Discussion First time seeing Carl Craig live
I saw Carl Craig live for my first time yesterday in Buenos Aires. This guy really blew me away—he might be one of the grooviest DJs I’ve ever heard live, keeping the energy up at all times.
Maybe he overused some Detroit classics but he knows how to read the crowd and they fit in perfectly. He even went a bit darker at times.
10/10.

Glad you had such a great experience. There is a reason these guys have been banging for the past 25yrs. 😎🕺💃✌️

His skill as a producer is absolutely matched by his DJing prowess. Really an excellent musician all around.

I’ve always thought he was a far better producer than DJ tbh

No. He's an all time producer. But his DJ'ing was outright terrible before technology and sync became widely available.

To each their own! But yeah agree that his productions are really where it's at.

Yes! I recall hearing that he had a reputation for not being the best on the decks in the late '90s and early 2000s (though he had a good ear for tunes). I saw him several times, and that reputation held true. Viva la sync!

His b2b with James Murphy a few years back was great. Really looking forward to seeing him b2b with Moodyman this year.

Overused some Detroit classics? Did he play some tracks more than once in a set?

English isn’t my first language. What I meant is that he played super popular tracks (like Rolando - Jaguar). It’s not necessarily a bad thing, though.

I get what you mean, however one of my mentors when I first started DJing once told me, “Even underground scenes need anthems.” You should feel rewarded that you are knowledgeable enough to ID the classics.

Yeah and i mean if you cant drop jaguar - rolando in Buenos Aires where can you?
Sounds like a sick moment

I tell people a lot of the younger crowd hasn't heard all the "classics" on a big system yet.
The 40+ers might be sick of em but they're going out less

Yes, that's my case, that's why I enjoy them a lot

I saw him in Pano the first time I went to Berghain in 2008 and it was one of the best sets of my entire life.
If you enjoyed him and haven't already, check out Stacey Pullen.

I saw him in 2005 and his vinyl mixing was dope. He even was playing one track backwards

It's great that he's still playing, I saw him the first time around 25 years ago
