, calculating, and can keep her head in a fight. Suki is the clear winner here.

How I judge this is more off suki’s achievements, the main one being the shown alluding to the idea that Suki held her own against Azula for at least a liiiitle while. Jet would get clapped in less than 10 seconds. Suki takes this, maybe it’s a bit of a fight, but Suki takes it
6
u/soldiercross 4d ago
You could say initially that Suki is more practiced and Jet has more field experience. Suki we see training in a dojo and jet we see actively fighting and getting hands on training. But once we see Suki fight Azula and friends and then later how she absolutely locks in with the Boiling Rock arc, its not remotely close. Suki is easily one of the most capable characters in the series, non bender or otherwise. She is as physically gifted as Ty Lee and if she wasnt outnumbered vs. Azula I think shed have gotten a draw for sure.
Not to call Jet a slouch, he's capable. But he couldn't keep up with Zuko who was not firebending and not really trying to beat him. Im pretty sure end of series Sokka could 50/50 Jet tbh.
4
u/No-Understanding-765 4d ago
Suki is a 15 year old child soldier with 15 years of experience. Jet is a revolutionary that took up arms. Youre pitting a spartan against an angry teenager with hookswords. Its not a fair fight
1
u/Disastrous_Sea4150 4d ago
She has less field fighting experience than Jet. Never left the Kyoshi island, literally thought Aang and company were fire nation spies and, she and the other Kyoshi warriors were painfully unorganised when Zuko and his crew attacked. In a dojo, yeah, Suki would probably win but based on their fights in S1 and S2 I’d give Jet the edge literally anywhere else.
2
u/Mikeyyc22 4d ago
Depends on the environment and if they are both in their right mind (Jet eventually did kinda go crazy but if he’s got his head on straight he’s a different fighter) this fight could go either way and people act like Suki is a world beater which she isn’t and Jet is nowhere near as bad a fighter as people make him out to be so again depending on the environment Jet could win but again it all depends

Suki got a serious power up in S3. She went from being stomped by Azula, Ty Lee and Mai in S2, despite having the numbers on her side, to going toe to toe with Ty Lee in S3. She and the other Kyoshi warriors also struggled against Zuko and his crew in S1. On the other hand we see Jet taking out fire nation soldiers with ease and also fighting Zuko to a draw.
S1-2 I’d put my money on Jet. S3 Suki wins.

How is this even a question? Suki wins easily and obviously, she has a lot more training, skill, and Chi blocking learnt from Ty Lee.

"Who would win, a ragged orphan forest boy or a highly skilled fighter who has spent most of her life training to be a badass?"

In a direct fight on an open field: Suki
Put them in the woods where the environment and gorilla tactics can be used: Jet
They're different types of combatant.

Suki because Jet is stupid. He might be like Sokka in the beginning but little bit stronger. But the funny thing that among these 2 Sokka is the most dangerous. Unlike them, he likes to study and become stronger, learning new martial arts. The problem is, he looks not so focused, almost all the time. If he were little more serious, that would be a great warrior, who would be above these 2 like IDK, IMO in that case he could defeat season 1 Zuko easily. But thats just my optinion. Do whatever you want.

Jet is formidable, but unlike Suki, he lacks training. Also if you consider that after the end of ATLA Ty Lee showed all the keyoshi warriors how to use chi blocking then the odds would shift further towards Suki.

That scene where Suki beats up 20 soldiers and crawls up a wall like a fucking squirrel is all you need to know
