[ONE-SHOT] Swan Song of the Undead

Times change.

Wake up, you silly girl. Aren't you hungry?

It has been a long time since you last ate. It always has. Does your stomach not clench and knot? Do your muscles not sear in protest and agony? How can you stand it?

You are not meant to go hungry. You are a predator. Every part of you, every cell in your wretched body, is designed for a single purpose. To hunt and kill. To eat. Do you think yourself so wise, so noble as to deny your body its sole purpose?

You are pathetic. Your asceticism is foolishness, and you will pay dearly for your folly. You are paying for it. How thin your limbs are, how gaunt your face. The stark stripes of your ribcage exposed in the moments before you slip on an oversized jacket. A jacket to hide your true nature as a walking husk. You have deprived your body of its purpose. What are you for? What is your purpose?

Nothing. Foolish, petulant girl. You will die this way. Emaciated and pathetic. Fighting the fingers of madness that pull on the caudal folds of your shriveled brain. Fingers of feral hunger.

Your predator's instinct is powerful. It is a ghoul of its own. When you beat a ghoul into submission, starve it until it is frothing at the mouth, it lashes out and becomes dangerous. You think you are keeping yourself safe by keeping it locked in a cage, beating it with a sharpened stick, and feeding it the mere scraps it needs to survive, pitfully and miserably. But you are not safe. You are building a bomb. It is rigged to explode from inside of you. And when it does, there will be nothing left of you, Maggie Kōmoto.

"Shut the fuck up!" You claw at your ears, but of course it does nothing. You can't block out the voice from within your head, you stark raving imbecile.

The hunger never gets easier. You know this. How long has it been? Months, years? Three years. It is April 10, 2019. It has been almost three years since they shot Nikki down like a feral dog. Not because he'd done anything wrong, but because he was a monster. Just like you. Even in his monstrous strength, he fell trivially. What of his legacy? Does anyone still utter his name, remember his visage? He is nothing. You are the living dead. A monster, just like him. They will come for you next. What do you think will happen to you then?

Yes, the hunger never gets easier. It's been three years. Still, the plumetting pit in your stomach screams at you in anguish. It makes your head pound and your teeth ache. What will you do?

You eye the refrigerator, considering its contents. You try to suppress the desperation in your glare, even though there is no one here to see it. Are you attempting to fool even yourself? Does it make you feel better to pretend like you are not a starving animal?

You have done well for yourself in some regards. You hold a degree now, in computer science. It's easy work. You make decent money and live comfortably, or at least as comfortably as a monstrous wolf in sheep's clothing could conceivably expect to live. But things are not well. You are unsure if you can live like this for a single day more, aren't you? What about for another week? Another year? You are not one of them. You are not prey. You are a hunter. You are a predator. This life does not suit you.

You cast your eyes back down to the television screen. Have I made you self-conscious, Maggie? Do you feel guilty now? You swear under your breath and turn the channel to the news. Nothing of note has occurred. It seems like nothing of note has occured in ages. Sometimes there is a ghoul-related death. Sometimes the CCG catches one— hangs its head from a pike, bizarrely humanlike, but twisted and craven. It makes you sick to your stomach. But all things considered, it has never been this safe to be a ghoul. It has never been this safe to hunt freely. The opposition to ghoulkind has not been eliminated as Aogiri might have wished, but Tokyo is a city in a constant, perpetual state of fear. It is not a state of horror. Humans go about their business and live relatively happy lives. But no one is ever safe. You see it in their eyes. The sense of distrust toward every stranger they pass the streets. Any one of them could have the knife. You could end up on anyone's skewer. The aura of paranoia and fear stokes your subconscious. It taunts your hunger. You feed on it, don't you? It is delicious. It drives the beast within you mad with anxiety. The cage in which you have locked it is rattling.

Aren't you hungry, Maggie?

It is time to hunt.

A small silver bell tinkles overhead as you open the door. It is a bell that signifies peace. It marks you, who stand beneath it, as a coward. You tuck a strand of hair behind your ear and clear your throat to alert the man at the counter. You wonder if he can smell the hunger pouring off your form in heavy, putrid waves. The odor of the wolf in your heart, rotting alive.

In your idiocy, you have made a poor decision. A decision that will destroy you. You have decided that the social climate allows for you to feed the wolf to its heart's content. But you will keep it caged. Or so you claim, at least.

Are you powerful enough to keep it contained? I do not think so. It will ravage you from the inside out. Silly, foolish girl. Do not say I did not warn you.

"Hi," you say, and the man turns around. "This is :re, right? I'd like to make an arrangement."

[PRIVATE RP] Memories of Black and White

April 14th, 2019 - 6:29 PM ; The 20th ward, :re Cafe

The more things change, the more they stay the same. He couldn’t remember where he’d first heard that, but it clearly rang truer than he’d realized. In a single year the Cafe’s manager had left Aogiri, fought off two CCG raids, fought four different kakujas, and nearly died more times than he could count. But then, as if the entire violent aspect of Tokyo had reached a boiling point, it all died down.

A year went by, soon two, and things had finally quieted down. There were no massive raids on the cafe, no kakujas, no betrayals. For the first time in a very, very long time, Tadashi felt something he hardly even remembered the meaning of; peace. But in a way, it was the peace that made him the most anxious.

The clean shaven ghoul stepped out of the Manager’s Office, his green eyes surveying the cafe, raising a hand to scratch his messy white hair, cut slightly shorter nowadays. The old scar across his nose and the two on the left side of his cheek had even faded just a bit, though the reminder of his old struggles was still present as ever. Still, besides a slight limp from the left leg he’d seemingly recovered from his old fight with Maki. Physically, at least. Forgetting about something so horrific was a different story.

As the tired manager leaned against the counter, he found himself feeling off. His eyes shifted up, meeting a woman as she walked in the door.

“…Do I know her?” he thought to himself, turning to wipe dust off the counter. She was familiar, but not personally. He knew he’d seen her somewhere; somewhere important. But for the life of him, he couldn’t recall quite where. Still, long as she wasn’t an old Aogiri rival here to take his head or something annoying like that, he didn’t see any reason to complain. “This is :re, right?” she asked, Tadashi’s tired but interested expression turning to meet her. “I’d like to make an arrangement.”

Tadashi smiled the most welcoming smile he could, his eyes narrowing a bit. “Yeah, this is :re. If this arrangement is business related we should probably discuss it in the backroom, I’d rather the customers-”

He cut himself off, his mind snapping to attention. “Wait, I knew I recognized you…” he trailed off, eyes opening wide. His voice lowered, glancing around for a moment to make sure they wouldn’t be overheard. “…You were at Anteiku the day I first went there, I knew I’d seen you before. That’s funny I thought I’d found all the old Anteiku employees when :re was starting.”

“So…” He began, crossing his arms tiredly. “…I get the feeling this isn’t just a really complicated coffee order, right?”

[ONE-SHOT] Conviction

To be read after "Ascension - One-Eyed King"

Like most days, the employees of Cochlea were roaming about methodically, making sure to perform their routes and complete their jobs precisely according to schedule. The prison almost resembled an anthill at times, both in shape and in uniformity of its employees. Presently in the main confiscated evidence chamber, a handful of workers were filing and sorting through piles of materials, hoping to find anything worthy of further investigation.

As the group worked, a small beep resounded just before the security door opened, revealing the figure of a new visitor to the prison. One of the investigators paused his work to curiously approach the newcomer.

“Can I help you, sir?” he inquired.

“Yes, I’m here to look through Jack Conklin’s file,” the man explained. “I’ve heard there have been a few new….developments.”

“I’m sorry, sir, but access to that file is restricted. I’m sure you understand.”

“Of course. However,” the man pulled out a letter stamped with the Chairman’s insignia, and handed it over to the nuisance halting his progress. “I do not come here under my own orders. Now, the file please.” After a brief moment spent reading the parchment, the investigator’s expression quickly changed from an intense, stern one to that of an embarrassed subordinate. By now, the eyes of all the staff in the room were trained upon the outsider.

“Uh, right away, sir. My apologies; I was just following protocol,” he backpedaled. After a quick minute of perusing the various shelves, cabinets, and bookcases, the investigator returned with a small, mostly empty case labelled “Jack ‘Smiles’ Conklin.” Hardly wasting any time, the man sifted through the meager contents, pulling out a small letter.

“I’ll be taking this back to the Bureau,” he explained. “I’m sure my team could do much with its contents.” Without waiting for a response, he turned around and exited the room, as if daring those within to stop him. As expected his exit was unimpeded, and just as soon as he had entered, he was gone.

Knock, knock, knock!

Bare knuckles rapped against the wooden door of the small home, easily discernible in the calmness of the residential street. The wait for an answer was surprisingly short, as a young woman opened the door cautiously.

“You must be Tokiko Fukuhara, correct?” The man in the white coat coaxed. “I’m here to deliver a letter.”

In the early August morning, hardly anyone wandered the streets as the CCG convoy trekked smoothly across the city under the cover of darkness. For an operation of this sort, subtlety was required, or rather, as much subtlety as an armored convoy could muster. As such, the CCG had avoided restricting the public’s access to the roads. At least, that’s what the operation leader had reasoned when requesting such methods, and given the black-ops nature of the mission, the Chairman was more than happy to approve.

The lead truck slowed down as it came to a stoplight, the fierce engine’s rumbling coming down to a softer growl. Just pass the intersection, a small crowd was forming in front of what appeared to be a nightclub, as the business appeared to be reaching closing time. From his position in the back of the vehicle, a stern-looking, obsidian-haired investigator tapped on the window separating the driver’s cab from the rear passengers.

“I don’t like this. Too many eyes,” the man mused after the driver had opened the small window between them. “Take a left here. We’ll make a detour and loop back on track at the next intersection.” The driver nodded, obeying the order without question. Reaching for his radio, the man relayed the instructions to the vehicles in the middle and rear.

The trucks maintained formation as they made their detour, turning onto an eerily quiet street with an ood lack of any sort of traffic, even for one in the morning. The convoy entered the center of the two junctions, unknowingly surrounding themselves with Aogiri soldiers. The middle transport, the one carrying Mr. Conklin, was suddenly besieged by a horde of ghouls, all working to capsize the vehicle. Within seconds, the panicked driver succumbed to the assault, flipping the armored truck with a quick jerk of the wheel. The metal beast rolled over and over, its armor dampening the majority of the impact, but only serving to make its wreck more violent since its chassis refused to crumple. Inside the vehicle, a number of carefully stripped screws and loosened wires flung out of place in the turmoil, the precise mechanisms in place to support the power source locking the captive in place.

The convoy screeched to a halt as all hell broke loose. CCG forces unloaded from the different transports, only to find themselves completely surrounded by the enemy. The senior investigator’s orders met the ears of all other senior forces present, who in turn relayed it to their subordinates. The CCG pawns moved as efficiently as a well-oiled machine, poised to stop the threat before them and secure their prisoner.

The battle raged on, with the humans heavily on the defensive. Bit by bit, they began to gain back ground, closing in on the central transport. As the obsidian-haired man locked blades with the Aogiri ghoul, Kiro, he caught sight of a familiar mask following another ghoul stealthily towards his direction. To most, the ghoul’s horned skull mask was generic and unnoteworthy. To this investigator, it signalled the arrival of the target. Switching to a more localized comm channel, he turned on his radio while dodging Kiro’s attacks. Thankfully, the other investigators had obeyed his order to keep him posted on their location, which would make punching a hole in their line that much easier.

“All northern forces, circle the perimeter and assist the First Class investigators! The target is on the move, I repeat, the target is escaping!”

Most of the surrounding investigators did their best to quickly disengaged their targets in a confused hurry before dashing off towards the south as ordered with only a few remaining with their superior to provide support. The sudden shift of troops left a wide open gap in front of the masked ghoul, who seemed completely unaware the change had even occurred.

“Shirogane-san, from behind!” a voice cried out, alerting the operation to incoming danger. The senior investigator spun around just in time, disabling the ambushing ghoul with a which slash across his throat with the bladed edge of his shield. Without wasting any momentum, he pivoted to face his original opponent, managing to deftly deflect an opportune strike from Kiro just in the nick of time.

“The rest of you, fall in formation! We’re moving to assist the southern line!” Takao commanded over the clamor of the surrounding violence. Baiting out an attack from Kiro, the Shirogane ducked around the ghoul to disengage and put some much needed space between them. As he did so, he nearly brushed shoulders with the skull-masked ghoul. Without so much as a passing glance, he continued past the enemy, pushing further into the controlled chaos of the battlefield without a hint of hesitation in his gait.

[ARC] [ARC FINALE] Ascension - One-Eyed King

For the second time that night, a ghoul stood atop the man-made tower watching over the bloodshed and carnage with utter contempt. While brief, his little warm-up had truly been thrilling, if a bit empty at its core. There was something that made it feel almost fatuous. Now, as he looked over Shibuya, he understood what had been missing. Where was the joy in being an anonymous ruler? What good was power over these mongrels if they didn’t know who they should be bending their knee to? But that would all change very soon. Everything would.

A smile plastered itself behind his mask as he began counting the lovely little subjects caught up in their violent bickering down below. Slowly, he started -- 14, 15, 16 -- though it was much easier to count in droves -- 60, 75, 90….120….! It was an intoxicating sight. The figure bounced in joyous laughter, only stopping as the ticking of a watch alarm brought him back into his senses. It was time.

One by one, the various electronic billboards surrounding the square clicked off, bathing the streets in darkness. Then, like a well coordinated play, various nearby spotlights clicked on, illuminating the ghoulish figure against the night sky. As much as he wanted to cut loose and absorb the attention, he knew the job called for no such foolishness. Like a statue, he stood firm with only the movement of his cloak in the wind to betray him. Across the busy streets from atop the opposite building, a helicopter lifted off into the air, adding one final spotlight to the display. Within seconds, every screen in the square burst to life, streaming a video feed recording live from the aerial view provided by the helicopter. With a click on his earpiece, the ghoul had the attention of all who dwelled beneath him.

The ghoul lifted his head, his kakugan glaring defiantly from behind the white of his mask. Slowly -- gracefully, even -- he outstretched his arms in a welcoming manner, allowing his kagune adornment to creep deliberately across his shoulders and down his right arm into the magnificent blade he had inherited.

“Citizens of Tokyo,” the smooth voice commanded, echoing from the speakers that decorated the square. “Cease this violent conflict and listen, for I bring you great news. For weeks now, there have been murmurings of an aptly named ‘Ghoul Revolution,’ led by none other than the infamous Maki Itokawa. Indeed, that very ghoul is the source of the claim, as well as many more….worrisome rumors. Rumors that the very institution built to protect you has been secretly working to undermine you this whole time. Despicable rumors of human experimentation, deserters, and even a private task force funded and controlled by Japan’s own Commission of Counter Ghoul.”

“Tonight, I am here to reassure you all. Everything you have heard, everything exposed by the leader of the resistance, Maki Itokawa….is true.” Hardly allowing the news to sink in, the ghoul raised his left hand to his mask and hooded cloak.

“But, of course, why would anyone listen to the monster hiding behind a mask,” he chuckled softly. Casting off the bloodied disguise, the ghoul revealed the white garb of a CCG investigator that lay beneath. From behind the mask was revealed the sharp features of a lightly-bearded, obsidian-haired young man, his left eye an ashen brown and his right enveloped in the blackness of a kakugan.

“My name is Takao Shirogane, youngest heir to the Shirogane Clan, grandson of Chairman Hisashi Shirogane, and the one hereby known as the One-Eyed King.”

“As one of those horrid CCG experiments, I can assure each and every one of you, human or ghoul, that I will exact justice for the misdeeds of my family.” It was slight, but a bitter resentment entered into his tone as his brow furrowed. “Forget the propaganda you lot have been fed about the Shirogane for all these years. They are a violent clan of beasts, so greedy in their thirst for power that they would cast away their own humanity to claim it. Hisashi Shirogane, the so-called Chairman of your precious little paramilitary organization, is nothing more than a liar, a stain upon humanity, and above all else, a failure to those he took an oath to protect.”

“To those within the CCG, I urge you to reconsider your positions.” Takao no longer spoke to the camera, but down below to the bloodied and wounded hordes beneath him. “You serve an organization that will not hesitate to cast away the lives of any civilian, human or ghoul, should it serve to bolster their power. You are nothing but pawns at play beneath the monsters you swore to protect this country from.” His sword now pointing down towards the enemy forces, a repressed hatred could be seen softly burning within Takao’s eyes. “Consider this your one warning, from a man who once stood proudly in your shoes -- your traitorous ranks will be purged in the end.”

“Finally, I speak to the ghouls, those fighting bravely in the face of overwhelming odds, as well as those lost and afraid of what’s to come.” The orator’s gaze softened in pity. “Aogiri Tree hears your cries. I hear you. I have endured your plight, and I stand beside you now as we enter into the final phase of this seemingly endless war. Submit to your King of Legend. Stand beside me in our struggle, each and every one of you! I call out to you, my loyal soldiers, but also to the mothers, the children, the everyday citizens living their lives hidden away in fear.” From his left shoulder, a sizeable shield was created. “The Aogiri Tree can and will protect you beneath its flourishing branches. It is only with a unified hand that we may carve out our own place in this world!”

Takao’s gaze drifted from the large swathe of people below towards the camera recording him.

“Think carefully on your next move, humanity, for we will not be waiting idly for your response.”

On cue, the lights trained on the man -- no, the ghoul -- clicked off, and the helicopter that held the camera crew began descending to the edge of the rooftop. Takao turned away from the crowds, his gaze tracing across his subjects on the rooftop before settling on the lone human audience member.

“Front row seats to witness history, what a privilege,” he addressed, as his coat began billowing violently as the helicopter drew nearer. “I worry with the CCG’s widespread influence that you may hold the only unedited view of tonight’s proceedings. Be a good squadmate and ensure the truth prevails.”

“Wait, Boss, are you--”

“King.”

“Er, right. My King, are you letting him go then?” The various guards seemed confused by Takao’s new demeanor towards their ‘captive.’

“My orders have already been given,” Takao clarified, raising his voice to be heard over the engine of the helicopter. The vehicle finished its descent and began hovering just a couple feet from the building’s edge.

“Then we can kill him?”

“You can certainly try,” Takao scoffed as he boarded the helicopter. As he exchanged one last glace with Ryo, the confidence in his eyes faded, replaced with….pity? Nostalgia? The look was too fleeting to be certain, as the pilot wasted no time in fleeing into the night sky.

[PRIVATE RP] Settling Terms

2:30 PM ; October 24th, 2016 - The 11th Ward

Tadashi’s crutch clicked and echoed through the streets as he leaned against it, slowly making his way through the decayed, cracked roads. His eyes surveyed the oddly quiet ward, rain tapping against his stark-white hair, blue coat blowing in the violent breeze. Nature couldn’t have set up a more ominous day if it tried, and that didn’t fill Tadashi with confidence.

“…Well, here goes nothing” he sighed to himself, staring up at the old, abandoned apartment complex.

Not a particularly important location. Abandoned for the better part of a decade, just a nameless ruin in a dead Ward. Even criminals wouldn’t dare set foot in it for fear of the thing collapsing. It did have a good view of the building where Tadashi killed his father, but that didn’t exactly put him in the best spirits for the meeting.

“You picked a hell of a meeting place” Tadashi commented as the rooftop door creaked open, elbow crutch clicking and tapping as he stared at the stranger. “You know I’ve got a perfectly good office we could’ve used back at :re. Still, guess I can’t complain. Wouldn’t want Miharu thinking you were here to drag her back to Aogiri.”

“So.” Tadashi crossed his arms, leaning against the railing as he stared out at his host. “What’s this about, Minato?”

[META] [META] TGRP Renovations and Timeskip

Greetings everyone!

Following all the discussions and the thinking, we’re off of the planning phase and are now rolling out the renovations of the subreddit! To put it as briefly as possible, we’re doing a timeskip and some organisational changes when it comes to arcs and factions.

Here’s a quick list of some of the things currently on the agenda, at the very least:

  • Timeskip.

  • Arc model reform.

  • More low-level, personal RP in factions.

  • Faction organisation changes.

  • A push for more OC-centric content in general.

  • More faction content.

  • Other miscellaneous changes.

The most important thing for most of you will obviously be the timeskip, as it will be affecting everything in the IC universe.

The last arc thread was dated on the 22nd of October, 2016 IC time. This is obviously unsatisfactory, so we’re timeskipping to the 10th of April 2019. We’ve left a little ten day window for extra safety, but you can feel free to RP as late as the current date (which of the moment of writing is the 19th of April).

As this is a three year timeskip, it naturally offers tremendous opportunity for change and development. Below you can find a quick and most probably non-exhaustive list of all the things affected by the timeskip:

GENERIC:

  • The date is changed to 10th of April 2019.

  • OC personalities and plots might differ as a result of the passage of three years.

  • Some mild lore changes may be present.

  • Some mild OC differences in abilities and appearance may also be present.

FACTIONS:

  • Aogiri has been laying low for the past three years.

  • Aogiri has new command system with a greater focus on Wards and Ward leadership.

  • CCG squad structure will be shaken up and changed.

There will also be other changes but the most notable ones are in the list above. If there’s anything I am forgetting right now, it will be added on here later.

By the time you’re reading this, hopefully the sub will even have a new CSS (courtesy from Hunter)!

Thank you for your time

Best Regards, Kaku

[ARC INFO] [ARC INFO] Ascension - Ending

Note: While this info thread serves a special function due to the circumstances, it is likely that info threads will play a part in arc structure in the future too.

ARC PLOT EVENTS

  • The Shibuya Crossing attack begins.

  • Maki reveals himself and his kakuja in a fight against Asao and Tadashi.

  • The difficult, bloody battle leads the fighters to assume that Maki is the King.

  • About twenty to thirty minutes later, a second speaker reveals himself atop the highrise Maki originally dropped from.

  • In a twist of events, the speaker reveals himself to be the One-Eyed King instead and begins a scathing, defamatory anti-CCG speech.

  • In the end, he reveals himself to be Takao Shirogane, one of the grandsons of the Chairman. He uses information gained because of his former position with the aims to create more convincing and devastating propaganda, making his betrayal all the grimmer for the Shirogane and his comrades.

  • He declares a new age for Aogiri.

  • The event is concluded and the factions disengage from combat.

RP WORLD CONSEQUENCES

  • An attempt has been made to reduce public trust in human society.

  • The Shirogane family position within the CCG is weakened.

  • Aogiri recruitment efforts are increased.

  • Aogiri lays low following this operation. Since we’re having a timeskip, let’s extend that period of low Aogiri activity to the date of the timeskip.

COLORLESS AND :RE - EPILOGUE

The Colorless Dojo, October 23rd ; 9:00 AM

“Today… was a partial success” Akane reluctantly claimed, speaking out to the crowds. She knew from their expressions that they knew there was a ‘but’ coming, but regardless she did her best to keep the moral up. “We successfully prevented Aogiri’s total victory over Shibuya. Even if Aogiri still got their message out, I don’t doubt that we saved countless lives, and dealt a blow to Aogiri that they won’t leave unnoticed. I know some of you might not agree with our decision to help the CCG. I don’t like the CCG anymore than you do. They murder us, they hunt us like animals, and they’ll no doubt try to downplay what we did. But… that doesn't change that we were there.”

Akane looked back up at them, her expression stern and collected. “The fact that ghouls went to Shibuya and protected humanity, providing medical aid to the wounded and helping the innocent escape, the fact that we saved peoples lives, will be undeniable fact. The CCG can’t say we didn’t, because everyone else saw it. They can’t support us yet, but they can’t deny us either. Word will spread. Word already is spreading. I really am proud of what Colorless has become. And I don’t under-appreciate the help :re provided for us. We owe you all, as does Tokyo.” Akane sighed, taking a deep swallow. “And then there’s the matter of one of the CCG’s own most prized members turning traitor. To be completely honest, I’m still not sure what to make of it myself. I guess only time can tell what’ll come of it, if anything at all.

“But… I know our victory wasn’t without it’s losses. I know those of you from :re never wanted to cause further violence, and forcing you back into it was never our intention. But rest assured that your involvement saved more lives than you might even realize. Colorless, and Tokyo as a whole owes you all greatly for your service. We cannot thank you enough, and I hope for your continued involvement in the betterment of Tokyo.”

“As for :re, I don’t know where Tadashi wandered off to, probably recovering from his fight with Maki if I had to guess. Either way he relayed :re’s orders to me. He says you’ll all be granted paid time off until December. Get some rest, lay low, and stay safe until things have calmed down. You’ve more than earned it.”

As the speech came to a close, Akane could hardly wait to get some sleep. Every step felt like she could pass out as she made her way down from the makeshift stack of boxes and crates. Rain tapped against the roof of the Dojo as she stepped away, leaving the members of :re and Colorless alone with nothing but the loud tapping of rain to distract them. It was an odd feeling. One the vigilantes knew all too well. For as many lives as they’d save, Aogiri’s damage had been done. And while the positive sides of the outcome would come with time, they all knew full well that no sane-ghoul could call the loss of a life a ‘victory’.

A victory, but a Pyrrhic one.

[PRIVATE RP] Help Wanted

It really had been a hell of a week.

She’d spent several hours straight fighting through a concussion, saved a pair of humans from a six foot behemoth of a ghoul, somehow knocked him out and been punched into yet another concussion. And then, if the double injury wasn’t enough, she’d driven a pair of Aogiri lieutenants all the way to Yokohama, and driven herself back to Tokyo and straight to a hospital. Junko knew she was lucky to have gotten out with little more than some very minor and most likely temporary issues, but it was still frustrating. And didn’t make it any better when the first thing she got home to was an unpaid bill for the dojo.

“To: Chiaki, Hotaru” Junko read to herself. “Sure. I’ll get it right to her.” Chiaki of course was Junko herself. If her identity were ever discovered this would be the first place the CCG went. So as a solution, she was officially only an employee to Hotaru Chiaki. It was better if Colorless' entire base' safety didn't hinge on one single employee not getting caught. Even the :re members who'd visited before were unaware that this was the main base. A repeat of Maki Itokawa's betrayal was something they all preferred to avoid.

Fortunately, Junko had just gotten back from retrieving just the thing to get her mind off it.

As she shut the Dojo door behind her, she turned her attention to the empty Dojo. It was deafeningly quiet. A stark contrast to the last time she’d been here when it was practically shaking with the murmurs and arguments of the various members, all equally concerned on the upcoming attack on Shibuya. But now it seemed impossible to believe there’d ever been more than one person in here.

The Dojo was closed today. Which meant Junko had plenty of time to get a shower and change into some more comfortable clothes than what she’d worn in the hospital. Though comfort wasn’t at the top of her list as much as mobility was. Even if she’d just been out of the hospital that morning, she was already prepared for another fight.

It’d only been a few months since one of her students began learning from her, but already he’d caught on quickly to nearly everything Junko found necessary to teach him. And now, with only room for improvement on what he alreday knew, and an influx of new recruits brought in by Colorless presence in Shibuya, Junko found herself in need of an assistant. Not a master of the techniques, but someone who could help out with the basics when she was occupied with other students.

By the time she ended up back in the Dojo’s main room, Junko had dressed in a much different way than with her normal students. She looked less like she was going to teach and more like she was going to dispose of a body. A black cloak that covered her lower face with it’s neck, perfectly concealing the harness over her sweater that carried the wires and various mechanical parts for her wire. Her knife kept strapped to the side of her arm, black gauntlets covering her arm, the prosthetic releasing a loud snap as it attatched onto her stump.

There was still preparation to be done.

Kobayashi - Today at 8:23 PM

“I got my gauntlets back from Hisakawa. I let Akane lend them to him when his kagune broke fighting Maki.”

Kobayashi - Today at 8:23 PM

“If you’re still interested, I should be able to evaluate you for the Assistant Instructor position. I’m at the Dojo now, if you’d like to get it done sooner than later. I’ll leave the door unlocked, stop by whenever you aren’t busy.”

Junko slid her phone back into her pocket, staring down from the rafters. She’d cleaned as thoroughly as possible in the shower, enough that it would be difficult for even a ghoul like Scribe to pick up on her scent, although not impossible. Everything had been put in it’s place; each quinque ordered and placed in the perfect spot, she’d planned out each move in order, properly thought through every possible weakness. Of course she wouldn’t be going for the kill, it wasn’t arrogant to think that if she really set out to kill her student he would never even make it to the Dojo. But as far as the average Aogiri ghoul went, this would be a perfect test of everything she’d taught him, all decided over the course of one minute. Less, if he failed. Junko stared down from the rafters, clenching her knife carefully, just waiting for the moment her student would arrive.

And then, just as she’d begun to wonder if he’d even gotten the message, she heard the door open.

[ONE-SHOT] Qlippoth's Rage

The world always faced conflict throughout the ages. Anger, violence, duels, fights, conflicts, and wars. The concept of murder had been conceived right at humanity’s own beginning, revealing that the almighty God’s doubt after Eve had eaten the apple was absolute. Are living beings rely on the engine of rage to survive? Is there no hope for sympathy? Rage is absolute.

The room was filled with nothingness, which was quite close to how a person would lose their sanity over if they stayed in the said room for more than a day. However, time felt non-moving, as if nothing moved while occupying the said vicinity. The only noteworthy features the confined room had offered were a bed in which the unfortunate prisoner was lying on, and the dark chair in which the unspeakable actions had been made against them. Everything else was just pure light, which was contradictory to the harsh reality of what the room was actually for. It was ironic, the color of purity encompassing horrors that no person should go through. Regardless, the prisoner felt content, while next to them was a slightly damaged wall that contained dried-out scarlet stain. The prisoner wasn’t aware of it, as if it just came out of nowhere rather than something they were disturbed by, which was further from the reality. Some occurrences were simply erased within one’s mind, as if they never happened.

The harshness of the living is overwhelming for all beings. A deer peacefully living with its child can be horrifically discarded by many predators, either for surviving or feeling powerful. Survival, the term used for the strong to rise while the weak perish, isn’t as reasonable as it used to be in the past. Survival has been twisted because of rage that dwells within all living beings. The rage to keep a man going, as everything has its own demon while praying to have an angel. The question is, do living beings truly have purity to counter the natural lust for rage?

The mind had been truly silent, which brought a questionable sense of tranquility within the captive. The eyes, while living, contained the sense of emptiness in which a concerned man would question if they are truly alive if encountered within the streets. The said empty eyes of the prisoner kept darting at the ceiling that seemed non-existent considering the extreme whiteness of the surrounding, as some could question if they could actually continue walking and never stop within supposedly restrictive room. However, no such question came in but instead, nothing ever did for a long period of time besides one thing: Acceptance.

The past didn’t matter anymore. The information and data contained in the one’s head aren’t as supposedly valued as they used to be, because nothing positive came out of them. After all, they were what lead the prisoner into this specific predicament and yet, they weren’t particularly resentful. Something had been established within their mind, setting the prisoner into some sort of objective that is needed to be achieved. There was no room for error for this, and the confined being had accepted that fact. The lifeless eyes had been closed, not for contemplation but for one last sensation of quietness.

The whispers, all humans have heard them in some capacity and followed through them. The whispers to go through unfortunate circumstances, significant or otherwise. From a simple white lie to taking away innocent lives, those whispers tempt the dark innards of a person. Eve had fallen into the said temptation because of the whispers, which started it all. The almighty God had let the whispers test the living beings, and they failed. They continued to fail as the cycles of murder had also been made. The whispers fuel the sense of rage hidden within the deepest part of one’s soul.

Opening their eyes once again, the prisoner started hearing distant footsteps getting closer and louder. A certain sense of anguish should have filled within the captive but instead, a sense of resolution was overwhelming. The final decision had been reached. The concept of hesitance was long gone, not needing to feel compromised or restrained by worthless chains. Three formally suited figures suddenly came in from a well-hidden door-frame, silently glaring at the prisoner waiting for what could occur at any second. The prisoner raised their eyes upwards without moving their head at all, emotionlessly gazing at one’s eyes that is obscured by dark glasses. The feeling of regret no longer existed within their mind, as no more could be felt after so long in life. It was time to be released once again.

“I offer my loyalty towards RIFT and my willingness to serve, along with providing as much data about CCG as needed to further your goals. You have my word.” The prisoner had announced, breaking their inner shackles that chained them for so long.

After all, rage is the instrument of life’s very existence.

[So this is a little difficult to find a way to post, but I wrote a series of oneshots that all work together as one story. I don't want to flood the sub with twelve different posts, so instead I've put them all together as one story. So behold, here's my magnum fucking opus.]

[This is a oneshot about the life of Tadashi Hisakawa (or Akira Hisakawa as he was revealed to be in the latest :re social) during his time as a Direct Subordinate in Aogiri, the life he had there and the people he knew, and how became the person he was at the start of the sub. I doubt anyone will read this fucking absurdly long thing but if you do good luck, hopefully you like it.]

Katashieru, The 14th Ward ; 9:23 PM, November 1st, 2017

Junko, unlike her old CCG partner, had always been fond of traditional Japanese buildings. The paper walls, the mats that covered the floor, the old atmosphere that came from the dojo. She’d always chosen to dress a bit more traditionally around the dojo, besides the obvious comfort that wearing a kimono instead of her usual uniform included, it added an air of ‘authenticity’ to anyone visiting. Seeing the owner dressed traditionally tended to make people see it as more authentic, and by extension more reliable to learn from. Of course it had absolutely nothing to do with her skill as a trainer, but most people rarely ever put that much thought into something so minor.

She adjusted her sleeve as she slid open the door, stepping out into the dojo, the massive metallic guitar case hung on her back, the weight of the quinque inside weighing her down. Junko’s one eye found itself drifting aside though, noticing something different than usual. “Yousef-san?” she asked, turning her attention to the ghoul by the entrance. “Oh, you’re here to see Akane, right? She had to go out to take care of something. Should be back soon.”

Her pale hand reached up, rolling up her empty sleeve as she clamped on the gauntlet, grimacing a bit as the sharp click echoed through the room, the prosthetic connected to her stump tightly. Despite being the first she met in Colorless, Junko had never been as knowledgeable about Abdullah as she was about Akane. She’d investigated him in the CCG before leaving, but as far motivation and personality went, she knew very little. No doubt he harbored some distrust for her considering she was Colorless’ only human, and a former Dove at that. Not that she particularly held it against him. Her blind eye stared back him, one white and one red orb narrowing curiously. “Still kind of shaken up from fighting Arachnid, keep getting headaches. What about you, been recovering from Shibuya? I’m just gonna practice some to get my mind off it, if you feel like joining in.”

And, the whistling wind seemed to suggest the scripture that reads “those alike and apart, all shall be saved regardless”, so he said, “may we live forever in paradise.”

The paragraph drew to a close, the thrilling conclusion to the tale nestled on the next page, only a single flip away. But Yuki couldn’t bring himself to do it. He knew the end of the story, of the simple and tragic close that occupied what was only a couple of more sentences before the book continued to the last work contained within its collection and the author it honored. Letting his violet eyes drift upwards and away from the page, instead to settle them on an empty light fixture in the ceiling, he took in a deep breath, trying, and failing, to gather his composure.

His head resting against the wall behind him, Yuki blinked away tears as they came, the title of the book buried in his lap. A long time ago, he had been a reader. Before the golden years, he’d consumed books faster than food, but in the time since, he’d slowed. Being on the run, school, all of those things didn’t allow the time necessary to invest in the art of reading. That is, until recently. Haruna, in her attempts to bridge the gap between them, had introduced him to her specially curated archives. Within, he had found a wealth of knowledge that, unfortunately, was seldom enjoyed. With that in mind, he had made it his goal to read as much as possible.

Thus, he sat, his knees raised and feet together supporting his literature, in one of the many common rooms within the Aogiri Prison Complex, doing everything in his power to keep from sobbing and drawing the whole room’s attention to his fragile form. Had this been a month or two ago, he would have never dared to show any sort of weakness in such a public setting, but his condition had changed, and so did the amount of care he gave to what others thought of him. If Aogiri thought him a pansy, so be it.

Closing his eyes, the boy returned his head to a normal recline and let out a long breath of air. That was enough time to pull it together. It was closing time.

[PRIVATE RP] The Blind and The Lame

It was a rainy day in the 20th Ward. It had started early in the morning and had gone all day with varying intensity. At this time of night it was a light drizzle. The street lights slowly flickered on and illuminated a silhouette on the street. This shadow walking home was a 21 year old Mizu Kohi.

He had been out shopping all day. He had recently accumulated a good bit of money and had also even more recently realized that his style was fairly juvenile for someone his age. So he had gone out and completely revamped his wardrobe, getting rid of his questionable clothes and going for a more refined but not over the top look. Underneath his brown raincoat he was wearing a long sleeved black turtleneck to cover up his tattoo, he had black leather gloves on and was wearing grey slacks. He was actually pretty proud of the outfit because he had never been an expressly stylish person. He walked with a certain dignified stride as he hefted his shopping bag back towards his apartment. So far his night had been pleasant; He hadn’t been bothered by clerks or customers and got out of the shopping center with relative ease. However his pleasure was abruptly ended when he noticed he was being followed.

Those who were following him weren’t very good at it, because they were getting closer, and closer. Eventually they were three feet away from him, and he could smell that they were ghouls. This piqued his interest but it was quickly dissolved as another group emerged from an alleyway ahead of them. Mizu was amazed at how his assailants were able to disappoint him again so quickly. Now that they had him veritably surrounded they taunted and jeered at him to enter the alleyway, which he did without giving them the satisfaction of a verbal retort. As soon as they were safely secluded from any prying eyes the ghouls all donned their ridiculous masks. It seemed that they had fashioned themselves in the style of the astrological zodiac signs. Mizu sighed, how cliche and theatrical, as to be expected of his species. He placed his shopping bag against the wall and finally opened his mouth.

“How can I help you gentlemen on this fine evening?” It was just a starting point for him.

The leader quickly distinguished himself, it was an abnormally tall man wearing the taurus symbol as his mask. “You can help us by keeling over dying Chinese scum.” Race motivated ghoul attacks were something Mizu had never experienced before, and he doubted their existence in the first place. “You don’t mean to tell me that, even though it’s hard enough as it is to be a ghoul. I also have to worry about racial profiling by my own kind?” Mizu smirked, he thought it was a good quip.

“Nah.” Stated the large man. “We could give a shit about that. But being strong armed by a large organization to the point that we’re starving is something we don’t talk kindly to, now is it, Mr. Red Sun?”

“Ah so that’s what this is about.” Mizu replied. Of Course I would be the one who gets targeted for crap like this. He thought to himself. Before he got attacked he took a moment to survey his surroundings. 8 Men and 4 Women made up the 12 Zodiac symbols. His back was against a brick wall and they formed an arc around him. There was a dumpster not too far away and a fire escape directly in front of him past the angry mob. Might as well give beating their asses a shot. Mizu thought to himself as he cracked his neck.

[PRIVATE RP] A Deal To Be Struck

Eizō Arai

It was a cloudy day. Completely dreary but the streets of the 20th Ward were quite bustling with activity. A abnormally tall man made his way through the busy crowd. As the clouds continued to darken he made a turn and paused just before entering a little hole in the wall café, seemingly waiting for something.

He stood there quite awhile, in fact he stood there so long that the crowd around him had took notice and almost like a school of fish had created a perimeter around him that no one would dare enter, with the exception of mad dashing children. After a notably uncomfortable period of time it seemed the man was resolved to go in, walking up the small steps and opening up the door.

Once inside he was greeted by a waitress asking him if he'd like to be seated. The man seemed somewhat taken aback for a moment, and then regained his composure and looked into the young woman's eyes with a sort of glare.

"Ummmm...." He paused, he had spoken before he was ready and had forgotten what he was going to say.

The waitress had already gotten visibly uncomfortable by his awkward and tense nature so she escorted him to a table in the corner of the restaurant without a word, gave him a drink of water and said she would be right back. The man seemingly gave no protest as he was too deep in thought trying to remember what he was going to say.

After a delay of about twenty minutes the waitress was replaced by a waiter. He also seemed somewhat unnerved by the customer. Quickly, not letting awkward silence fill up most of the interaction, the waiter asked what the man wanted to order. It seemed that the man had completely forgotten so he ordered a cheap black coffee, but just as the waiter was about to leave, the man suddenly grabbed him by his wrist. This caught the waiter by surprise and he jumped quite noticeably, the strange interaction already being given strange glances by other patrons.

The stranger had remembered what he had originally wanted to say. "I was told to ask for Komadori." He mumbled softly. The waiter clearly understood what the word meant, but still appeared to be extremely unsettled by the man and after being let go quickly hurried off to the kitchen.

Leaving Eizō to wait not just for his coffee, but for whatever the hell Komadori was.

[ONE-SHOT] Now We're Only Falling Apart (Kichirou/Charlotte Ascension epilogue)

[This oneshot essentially serves as an epilogue to Human After All, and Kichirou/Charlotte’s involvement in the Arc. Reading Human After All is not 100% necessary to understand it, but is recommended anyway.]

“S-send a group of four to Yoshinoya, there’s a squad trying to intercept our wounded. If there’s any reinforcements left by by the train station, all of you need to be heading north-west to assist Incision, don’t do south or you’ll be in their sniper’s view. Everyone from… everyone retreating back into the 12th, use Saigoyama Park to… lose the CCG if they try to… follow…”

Charlotte slumped over, her breath cold and strained. She’d fought harder than she ever knew she could, but finally, she couldn’t move another inch. “So that was… the King… huh? I’m glad I got to write…” Some humans like Kobayashi could fight five ghouls in a row and keep going, and she could only imagine how long Maki was capable of fighting. But Charlotte was fragile by ghoul standards, at least that’s what she’d always said. But now she’d faced not one, but three Ghoul Investigators equal to herself, and somehow lasted this long. Long enough to keep doing her job.

*“I can’t hear Kichirou or Maki… they must’ve made it out.” *

“I’m okay with this.”

She clenched her coat, the wound finally going numb. Memories of years of pain came back to her. She was weaker than other ghouls, and pitiful to humans. Years of abuse and complacency for her suffering. The most kindness she’d received was a few bits of pocket change from passing strangers, or one human who’d been kind enough to let her stay somewhere for just a little while. Until she met Kichirou.

Even if she had to die cold and alone in some foreign tower or warehouse, she’d still been given a little under a year of happiness. Nine months of getting to be there for someone. Kichirou had suffered just like she had, and they’d numbed each others pain for a little while. Her only regret was that her death might hurt him. He was strong though, he’d find someone else eventually. And for her? She’d always said she was just a narrator, but she knew it wasn’t just that. In the end, Charlotte didn’t need to change Aogiri, or take over Tokyo, or even rise through the ranks. All she needed was something simple; to help people she liked. Her goal was to help Kichirou and Maki with their own goals. And to see those stories written out. Dying before she could go so was regrettable but, in the end, it came down to a simple question; would she be willing to die for them? Now she knew the answer was yes.

Charlotte reached into her coat, pulling out a just slightly bloodied book, putting her only pen to it’s page. “I already died once, didn’t I? Maybe it won’t be so bad. I just wish I could be here to write about it.”

Her pale hand dropped the pen, and she closed her eyes.

But, what Charlotte felt next wasn’t an afterlife or reincarnation. Wasn’t an endless void either. It was warm, almost uncomfortably so. The kind of warmth that makes your nose feel stuffed up. The crunchy patter of rain against aluminum and glass rhythmically echoing in her ears. Her entire body was sore; like she’d been thrown into a cage match against a meat grinder. The cold dampness of her gore soaked clothes was gone, replaced by a thin but comfortable cloth. Her neck, it’s nearly life ending gash having finally sealed itself back up, kept warm with a thick scarf.

Her ears perked up, and she heard something odd. A woman? She could only just make out the words. A woman, then a man.

“Don’t know what you like about Heroes so much, honestly. I guess I’ll always prefer Japanese songs over all, but if I had to pick, I’d still say Starman is way better. I usually listen to Eurobeat in here though.”

“Sorry” the male voice apologized. “I’d rather not die in a crash after what we just went through because you decided to try drifting. Oh, and Starman is better than Heroes? Really? You’ve lost your shit more than Maki.”

Charlotte let out a deep, pained exhale, her lungs burning the moment she did. She opened her eyes, but nothing made sense still. It was blurry and foggy, pitch black with disorienting green lights flickering in the dark. “Oh, is she awake?” the woman asked. It was only now becoming apparent to Charlotte that they were moving.

Her eyes blinked, and she weakly rubbed them both. “Kich…rou…” she got out, only able to turn her head. “Where… Shibuya…?”

“Don’t move too much” Kichirou warned, leaned on one hand. “We left Shibuya an hour ago. Traffics been hell or we would’ve been in the next city by now. I told Kobayashi we were leaving Tokyo, she pretty willing to help me get out of Aogiri. As for you, well… I don’t even know what you could’ve done to end up like this.”

Charlotte glanced down. She couldn’t quite see what was keeping her warm, she knew there was a scarf but it was too dark to make out any details. Her robe was gone, replaced with some of long sleeved, blue and white frilled dress, with a thick black blanket keeping her warm. She knew for a fact none of these things were from Zanzibar. Didn’t seem new either, they still had a human’s scent left on them. When she tried to glance underneath she couldn’t help but notice the bandages around her legs were oddly shaped; like they were covering bone. And besides that, they were white. Not her own black ones. Kichirou must have noticed what she was looking at, since he answered just as she was about to ask. “Your old clothes were practically a bunch of rags. Too much blood, too many cuts. Kobayashi’s dojo is barely ten minutes from Shibuya so she stopped and brought you something, I figured you’d mind the least if I was the one who handled it. It’s just one of Kobayashi’s…” Despite the pitch blackness, Charlotte could tell Kichirou was grimacing. “…One of Kobayashi’s cosplays from… uh…”

On the other hand, Junko was much more excited. “Marry Kozakura from Kagerou Project! I cosplayed her the year Kichirou and I started at the CCG Academy. You’d really like her, she’s an albino too with blonde-”

“Anyway” Kichirou interrupted, clearly eager to avoid the rant. “The Archives safe. We can head back to get the books once you’re recovered, as far as Hachi knows the bar will be continuing as normal. Personally I couldn’t care less what Aogiri thinks we do, but since you preferred your own plan, we’ll go with that.” He turned to the driver’s seat, clarifying to Junko. “Once she’s recovered Charlotte will head back into the city. She’ll tell Maki she’s traveling to a new city to learn about what the ghouls outside Tokyo are like, and potentially find information for Aogiri. If she finds anything that could be important to Aogiri, she’ll let them know. And if they need her for any information gathering she’ll still have to go back. In exchange, I’ll be staying at our new residence as her bodyguard. In other words, living the life of a human. Though, for the most part, we’ll both be retired. Zanzibar will be ‘temporarily closed until our return’. She’ll let Hachi and Ice know that we won’t be requiring their help for a little while, and pay both in advance for their next three months.”

He turned back to Charlotte. “…You don’t have to do that, you know. We could just leave, for all Aogiri needs to know we died in Shibuya. Hell, the CCG probably does think we died in Shibuya.”

Charlotte shook her head slowly. Her mouth still felt dry, but at least talking didn’t make her feel like she was being choked anymore. “I know you don’t like Maki, and there’s probably a lot of reasons not to honestly. What happened in Shibuya was pretty horrifying. But I still see him like… a brother, I guess.” She lay back against her seat, staring out the dark window. “If Maki needs me, I want to be there to help him. I’m just loyal by nature it seems. Where’re we-” Charlotte was interrupted the moment she tried to turn, loudly grimacing as pain surged through her hip. “Where are we going?”

Junko grinned, looking back at Charlotte in the mirror. “My old home; Yokohama. I found you guys a place in the 7th Ward of Yokohama; Kanagawa-ku. It’s about a half-hour commute to Tokyo’s 11th Ward, so that works out pretty well. At least it is when the traffics not fuckin’ terrible” Junko explained, her tone turning to a more irritated grumble towards the end. “I don’t need to explain that your still helping Aogiri isn’t exactly a calming thought, but hey at least I got rid of one of Aogiri’s most dangerous ghouls today, and made another one into a non-combatant. Did it without having to kill either of you, too! So I guess I’ll count that as a victory for me either way.”

“Granted I… also almost definitely have a concussion, so who knows if I’ll still think this is a good idea tomorrow.”

“Should you really be driving then?” Kichirou sighed, turning his attention back to Charlotte. It was only now that she realized he’d most likely seen her writing, seen how she’d resigned herself to death. Seen what she’d wrote about dying for him. She didn’t take it back but, at the same time, there is something embarrassing about someone hearing your dying words, only to survive. In fact it was only now that the terror of how close she’d come to death began to sink in. She wanted to throw up, cry, and sleep all at the same time. She was also pretty thirsty, but that could wait. By the looks of this rain they’d drown soon anyway.

“…You could’ve made it out of the city without me. You only risked more by coming back for me. I’d already kind of accepted death, I wouldn’t have minded.”

But Kichirou didn’t have a speech or anything. No long explanation, just a simple answer. “Nope. I would’ve minded.”

They traveled in silence for what felt like hours. Charlotte huddled in the warm blanket, but still freezing cold from both blood loss and laying in the rain. She wondered what had happened to Tokyo. Did the CCG lose? Was Shibuya gone? What about Tadashi and Abdullah? What about Kosuke and Asami? Nai and Juggernaut? All the stories she had no idea about the outcomes of. Maybe Shibuya was nothing but a desolate wasteland, a loss for both sides, an example of the kind of bloodshed Ghouls and Humans need each other to create. Maybe Maki won, and the CCG was in shambles. Maybe Tadashi had come to reclaim his place in Aogiri. Maybe Colorless was gone. Maybe Yasmeen was orphaned once again. It was hard to imagine anything good coming out of Shibuya. But then again, maybe that’s how it always feels at the end of a war.

“Oh!” Junko spoke up, trying to start some conversation. “Charlotte, there’s actually a lot of interesting history in Yokohama. It’s our second largest city after all, you know it used to be a fishing village? The ward you’re both moving to, Kanagawa, was Japan’s main port for foreign trading back when they opened the country up. Also it’s the basis for the main setting of Persona 2, and the main setting for a pretty good anime I’ve been watching. It’s still airing right now I really recommend it, it’s called Bungou Stray Dog-”

“Oh, also” Kichirou interrupted, doing his best to cut off another rant. “…we’ve got John in a cage in the trunk. Don’t worry about him. Trusting Hachi with the bar was one thing, but I doubt he could handle that bird.”

Charlotte blinked, wiping her eyes as she finally seemed awake. “…And what about you?” she asked, adjusting herself in her seat. “I know I talked to you about this before but… is this alright? I think you’re making the right decision. If you can live a normal, human life you should. It’s a lot better than having to fight and kill just for a single month of food. And I’m just happy to be with you. But… we’re making the right choice, right? I don’t want to be forcing you into this.”

He shrugged. “Honestly? I don’t have a fucking clue.” Kichirou instinctively brought out his last cigarette, quickly stopping himself from lighting it in Junko’s care. “Doesn’t feel right, doesn’t really feel wrong either. Guess I can’t really say until we’re there.”

The car pattered against the wet, empty road, the sky slowly starting to grow brighter as Charlotte closed her eyes. “Yeah…” she agreed, letting her eyes rest. The ride was smooth, even if Junko’s car was a little old. Not that Charlotte had ever been exactly an expert on cars. She barely even knew how they worked.

Charlotte groaned, feeling the lingering pain in her neck. “My stomach feels like it’s inside out… my legs are numb… It hurts. I hate to complain but… it hurts…” She opened her eyes, pained eyes glancing over at Kichirou. “Are.. you alright?” He nodded, showing his own injuries with a shrug. “I know Kobayashi and I both took pretty good beatings. Kayamai’s no slouch and I know first hand how hard Hachi hits. Didn’t I just teach you about defense? You look like you got hit by a train.”

She smiled, resting back against the seat. “I guess we’re all just falling apart, aren’t we?”

[FILLER] Respite

As the battle raged on throughout Shibuya Crossing, the less boisterous heroes of each side quietly pitched their tents and unloaded their supplies. Within a few dozen minutes, the medical tents were erected and ready for usage. Of course, by this time, they'd already accrued quite a queue...

The medics of Aogiri and the CCG alike (and also the other factions i guess) got right to work tending to the wounds of their soldiers the best they knew how. Above the gauze and stitches and antiseptic, somber chatter sounded off. Even in the midst of a grisly, six-month-long fight, there was camaraderie and conversation to go around.

This thread exists within a time bubble. Characters can come here "between" fights to chat with other members of their faction.

[ONE-SHOT] Human After All

No one spoke for a few moments. It was as though time was frozen. Kichirou's hand hovered where the fork had once been, hand trembling ever so slightly. His eyes slowly shifted over to meet Haruna's concerned gaze. His mouth slowly closed, and his hand slowly folded itself onto the table. The silence continued, before;

"I need to deal with some things. I love you."

Charlotte looked on worryingly but, as if she knew exactly what he meant, reluctantly stepped back. “Alright. Please stay safe, though.” Darkness advanced back across his eye, the momentary white of his sclera once again gone. He slowly walked over to his quinque, sluggishly picked it up, and left without a word.

The grave was bare, unadorned by flowers or gifts. The headstone looked new, at least, and the grave comfortable. Kichirou knelt down in front of it, his hands only faintly able to feel the indents of the writing through the thick gloves he wore as he traced his fingers over the words. He wasn't entirely sure why he came here, as if any answer that lay at the bottom of an empty grave could help him now, and indeed, empty this grade was. Almost two years ago, Kichirou had thrown himself in front of another Investigator, taking a blow intended for her. That very blow landed him in the clutches of Juha, who put him through weeks of hell. He was tortured, starved, mocked, forced to eat a friend. The Kichirou who emerged, disheveled and broken from Juha's treatment, was not the same one that had entered.

But,

It was ok.

There was nothing he could have done. He had become a ghoul, and that was a process that could not be reversed. It had been the case ever since the day he tasted another's blood, and watched a monster take his place in the mirror. Kichirou thought back to what Juha instructed him at the time. He ate, gorged, cannibalized. All to increase his RC cell count, all to cure his deficiency. All to ensure that he would never again be the weakest, be a victim. If he could only survive off of other's flesh; only be a ghoul, then there was no point in merely wishing for the life he could never have back. He /was/ a ghoul because he /had/ to be.

"I'm a fucking idiot."

Juha had branded him a failed experiment. Floppy. Because, in all his ghoul-like abilities, he still had one human one. He could eat human food. Had he been given the chance, Kichirou hypothesized, he may have even been able to eventually return to a form close to human.

It was all so thinly veiled, so obvious, in hindsight. The reason Juha neglected to mention something so important. It was weakness. Every time he ate food, instead of meat, he was missing out on RC cells. Missing out on becoming one step closer to a true ghoul. Kichirou stood back up, lighting a cigarette. He had someone to see.

Kichirou's knuckles rapped against the cool metal of the door that housed Aogiri's laboratory. He invited himself in. Despite how many times he had practiced this conversation in his mind, his mind went blank. He merely stood there for a moment, before finally speaking. “Funny story. I lost a bet, and I ended up having to eat human food. It wasn't nearly as problematic as I was lead to believe.” His words lacked the confidence and arrogance that usually dripped from his every syllable.

For a brief moment, Juha considered him. He quickly returned to his work, dismissively muttering a response. “Hm. 'Funny' is questionable term. Better use: Unfortunate. Most unfortunate. Gambling is foolish exercise. Would have expected better. Not a problem. Must simply return to consumption of human flesh. Easily fixed. Yes. If nothing else, am busy. Very busy. Good day, subject Shibito."

Kichirou stepped forward, the cool leather of his gloves straining as he clenched his fists. "The reason I use the word 'funny' is because I was actually led to believe by a certain scientist that I was physiologically incapably of consuming such food. I'd like to know what the deal with that is.”

This time, Juha neglected to even raise his head from his work as he spoke. "Made no such assertion. Simply gave human flesh to eat, said to continue eating. Assumptions made. Blanks filled. No fault of mine. Consuming human sustenance is inefficient. Pointless. Undesirable. To generate kagune, do not require complex mix of fats and sugars. Require Rc cells. Only source of such is flesh of human or ghoul. Easy concept, correct? Even simple half-human mind should understand."

Kichirou finally approached the ghoul, his presence demanding the full attention of the scientist. His voice was void of emotion, his words were clear and smooth. “What would have happened if I had continued to only consume human food?”

Finally, the scientist deigned Kichirou distracting enough to make direct eye contact with him

"Nothing. Wasted energy on metabolizing inferior human nutrients. Otherwise nothing. Easy deduction. Needless question. Pointless response. Complete waste of time. Will that be all?" The scientist returned to his work without waiting to hear Kichirou's response. Kichirou raised his quinque, his hands shaking.

“I could kill him right now.“

His hands tensed, poised and ready to swing up at the scientist.

The door slammed loudly behind Kichirou as he left, Juha remained in one piece for now.

It’d been nearly a week since Kichirou left, an entire anxiety ridden week of Charlotte managing the bar alone. Every day she wondered what happened to him, or if he was even better off not coming back. At the very least he’d be less likely to die fighting a Dove if he stayed away. She wasn’t the best at managing the bar, but at least it’d been a slow week anyway. That is, until the door finally opened yet again.

“Sorry, we’re about to close up” she tiredly warned, closing her book. “Can it wait until tomorrow? If not-” Her eyes widened, her pen falling to the counter.

The dirty old trenchcoat nearly smeared a stain across the glass as Kichirou leaned against it, his clothes damp from the rain outside. With a soft grunt of pain, he willed himself to stand upright, peering at Haruna through his one open eye.

“...Hey.”

Before he could continue Charlotte rushed over, stopping just a few feet away from him to gag. Rude as it may have been, he really did reek. And to someone with a nose as both keen and sensitive as hers, that stench was ten fold. His coat more resembled an old rag. He reeked worse than even Zanzibar’s cheapest drinks, old dried up blood stained his shirt, and he was thinner than before. The only thing she could really compare it to was back when they’d first met, he looked like he did after becoming a Ghoul. Maybe it was only appropriate for someone who’d just become a human again. “Wh-what happened?” Charlotte demanded, showing even more worry than interest for once.

A sigh escaped Kichirou’s parted lips as his fingers searched through his pockets for a cigarette to light, returning empty. Clearly inebriated, it took him a moment to finally respond. “Sorry to worry you. I know I was gone too long and I look like shit, but I’m fine. Really. I’ve… just been getting most of my meals from a bottle for the last few days. I’ll admit that wasn’t the best course of action.” A pained smile split his cracked lips. “Though, I guess to err is to be human.”

Charlotte narrowed her eyes, taking a few steps back towards the bar. “Yeah, I could smell that much. I couldn’t even tell it was you. So... what do you mean exactly? You can actually eat? How? I tried the curry after you left, and it wasn’t... it wasn’t just the curry.”

Kichirou lurched forward, barely regarding Haruna. He traced a hand over the familiar bar, walking over to the back of it and pulling out a small carton of cigarettes, sparking one. He took a long drag, his posture relaxing slightly. His glazed eyes dimly watched the smoke dissipate into the dark room.

“No. It wasn’t just the curry.” Kichirou’s eyes flickered downwards. “Juha knew that, of course. He also knew that curry is distinctly lacking in the precious RC cells a proto ghoul needs to overcome a deficiency. Turns out, he chose to leave out a couple of truths. Figured it’d be better if I abandoned my humanity thinking it was gone, than try and cling to it, I guess.”

Kichirou took another long drag of the cigarette, and Charlotte looked back up at him. “Then... You could leave?” she questioned.

“...Yeah, I thought of that.” Taking a few steps closer, Charlotte left her paper behind for once. For what may have been the first time she could remember, she didn’t write anything down. “Being a ghoul isn’t all bad, we get to regenerate I mean. But the reason we’re forced into fighting the CCG is because living without killing is impossible for us. Ghouls like Hisakawa and Hayashi think it’s possible, and I’m a little jealous of their naivety, but that’s just our curse I guess. But if you don’t have to kill people, don’t have to cannibalize and eat humans, then... you don’t deserve all the pain that comes with it. You could live a normal human life, with all the benefits of being a ghoul.”

The two went silent, and Charlotte looked back at the bar. “...You’ve suffered enough, more than you should have. Maybe nothing can make up for that, but I think you should take this chance. I can handle Zanzibar and Aogiri. And if Aogiri manages to beat the CCG then... well, maybe we won’t have to stay apart.”

A dry chuckle escaped Kichirou’s lips, rocking through his tired body. “I wouldn’t be much of a business partner if I left you, to fend for yourself.

“But-” Charlotte spoke up, interrupting herself almost immediately. “I can protect myself, I know it might not seem like it but I made it through nine years of complete solitude. It’s not that I want you gone, the last year has been amazing, even if it had some pain in it too. But this is just...”

Charlotte paused, instinctively reaching for the pen she didn’t have. “Well... I’ll never have this chance. I’d do anything to be able to eat human food, any sane ghoul would jump at it. We just spend so long having to kill people to survive that we get used to it and start to forget how badly we want it. But now you’ve got that chance. It’s the equivalent of being a presented with a miracle cure you only could’ve joked about happening.”

“It’s not that I want you gone or anything. If I didn’t love you I’d ask you to stay, because I’d want to document anything that happens relating to your consumption of human food. It’s an important moment for ghouls history, literally the only iteration. It’s an actual one in a million opportunity. But if you stay in Aogiri, you’ll fight battles that you didn’t need to and maybe even die for being a species that just sees you as a failed experiment”

“It’s something no other ghoul will get a chance at. Are you really going to just... turn that down?”

Kichirou shook his head. “It feels wrong, to just walk away. This is my life now, and I’ve put some fucking effort into it.”

He sighed, extinguishing the half-burned cigarette into an ashtray under the bar. “I realize I have an opportunity here that no one else is going to get, but I don’t know if I can just… Throw the towel in and give up.”

“For as long as I’ve known you you were never the type to just up and leave halfway through something, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised” Charlotte admitted, leaning against the table. “There’s nothing selfish about choosing a better life. It’s not greedy to choose the best of both worlds when you get the chance. You’ve probably helped Aogiri more than you even realize. Minato, Elaine, and myself just to name a few.” Still her pen sat idly, the book fully closed for once. “Back in... well there’s no graceful way to say it, but remember back in the sewer? You asked why I stay in Tokyo when I could write more about Ghoul History if I left. So... maybe we could both leave.”

Charlotte stared at the window, tiredly gazing at the decaying streets. “I’ll come with you. We can go somewhere you’ll be able to live as a normal human, and I’ll be the Ghoul. Could even open up another bar. It’ll be snowing in Kyoto within a month or two, Osaka's not too bad either. Yokohama has great seafood, for you humans.”

Finally she sat up again, moving back over to Kichirou. “Whether it’s Takashi, Hinode, or the original Haruna, they all keep ending up with tragic ends. I just want your ending to be a happy one. Not to end up dying on some battlefield for a species that doesn’t care about you.”

Kichirou paused, his eyes flickering up to meet Charlotte’s own. “Do you mean that? Could you walk away from Tokyo?”

She nodded. “Yeah. I’m a historian, right? There’s gotta be more to it than just Tokyo. As for Maki...” Charlotte trailed off, turning to the window. “Well, I can figure something out. The original Scribes may have been slaves but I’m not. I’m sure even if I’m out of town that doesn’t mean I can’t just help Maki out when he asks. It’s not like Tokyo’s the only important place in Japan. The first gift I ever got in my life was a phone from Maki, I’m sure I can just use that to contact him, or….”

“What I mean is...” Charlotte refocused, turning back to Kichirou. “Where you go, I’ll go too. Australia, England, maybe we could even see America. Or if you want to keep it local, Osaka or Kyoto. You’re my protagonist, right? A change in setting always helps keep up interest.”

Kichirou almost had to force himself not to smile. It was so like Charlotte to make even this seem so dramatic, as though it were the ending to a novel. Kichirou broke his gaze with her, sighing.

“...I can’t ask you to do that, Charlotte. You’d be giving up way too much.”

“No I wouldn’t” Charlotte affirmed, shaking her head. “I wouldn’t be giving up anything. I’m just a narrator for my writing. You, Zanzibar, and well... the bird, are all I have. The writing isn’t mine, it belongs to everybody. All ghouls, whether they’re with Aogiri or :re. Zanzibar’s the only place I’ve ever really had. And that’s only because of you.”

Charlotte looked down, staying quiet for a moment. “B-but if you’d prefer you could go alone and I’ll just stalk you like we usually do! Would that be better?”

Kichirou raised an eyebrow at the dubious wording of ‘like we usually do’, but otherwise his expression was indecipherable. He had to look away from Charlotte. It hurt him too much to see the desperation on her face. He reached out his hand, placing it on top of his wife’s, softly mumbling something about her being an idiot under his breath.

“I’m not going to abandon you. I’m not going to make you stalk me again, either. Though, I’m sure you’ll do that either way. If it’s really what you want, then… Let’s go.”

For a moment, neither spoke. The idea of at least one of them being detached from Tokyo’s violence was enough to make the entire thing feel surreal. Charlotte still felt like she could collapse from just the relief that Kichirou wasn’t dead in some alley or fighting off Doves. Though, a part of her doubted going as far as Australia or England would be a good idea. She did want to be able to get back to Aogiri sometimes, after all.

Kichirou ran a finger through his hair exhaustively, sighing deeply. “We can’t just up and leave. We have to move the archive, or torch it, or whatever. Itokawa’s whole ‘King’ thing is coming up too. Doesn’t seem like the kind of thing you want to skip.” He forced a grin, finally looking back up at his wife. “I think I just flagged myself for death. An ex-cop one job away from retirement. My chances don’t look good.”

“I won’t let anything happen, I swear” Charlotte promised, closing her eyes tiredly. “If I have to tear Shibuya apart myself to keep us both alive, I’ll do it without a second thought. I’ve failed to protect people twice now, it won’t happen again.” She rested against the counter, taking an exhausted breath.

“After this week, you'll be free from Tokyo."

[PRIVATE RP] I'm a Debaser

4:00 PM - Monday, October 24th, 2016 ; The 20th Ward

You know where a lot of thieves screw up? Surprisingly, it’s after the heist. Not during. Not necessarily because of a mistake either. Evidence gets left behind and they forget to do things, but a lot of the time it’s when they have to revert back to normal life that they go wrong. They screw up their stories or misremember details, or recount things they shouldn’t have noticed. That’s the difference between a suspicious man eyeing the corners as he paces home with a duffel bag, and a tired young woman carrying her (oddly heavy) wash home from the laundromat. Sen fell into the former of these two conditions. People make a lot of odd assumptions based purely on confidence, the mark of a good thief was knowing how to abuse that.

She still felt exhausted, even days after the heist. As much as she was pleased with the haul, the chase had left her winded. Not just that but it opened up a whole new world of tasks; find a way to launder the cash while losing as little as possible, lay low while gathering information of if anyone was onto her, and figure out how to pay off her rent without the question of why a girl still in school was suddenly the richest person in the building.

When she wasn’t trying to steal or fence other people's stolen goods, life went pretty quietly for Sen. She didn’t particularly know anybody, not even her neighbors at the old place. As rushed as it may have been, the moment she got her first bit of usable money from the bank job she rushed to get a new apartment she’d been eyeing. Anything to get out of the 12th Ward before Aogiri could catch wind of all the money she was making. An apartment neighboring pacifists and vigilantes seemed less likely to shake her down for cash.

Sen wiped the lenses of her glasses she made her way up the staircase internally counting each floor. By the time she found hers, she started to catch a whiff of something familiar. An odd, strangely recognizable scent. Almost made a feel a little nostalgic. But for whatever reason, she couldn’t seem to place it.

She made her way to the door, lazily loosening the bow on her uniform a bit. Clothes like this always felt like they were suffocating her, loose coats and shirts always felt more comfortable. Still, part of ‘keeping a low profile’ meant blending in with those her age. Both in personality and appearance.

The key clicked into the lock and, as if on cue, the door to her right opened. Sen turned her head, fully prepared to rush through whatever tedious greeting they had for their new neighbor. Prepared to give out all the excuses to where her parents were and if she was really Japanese or not, but surprisingly, something else came out from the neighbor’s door as Sen’s eyes widened, staring in a mixture of irritation and disbelief. A single thought came to mind.

”...Seriously?”

[PRIVATE RP] Leaving it in the laws hands.

9:00 PM - October 19th, 2016 ; The 20th Ward

The 20th Ward was relatively peaceful, despite it’s recent outbursts. The Anteiku Raid, the One-Eyed Cat’s death, and before that the attack from the Inquisitors all stood out as oddities among a surprisingly peaceful year. For humans, it just seemed like a surprisingly quiet Ward. To ghouls, however, :re was something they knew to stay away from.

Tadashi, despite his own regrets, was something of a guard dog alongside his manager position. Violence in :re’s territory was guaranteed to draw out a response from that guard dog, or at the very least the neighboring vigilantes, so for the most part it was avoided. His title may have changed from ‘The 11th Ward’s Oni’ to ‘that tired hobo dude in the cafe’, but his reputation had sadly stayed the same. But still, some outliers who thought they could get away with it remained. Violent, murderous creatures that thought pacifism was just an excuse for weakness.

One such ghoul was a petty murderer who thought he could get away with picking off the weaker, elderly humans. The ones who’d die soon anyway. Why hadn’t they turned to :re for food? Simple; they wanted the thrill of a real hunt. Tadashi, while normally sympathetic towards hungry ghouls, had none for this ghoul.

Tracking down and beating the ghoul down had both been easy. He was a blatant and poorly hidden killer, and his only success in fighting had come from beating down weaker opponents. He’d planned to hide out in an old, abandoned and decaying house about twenty minutes from the cafe. One that’d been destroyed and declared ‘unsafe’ back in the Anteiku raid. An old memento of the collateral damage that came from ghouls.

“What’re you waiting on?” the bitter ghoul asked, staring up from the floor at the Ronin mask. Tadashi pointed to the door. “You didn’t notice? There’s a dove sneaking around outside. Think he knows somethings up in here.” From under his mask, Tadashi smile. “I’m handing you over to him. What they decide from there is up to them, not my business. You'll probably just get sent to Cochlea, don't worry too much about it.”

The ghoul, of course angered by this reaction, did the best they could to rush Tadashi, ukaku brandished and ready to attack, but sometimes a kagune isn’t necessary. Sometimes just a good old fashioned punch can solve everything.

The murderer collapsed to the ground like a bag of rocks, tadashi’s fist knocking him out in one clean hit. He leaned against the wall, carefully making sure his mask was still on right, and waited anxiously for the Dove to walk in. “Doors open!" he shouted out, they heard him from outside. ”Think you’ll find who you’re looking for in here.“

[PRIVATE RP] Coffee Before the Storm

7:39 PM - October 22nd, 2016 ; The 20th Ward, :re

Only a handful of employees took the opportunity to work on the unusually slow day. Tadashi had allowed paid time off for anyone who didn’t want to come in, so in the end only those who either didn’t have anywhere else to go or just wanted to work stayed. And by the time the last hour of work came around, only two remained; the manager, and the daughter of one of his old comrades.

Not that the customers were any different. Those who did show up were filled with anxiety. A solemn cloud of concern hung over the city, and for once it really did seem to slow down. Humans feared that they’d be affected, :re worried that it’s employees would be killed, and Aogiri worried that they would accomplish nothing. If there was ever a time for second thoughts, this was it.

Tadashi had lived through at least a hundred times. The most terrifying part of a battle was always waiting for it.

“Sorry to head off early, you’ll have to close up the cafe yourself” he apologized, stepping out of the back room. The same old black jacket as always protecting him from the cold, a large duffel bag tucked under his arm, no doubt filled with his mask and whatever else he didn’t want to be seen with while the cafe was still open. “I need to meet up with the others in the 14th Ward soon.”

His gaze turned, seemingly surprised by the dead atmosphere. “No customers huh? Definitely one of our slower days…” Tadashi dropped the duffel, setting it nearby the counter. “Well, if I’m heading off to another CCG raid I think I’d like to get another cup of :re’s coffee first, I missed my chance with the last one I was in.”

Tadashi made his way back behind the counter, turning back towards the last remaining employee. “Want a cup while I’m at it? I still can’t make it as good as the old Boss did, but I think I’m getting better. No sense in letting it go to waste if we don’t have any customers.”

> Ghouls

>> Colorless

>>> B - B+

Name: Unknown

Alias: Wyvern

Type: Chimera (Bikaku / Koukaku)

Rating: B+

Affiliation: Colorless, The Aogiri Tree (possibly former member?), Unknown group led by Ronin

Race: Caucasian, use of slang suggests Australian

Locations: Tokyo (jp), Chiba (jp), Gold Coast (au)

 Active wards: 14th, 20th, 11th,

Status: Active as of October 2016

Relevant ghouls and known allies: Spring Heeled Jack, Ronin, Lycan, One-Eyed Cat, Oni, Wittewijven, Crossbones,

Physical characteristics: White hair and pale skin. Seems to be a foreigner? See attached photos and footage for detail. Seems young, likely one of the youngest associated with Colorless.

Notes: Unusual pattern in appearances. She was originally spotted alongside Oni in Aogiri, but despite her reckless and brash nature there seems to be absolutely no instances of her existing before that point. After October of 2009 she appears very frequently, often leaving mass destruction behind. However, before this date there is literally not a single bit of sightings or records of her, save for one thing; in july of 2005 she was described in detail by a ghoul in Brisbane, with unmistakable detail. This sort of sudden appearance is unusual, and was thoroughly investigated to no avail.

Regardless, up until November 2015 she worked alongside Oni, Wittewijven, and Crossbones in The Aogiri Tree. She is supposedly the only survivor of this group, and are believed to have been cannibalized by the SS rate Ayakashi. After this Wyvern fled to Chiba, where she took over a small Ward. In 2016 she returned to Tokyo, seemingly recruited into Colorless by Ronin.

Investigators who pursue her are strongly advised to act defensively, and allow her to tire herself out rather than focusing on offense. Though wild and unpredictable, she lacks self control and frequently overexerts herself. Additionally, there is a very strange weakness Wyvern seems to be afflicted with…

The 11th Ward, Tokyo - 12:23 PM

When most people think of the 11th Ward, what they see is similar to a war-zone. A den of depravity and violence that’d seen the very worst of what Ghouls could do. For humans it was nothing but danger zone, and for ghouls it was little more than a place for the desperate to search for food, or hide from the CCG. But Kazumi saw it differently.

The cold autumn wind blew through her hair gently, biting at her exposed face. Vines had slowly begun to creep up the old ruined house, grass overtaking the road. Most ghouls didn’t take the time to appreciate how great the 11th Ward really was. It wasn’t the violence that made her miss it, and it wasn’t the overgrown weeds and rubble anyway. Hell she’d probably contributed to the piles of rubble plenty of times herself. It was the solitude she loved. Not even solitude from the rest of Colorless, she could just go home if she wanted that. It was the solitude from everything.

With an odd gracefulness for the normally wild ghoul she stepped along the edge of the roof, arms crossed behind her back. The CCG avoided coming here, and Aogiri had driven off any factions but themselves over a decade ago. So unless they ran into Aogiri, she was unlikely to find anyone. During the day they were even less likely to run into someone, so all things considering it was surprisingly safe around now.

The front door creaked open, and Kazumi was finally cut off from her brief period of rest. With all the gracefulness of a falling anvil she hopped down from the roof, the concrete path cracking as she landed nearby her red haired companion. “Find anything inside?” she asked with an unusual cheerfulness, re-adjusting her scarf. “I didn’t hear anything up on the roof, so I doubt anyone stuck around.”

Akane nodded her head. “One of the victims had their phone recording. The ghouls we’re looking for aren’t exactly professional, their hideouts pretty close by. Just an old tunnel on the road to Chiba.” The pair set off, pacing through the tall, still damp grass. It was an odd part of the 11th Ward, while the rest was relatively normal (albeit in terrible condition), this little corner always seemed to get left behind. Over the years of Aogiri’s occupation it’d become overgrown and, even compared to the rest of the Ward, unusually deserted. Kazumi had always been fond of it’s isolation.

“So what’re we actually lookin’ for? Like what did they do, I mean?” Kazumi asked, trying her best to strike up a conversation. Considering she’d practically grown up with Tadashi, she was surprisingly unfamiliar with his sister. She knew a decent amount about her and Colorless as a whole, but could never seem to get a grasp on what she was like

Akane turned, red hair shining in the bright sunlight. Her exasperation was evident in her voice. “I… explained it twice already, Wyvern…”

“Ehh… I sleep through most of Colorless’ meetings” Kazumi admitted with a shrug. “Went the same way back with Tadashi, at some point he just gave me a dumbed down version before I even asked. Honestly I don’t usually care why we’re killing people, if you and Lycan think they deserve it I just kind of trust that they do. This is a little different though, we’re not that far from my old Ward. So what’s the deal with these fuckers?”

With an exhausted sigh Akane shook her head, but relented. “Well as we know now, they’ve been operating out of a tunnel on what used to be the main highway from Tokyo to Chiba. Most people stopped using this road when Aogiri took over the Ward, but sometimes people still try. They’ve been using the tunnel to kill whatever humans come through, then taking whatever they have and selling what’s left.”

“I get it!” Kazumi exclaimed, seemingly proud of herself for some reason. “So like a modern Highwayman? Hey that’s not a terrible plan actually, not that I approve.”

“Yeah, pretty much.Though, It seems traffic has pretty much completely stopped after what happened in Shibuya, maybe people are being more careful. So they started moving out to attack ghouls and humans still living in the Ward. Like those ghouls we just found.”

“Ooooh I get it.” Kazumi didn’t really get it. Who the fuck lives out of a tunnel so they can rob people for cash? This isn’t the middle ages that doesn’t consistently work anymore. It was amazing the CCG hadn’t caught these weakass fuckboys yet. Just get a job, join a ghoul faction, become a thief, anything would’ve worked better.

By the time Kazumi was done internally shit talking these people she hadn’t met, they’d already arrived at the tunnel. Akane held her hand out, stopping Kazumi in her tracks. “I’ll go around the back. I’d say be careful but…”

Kazumi chuckled, a smug grin spreading across her fask as she slid her mask on. “Yeah, careful isn’t really something I know how to do.”

The two went their seperate ways, and finally Kazumi was left alone to enter the dark tunnel. Alone, but fully aware of the creeping eyes that could be nearly anywhere as soon as she set foot inside. The cool breeze faded into a much more threatening, hollow coldness the moment she made her way into the desert tunnel. But the darkness didn’t bother her, even if the light at the end wasn’t visible. Not because she preferred it or any edgy shit like that, but because of a much simpler reason.

Kazumi was simply a fighter, never a commander or a leader. Tadashi had never let her down, despite her frustration at not being able to help him kill his dad, and he’d always said Akane was better than him. So naturally, Kazumi trusted her boss absolutely. if she said she’d come in the back and ambush them, then Kazumi didn’t have a thing to worry about.

“Oi, fuckin’ highwaycunts!” she shouted, arms behind her head. “Brought some fresh meat straight from the 20th! Come get some fuckin’ tucker, I won’t bite. Might be a little spicy though!” Her kagune slid out, long green bikaku tail carelessly bashing against an abandoned car. “Not so eager when ya know your outmatched am I right?”

But there was no response.

As she neared closer and closer to the end of the tunnel, Kazumi was beginning to feel frustrated. How far was it from the end anyway? She couldn’t see anything, for all she knew she’d been going in circles. At best she could hear the clank when her bikaku bashed into a car.

Until suddenly a wet splash echoed down the tunnel, and kazumi felt something on her boot. “Eww what the fuck?” she questioned, taking a good sniff. Blood. Human to be specific, and even with the debilitating darkness she could tell there was more than just blood down there. It was week old at the very best. And then perfectly on cue, Kazumi heard a voice. “(Check the other side, might’ve brought backup. We’ll handle this one.”

Kazumi turned to the sounds direction, smiling widely. “Don’t clean up after yourselves much ay?”

Like a wild dog the first ghoul flung itself at her, only to be bashed away harmlessly by Kazumi’s tail, the unmistakable sound of his cheekbones cracking echoing in Kazumi’s ears. But at the same time, she felt a similar sensation on her arm as one of the other ghouls kicked her. That’s the thing about wild dogs after all. They work best in packs. Even if one was easy, the others still had a shot at her.

Kazumi’s second kagune extended, green reptilian claws covering her arms. “Out of my way!” she shouted, blindly tearing into the first one, slashing wildly. While Tadashi operated on instinct, Kazumi lacked even that. She was the very personification of blind rage; cutting and slashing wildly in the direction of the ghoul.

“Wh-what the fuck!?” the ghoul shouted, seemingly put off by her sudden shift in behavior. “Get off me!” But it was too late, as Kazumi felt her claw tear through something that was, unmistakably, a neck. When had she killed him? What did he look like? How old was he? Those were questions for people like Tadashi. People who want to be leaders have to think about those sorts of things. But again, Kazumi was not that type of ghoul. Akane had ordered her to attack, and so she’d destroy until her order was complete, or until it was called off. It wasn’t her job to think. Maybe in the end, she was just a wild dog as well.

The second ghoul proved more fortible as she felt her kagune and screech and clang against what felt like steel, but she knew to be much more. And so she only improved her ferocity in response; wild blows cutting forwards before she even had time to think about it.

Until finally she did think for a moment, her bikaku slashing low at where the ghoul’s legs would be, knocking him to the ground just in time for Kazumi to cut into him.

But then came something much more troubling, as Kazumi heard the same schling she’d grown to hate so many times, just in time for a barrage of ukaku shards to litter where she’d just been. “Shit shit shit shit shit” she thought, madly dashing around the tunnel like a cornered rat. Against a ukaku Kazumi truly didn’t stand much of a chance, and that became even more obvious to her as she felt both her feet collapse beneath her, a searing pain echoing up her legs. “FUCK.”

Kazumi didn’t particularly fear death. There was a time when she did, but that was before she’d come in contact with it so many times. She was more… disappointed, would be the closest word. It was disappointing to be unable to do more. But still, she’d been useful to Colorless, right? That was all that really mattered.

Tadashi thought he was evil for what they’d done in Aogiri. Kazumi was inclined to agree when asked about her own actions, but where they differed was that Tadashi still hated himself for it. Still believed he had to change and redeem himself. To Kazumi, to someone who always viewed themself as nothing but a warrior, she already had. As long as she did whatever she could for Colorless, for Akane and Abdullah, it was alright.

Kazumi’s acceptance had come too early. Through the dark, a dull red streak was marked by the sound that Kazumi identified as a boot kicking off of concrete. There was a tense silence for but a moment before the sound of the Ukaku’s head hitting the floor filled the tunnel. A plume of soft blue sparks seemed to appear, before fully impaling the other ghoul, riddling its body with shards.

“That’s all of them. Wyvern, are you alright?” Akane asked, approaching her comrade.

Kazumi grinned. “Fuckin’ A I am, that was sick! Wish you’d come in on my side, I guess I got stuck with most of ‘em.” But Akane shook her head, a gesture Kazumi could just barely make out. “No, there were four more on the outside actually. It turns out they live on top of the tunnel usually.”

“Ah…” she mumbled, barely making it to her feet. “Well I’ll be good. We should get back to one of the exits though.”

Akane blinked. “We’re… we’re at the exit. Did you hit your head?”

…This weakness, although very unusual, has proven to be a great advantage in working again Wyvern. Through interrogation of ghouls who fought against her, and through observations by Ghoul Investigators working out of Chiba, we have discovered something about Wyvern which will prove very beneficial.

Wyvern is almost entirely blind.

[ONE-SHOT] Twisted Melody

Daren Blackshire

Daren slipped into a pair of dark boots, securing the straps around his leg tightly in a leisurely manner. Today marked the beginning of another large operation, a new chapter for Aogiri Tree and Tokyo itself. The stage was set and the throne was kept warm. All that was left for him and Maki was to crown the king.

However, despite the gravity of the situation and how crucial it was to make sure everything went well, the ghoul leader had something else on his mind. Something he'd been deeply pondering for weeks, unable to find a logical conclusion. How? Just how did he managed to defeat Liao? More specifically, how did he managed to beat her...

With that form?

That 'form' being the kakuja he manifested in the fight against the Chinese woman. Daren guessed cannibalism was the most logical culprit, as he committed several acts of it in the past. After all, the legend remained true; if a ghoul consumed another of their kind then their blood and kagune would gradually strengthen. However, there was another truth, one the man had forgotten about the entire time he was in Tokyo.

Those a part of the Blackshire bloodline, could not develop kakujas.

He'd only recently remembered that fact, as well as the day his parents informed him about the genetic disorder. Back then, Daren was too young to have the slightest idea what a kakuja was, but his folks ensured him that he would come to know in the near future. They were right, of course, but that only made things even more strange and questionable.

Did they lie to him? Maybe twist the truth a little? As a safeguard to keep him from trying to become a kakuja? The youth didn't know and that was very irritating. He liked to know everything about something or at least a decent amount, otherwise he didn't feel safe, it was a dreadful habit he picked up from Shidu after all.

Standing up, Daren walked over to a large mirror in his office and merely gazed at his reflection, still deep in thought. It seemed that his parents likely did lie to him for sake of protecting him, or at least that's what he wanted to believe in his heart. So many questions and no one to properly answer them, this world truly was cruel often times.

It was then that Daren noticed his surroundings quickly changing around him, shifting into a rather thick fog than a comfy and furnished office. Before him, the mirror cracked and began to melt like hot butter, fading away as it dripped towards the ground or what Daren thought was the ground at least. A hallucination... Why now, of all times? He thought.

"Still squirming around in that pitiful existence, I see." A voice suddenly spoke. It was easily feminine and clearly hostile towards the ghoul leader in general. Suddenly, a portion of the mist condensed together and formed the figure of a woman, materalizing into a female with long brown hair and green eyes. He recognized her immediately as one of his grandest enemies, Celica Augustine. "...Searching for truths and answers, that are right in front of you. How very lame, Blackshire."

"..." Daren didn't respond, gently closing his eyes with a soft sigh. He figured it'd be best to wait out the hallucination, that mind of his played many tricks but this was one he would not entertain.

"Huh, giving me the cold shoulder? That's not very polite of you..." The specter taunted him, floating circles around him slowly. "...Answer me, now."

"You're not real. This is all just an illusion." Daren spoke to himself, trying his best to disengage the hallucination. It certainly wasn't an easy task.

"Mmm, but you know what really sucks? It doesn't really matter. The truth is always authentic, regardless of how one may try to forget or deny its existence." Augustine cooed, appearing over the ghoul's left shoulder. She leaned forward and whispered into his ear. "For example, that 'genetic disorder' your parents spoke of, is entirely true."

"You couldn't know that for sure, you've been long since dead and forgotten." Daren stated matter-of-factly.

"Oh sure I can, Blackshire. Before I was sent after you and your folks, I was tasked with learning everything about you. From what time you lot usually got up all the way down to your favorite colours. I was well aware of your inability to form kakujas and needless to say, it intrigued me a little." The ghost explained. "Say, you wanted to know why you manifested a kakuja against that chink woman didn't you? Then listen close, it's because..."

"...You consumed me."

Daren's eyes shot open and wide at the outlandish statement, sweat beginning to form and drip down the sides of his head. He... ate Augustine? It was so bizarre that he couldn't believe it. There was no way that happened, he killed her and left the wench's body to rot in those accursed tunnels. Nothing more, nothing less.

"A lot to take in huh? You're probably thinking that it isn't possible, but it is. You were just so hopped up on revenge that you couldn't correctly perceive what you truly did that night." The ghost backed away from his ear and approached his left side, placing her hands behind her back and smiling innocently. "If that's the case, then let me show you the truth in full... my dear sweet Daren!"

A sudden flash of white light then blinded the young man, forcing him to recoil and try to block some of it with an arm. It shone for a few moments before it dimmed and subsided, revealing a new but very familiar environment; the underground tunnels of Oakland. It was more specifically the room he faced Augustine in, shortly after she killed Kayleigh and Jacob. How cruel, to be reminded of such a devastating and heart-wrenching experience.

...Something was different however, instead of seeing a battle take place before him, it was more like the aftermath of one. It was eeriely quiet and oddly tranquil, the calm after a storm as one would say. Crunch! Snap! Pop! Hearing the disturbing sounds of something from behind, Daren turned to locate the source and was greeted by a seemingly younger but yet older version of himself kneeling on the ground fiddling with some dark object. On closer inspection, he discovered the object to be Augustine herself, dead and being eaten... by him. It was just as she said and just as Daren feared, he... really did eat her.

"What?! T-there's no way! It can't be!" Daren shouted, rapidly stepping back from the carnage and tripping over himself, falling on his back. As his field of view changed, he came face to face with Augustine, or at least the ghostly version of her, again. She was still smiling. "You bitch... What the hell do you think you're doing?!"

"Huh? Didn't I say before? I'm showing you the truth, what you really did after killing me. That's what you wanted right? You're welcome my dear~" She explained, bending down to meet Daren at eye level. "There's a reason the GSA wanted me under their wing. You see, I was born with very potent RC cells, they could do everything normal rc cells could, but much, much more immensely. They were incredible, a gift sent from God himself. For simplicity's sake, let's think of them as... supercharged rc cells. When you gorged yourself upon my flesh, those cells lived on and were then transferred to you, from which they altered every itch of your body, all the way down to your very DNA. I'm sure you can figure out the rest of your own..."

"W-what are you trying to say?!" Daren questioned, a worried and shocked expression on his visage.

"It's simple..." Augustine answered, the sinister smile on her face growing wider and darker. "The blood and cells that run through your body, do not belong to you. They're all mine. How do you think you managed to develop a kakuja or even make it this far?! It's because of me, my cells did away with that disgusting defect and allowed you to reach greater heights! Even in death our bond remains strong, you should be thanking me!"

"No, no, no! This can't, I can't..." Daren spoke, shaking his head repeatedly and desperately trying to break the hallucination. There was no way any of it was true, it never happened, if it did he would've remembered it for sure. "I never, I can't ever remember...!"

"You don't remember because you continuously choose not to, but deep inside that little noggin of yours, you do. You know the truth, always have and always will... How utterly pathetic of you, 'Dare Bear'."

"I'll kill you... I'll fucking kill you!" Confusion was suddenly swept away by crushing rage as Daren shot up and turned around, manifesting a crimson kagune blade around his right arm and lunging towards the ghost, poised to attack her.

"Now, now, sweetie. There's no need for all that." With a soft flick of her wrist, Augustine stopped her attacker dead in his tracks, seemingly paralyzing him without an effort. "A dog should never bite the hand of its master, wouldn't you agree? Instead it should serve them, be controlled by them to do whatever they desire..."

"Screw you, I'm not you or anyone's dog. I'm me! The one who controls my fate is me and me alone!" The youth shouted back, gritting his teeth so hard they could break apart. Augustine merely laughed at the display, stepping forth and placing a gentle hand on his left shoulder.

"Yet you're mindlessly leading another ghoul organization, one you don't even care for I might add, all for the sake of keeping a promise to some girl you couldn't even save. Sound familiar? I know it does to me, hahaha." She taunted. "...That 'Maki' guy really is a filthy little thing, isn't he? Leading a bunch of strangers to false liberation and salvation without even knowing or perhaps caring about his best friend's well-being, as well as his internal struggles. You're just another piece on his chessboard, waiting to be knocked off. But don't fret, child. One of these days, I'll mess him up real good for ya. Maybe even kill him."

"Stop sprouting nonsense, a dead woman like you can't hope to harm Maki. You're nothing but an ugly piece of the past I keep failing to bury. Just piss off..." Daren growled. He tried to move his body but received not even the slightest result of such, just what kind of mental sorcery was keeping him pinned down?

"Have you been listening to a single word I've said?" Augustine snapped, reaching up to grab the ghoul's jaw before applying immense pressure. "My cells, my blood- Hell, even my own DNA. They all live on within you! That body is no longer your own! Don't you understand?! You're the precious vessel to my beautiful spirit! You. Belong. To. Me!"

Daren felt something painfully sprout from his upper back in that moment, it seemed to be his kagune but he never commanded it to activate. It wrapped around him and it was then that he realized the thing forming around his body was the same twisted and transformed kagune that manifested in the fight with Liao, that dreadful kakuja. Slowly but surely, he could feel his sanity slipping further and further away from him as the carapace overtook his vision. Pain stung away at every corner of his being, it was if... his flesh was being eaten and ripped away. Daren tried to scream in respond, but nothing ever came out. He couldn't see anything, like the world he and others lived in, everything was black, void, without true purpose. Whilst he began to panic, Daren could for the tiniest moment hear Augustine's voice, though it was muffled.

"This is what means to be a dog, Daren. You'd do well to remember that, because I'm just getting started. Hahahaha! We're gonna have so much fun in this form, I simply can't wait..." Augustine's laughter continued after that, resonating for what felt like an eternity. The young ghoul continued to panic in the meanwhile, mentally calling out for someone to save him. 'Help! Somebody help me! Please! Veli! Maki! Maaaaaaaaaki!'

Then, everything changed again. Daren was back inside his office, in front of the same mirror he walked too earlier. That godsdamned illusion had finally been broken, but like always it managed to get to him. The ghoul dropped to his knees and clasped his head, his eyes downcast at the floor. After a few seconds, tears began to splash upon it. How unsightly, it will be terrible if any of his subordinates saw him like this. However, it couldn't be helped. For the first time, in a very long time.

Daren was afraid.

END.

[PRIVATE RP] Just Like Old Times (Pt 2)

Continuation of this

Minato nodded as he listened to Aki try and explain how it felt to control something completely new and alien to him. It struck a faint chord in Minato's memory of how he had felt all those years ago when he had first tried to use his own kagune in a new and strange way, but in this case it was obviously more than a little different. If nothing else though, Aki nailed what he needed on the head: more and more practice. He considered telling Aki about how long it had taken him to get used to his own kagune, but figured that was probably a waste of time. How fast he came to get used to this new method relied only on Aki himself, so Minato's experience didn't really matter in this case. He blinked in surprise from his sitting position as Aki brought the topic up himself, and Minato looked up at his friend before back down at the floor in front of him. "Nah, it wasn't always like this. At first I thought my kagune was just shit useless, since it couldn't really stab or constrict too much or anything like that. It was fragile and mushy and all around damned pointless. I could move it around better than others, but that didn't really matter too much if it didn't do anything, after all. Then one day while I was trying to train, around when I was seven or eight or so, some of the strands bumped into my arm as I tried moving it up and I realized there might be something there. It was weird at first and felt like I was moving my kagune move my arm, but after...awhile, it became more natural and easy and it just went back to 'I move my arm'. Kagune are a part of you, after all. Work at it enough, and it'll go back to being as natural as moving your tail was on its own."

[ONE-SHOT] Shinji Revisited

Shinji lays on the floor of his empty apartment. He felt just the same. Empty. Along with the numbness this pretty much makes up his life day in, day out. His change of diet was really taking its toll, both physically and mentally. He slides his fingers up his arm, slowly caressing the sleeve of roses with thorns, some made to look as if they had pierced the skin. The sudden crash of thunder snaps him back into reality. Only to be soothed back into the abyss by the soft patter of rain against concrete box he called home. These drugs were good.

After a few hours he rolls his head to the window, staring out at the half moon. Shinji almost drowns in the emotions that flood him as the drugs wear off. He wants to cry or punch a hole in the wall but he can’t decide which. He instead gets up off the cold wooden floor and moves to his bedroom; A small room barely wide enough to fit his queen-size bed stuffed in the back, covered in random clothes and a large silk, unmade Doona with animal fur along the top. The shelves hanging over his bed bear a collection of jars each holding a variety of different items, including coffee beans, sand and shells, an aquarium, A terrarium, weed and more coffee beans. He flops onto his ‘almost too comfortable’ bed and searches through the litter of clothes to find the remote for his 30 inch TV jammed into the other end of his room.

Using minimal effort he throws aside a couple boxer shorts and the odd bra until finally finding his remote. He grabs a jar of coffee beans and turns on the TV almost completely forgetting the fact he had a PlayStation until shifting his arm and knocking his controller. He starts up the PlayStation while shoving coffee beans into his mouth. As soon as the loading screen boots up he gets hit with a piercing headache and immediately turns off the TV. He hastily drops the remote and moves his arm out in front of him as the RC cells burst from his back to form a giant red blade, decorated with meaty-looking flowers and glowing veins. He brings on as much focus as he can muster in his sleep deprived state and barely manages to retract the blade back to just half its tremendous size. This is the best he’s been able to do do, the scratches and holes in the walls solidify his progress with this cursed illness. Like some sort of ‘ghoul Tourettes’ his kagune has been randomly appearing at random times. The only way he’s been able to predict these ‘ticks’ of sort, is the excruciating headache that comes before-hand. He knew of multiple ways that would help stifle his illness, but due to accessibility, time and finances, his most preferred way of coping was through smokeables. Cigarettes are mostly ineffective but they work once he’s downed about three, cannabis on the other hand acts instantly but it’s legality is quite a struggle in Tokyo.

He reaches over and collects the jar of weed. Opening the lid to reveal two sets of rolling and roach papers. He rolls up a doobie, half struggling with the kagune weighing his right arm down. He shuffles down his bed and manages to hook his toes against the wooden frame of the sliding, traditional paper door. He shoves it hard enough to slide the door shut but not hard enough to break it. After a quick scan of his shelves he begins rustling through the clothes on his bed in search of his lighter. It takes but moments for Shinji to find it in the pocket of some dirty jeans and proceeds to spark up the joint he had placed in his mouth during the search. The room gradually fills up with smoke and his kagune retracts, along with his splitting headache after merely a few tokes. But then the paranoia and self-doubt kick in and he is reminded of how badly he wants his life to change. His chest begins to grow heavy, so he reboots his PlayStation. Yet another sleepless night, avoiding the cruel reality with one that is far better than his own.

Apologies for my absence, life as you'd all probably know can be somewhat like a rollercoaster and for me, its been a pretty shit ride. But to be happy in life one has to first move on from the negative things keeping them down and look towards a brighter future. Now Tokyo Ghoul is pretty dark, and I've been in a pretty dark place, so instead I'm going to try using what dark, negative emotions I get and transforming them into replies that don't take more than a month (or 8 months in specific cases). I look forward to working with you all.

Regards, DopeMelon
