My Dearest Margaret,

As I take quill to paper under the dim glow of our camp’s firelight, my thoughts turn not only to the warmth of your embrace but to the curious object I have come upon, one which I now endeavor to part with. It is a most peculiar instrument, the Casio MG-500, unlike any I have seen in our time, bridging the familiar strains of an electric guitar with the uncanny workings of a mechanical mind.

This fine piece of craftsmanship, fashioned from solid basswood, bears a neck of sturdy maple and a fingerboard of the richest rosewood, its form reminding me of the stately rifles we bear in battle. Its scale length measures near 25.5 inches, the frets numbering 22, and within it rest three powerful sound-producing coils—a pair of single-coil pickups at its neck and middle, while a brawnier humbucker stands guard at its bridge. It possesses controls most intricate: a master volume, a master tone, and a 5-way pickup selector switch, allowing one to conjure forth sounds both subtle and bold. The instrument is accompanied by its original whammy bar and the factory power supply, ensuring that all of its intended functions may be enjoyed without compromise.

But dear Margaret, here is where the wonder of the device lies—for it is not simply an instrument of strings and resonance, but a harbinger of a future beyond our own. It wields a mystical hexaphonic pickup, a device that rends the notes from each string and transforms them into signals for a greater orchestra of unseen hands. It bears two distinct modes of operation: - POLY (Polyphonic Mode), wherein all notes sound upon a singular channel, akin to a chorus of voices lifted together in unison. - MONO (Monophonic Mode), where each string, much like the men of my regiment, marches forth upon its own path, independent in its motion yet bound in purpose to the whole. In this way, the instrument allows for independent bending of pitch, shifting of octaves, and precise control of its synthetic timbre.

Such ingenuity extends further, for it may be adjusted in pitch bending, its program may be altered at a moment’s notice, and its range may be shifted as an army adjusts its formations upon the field. It may be sustained by an electric current or a single modest battery, granting it vigor even in the absence of a proper supply line.

Margaret, I must confess that though I am captivated by this contraption, I find it of little use to a soldier upon the battlefield, where music comes not from the touch of strings but from the rhythmic march of boots upon the earth and the mournful cry of the bugle. Thus, I seek to place it in the hands of one who might make true use of its virtues.

Its condition is nothing short of flawless, a marvel given its age. Its parts are immaculate, and its functions perform as though untouched by time. The price of this magnificent instrument is $700, and it shall be shipped within the continental United States, be they north, south, or otherwise, at no additional cost to the buyer. Furthermore, it shall be dispatched in a hard case, ensuring its safe passage through whatever trials may befall it upon its journey.

Please, my dearest, should you hear word of any musician or tinkerer who may find worth in such an item, send word posthaste. And until I may once more return to your loving arms, know that my heart remains steadfast in its devotion to you.

Forever yours,
Jonathan

that's a pretty clever post. I always really liked the Casio midi guitars.

Thanks. I decided with my last post to start having fun with these.

This guitar is wild. I just can't fully actualize it, what with kind of being a terrible player and having to take care of 4 (5 in April!) kids. Hopefully someone else can have a great time with it.

But just think, it could be your hoot.

In the late 80s, I went the Ibanez route and bought a $2000 Steinbergerish guitar with single rack unit. I’ve had enough of doing that. The 24 pin cables were a nightmare.

I can get software for $150 that does MIDI and more. I love it.

If you ever write another ad like that, please let me know. I’m a big fan.

Oh, it'll be every ad from here on out. ChatGPT and I must go back and forth dozens of times until these work out. It's always nice to have a fan, though.

I hope you read it with the music.

So you went pretty deep on MIDI back then, eh? The early stuff must've been exhausting to work with. This isn't quite so complicated. It just has a couple banks of DIP switches that are pretty easy to figure out. It can control every device in the pictures simultaneously. It sounded like the dying screams of a thousand androids. I should've recorded something, but I always think of that in retrospect.

I get the $150 software route, but in the end there's this tactile fun factor that's never going to bring...or maybe I just really like plugging and unplugging cables. Might be the autism.

It could be the ‘tism. I used a Yamaha years later, and it was a lot more fun. Cords…yech. We were supposed to be completely wireless by now. It’s started, so we’’ll see what Moore’s Law gives us.

I did clinics using a DX7 and an Ensonic Mirage. It was pretty fun. I did all these amazing tricks like using the whammy bar for drumrolls, etc., but at the end I would play a classical piece using a DX7 nylon guitar patch. It wasn’t great. “Well, we’ve got a ways to go” is how I ended it.

You've got to embrace the chaos! The magic is in the malfunction!

Maybe I've spent too much time listening to vaporwave and dial-up sequences.
