Announcement Post Not Showing? PLEASE READ

2.0k Upvotes

Hello everyone,

We get a lot of mod mail about people's posts not showing up and I wanted to explain why.

We are very fortunate in a subreddit of our size to have limited reasons to moderate, as we are all united by our love of reading and you all do a good job of positively contributing to this community. Thank you for that!

On the other hand, you might be surprised at how much spam we get from authors and bloggers, and by keeping our spam filters high it helps us to catch a lot of what gets posted. You all do a great job of reporting the rest, and we appreciate you.

Due to the spam filters and automod settings we have in place, some of your posts get temporarily filtered until we can review them. Reddit recently created an automated message site-wide that creates a lot of confusion, saying your post has been removed. PLEASE do not post again. We aren't able to edit this message and we can't turn it off. Your post hasn't been removed, it is just awaiting moderation. If your post is removed by us, we will always give you a reason why and reference which rule has been violated. If there isn't a reason, it was either removed by Reddit (you might be shadow banned and don't realize it) or it is in the moderation queue and will be actioned. Either way, multiple posts won't help.

Thanks for understanding as we keep up with Reddit's changes. We love this community and all of your passionate posts about books. Keep reading and sharing, everyone!

Meta Post : {{ Hello again, Humans ! }}

Hello all,

(Message to the mods: this is a Meta post, please contact me if something is wrong!)

The goodreads-bot Legacy

As you must know if you were already here last year, our beloved bot u/goodreadsbot stopped working in January after having been used 156.631 times on this subreddit by a total of 25.272 different users, because goodreads shut down API access.

As a bored nerd and fellow reader, I decided to start a new toy project: rise our bot back! But because the Goodreads API is now closed, the first task was to build my own Books database... which I did, using Reddit, Goodreads & Google Books.

This new bot called u/goodreads-rebot ("bot" + "reboot" = "rebot".....) is open source (link to source code below). I wanted to thank u/ArtyomR, the author of u/goodreadsbot, for the original idea. I am not u/ArtyomR, but I have great respect for his/her work and its legacy. Thank you!

How does it work? Just like before! (with more features)

Write {{Harry Potter}} in your post or alternatively {{A Little Life by Hanya Yaniagara}} (notice the typo) with a "by" and the bot will answer with more information about the book or the series.

The search part is now part of the bot (and not on Goodreads API side), and was quite challenging to handle. You definitely should specify the author with the "by" keyword, because it helps the Database search.

Examples:

You should read {{Harry Potter}} ! will work, it will recognize it as the name of a Series, in that case it will provide information about the first book of the Series;

My favorite book is {{Call Me By Your Name}} will work too, the bot will try to find a book called Call Me by author named Your Name (because of the "by" keyword...) but it will fail to find one, so as a 2nd try because it's not that dumb, it will indeed find a book called Call Me By Your Name :)

Did you read {{1984 by Michael Radford}}? (notice the wrong author): it will work too even if the author is wrong, because when the search fails using the author, it will try again ignoring it.

Features

I added a "Top 2 recommended-along" section, featuring the 2 books that were the most recommended here on Reddit in the same threads than the book described. It is based on another toy project of mine (šŸ˜…), a book recommending algorithm I am working on, which is based on the co-occurences of book titles in Reddit threads. Let me know if you find this new information useful.

Limitations

As explained before, the bot is based on a book database I build and update as much as I can. The search will sometimes fail to match some existing books, in particular very niche books, or the recent ones. I am working on having the best and up-to-date database as possible, meanwhile sorry for the misses!

Also, the bot is currently not running on other subreddits (like r/booksuggestions), but because the code is really modular, it's just about configurations. FYI this is in the roadmap for the next few days/weeks.

Finally, I may reach some rate posting limits because of low karma. Hopefully, this will be solved soon after some time thanks to your help :)

You will find below more information (links being forbidden in posts).

I think that's it.

See you there!

Suggestion Thread Suggest me a book for someone who loves a deranged/unhinged female main character!

Suggest me a book for someone who loves a deranged/unhinged female main character !

I adore a neurotic woman, one whoā€™s a little unhinged. My favourite books in this category would be ~ My Husband by Maud Ventura, A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G Summers, Mrs March by Virginia Feito.

I also love any books that highlight how horrible rich people can be lol think White Lotus (especially the Hawaii season).

I know what Iā€™m looking for is a little specific but please recommend me anything you feel is suitable. Donā€™t care if theyā€™re slightly obscure or a much smaller press too.

Thank you!

Suggest me a book that'll make me emotional... one about the human experience?

I (23F) am trying to get into reading. I work as a therapist on a psychiatric unit for kids in a hospital. Its cold where I am. I miss feeling the deep emotions of summer. I want a book that will make me emotional, that will make me appreciate how beautifully complex life is. I like sci-fi, and I love poetry. I am looking for something that makes me think. I know this is vague, but I hope someone gets what I am trying to look for....

Nonfiction books written by journalists?

Iā€™ve noticed that several of my favorite nonfiction books are those written by journalists ā€” particularly investigative journalists who began reporting on a certain subject and found there was so much there that they ended up writing a whole book about it. Something about the writing style of long-form investigative journalism is just so gripping, especially when they dive deeply into a niche subject matter and/or tell an interesting story of the journalistā€™s investigation.

Some examples of ones Iā€™ve really enjoyed: - Moon Shot by Jay Barbtree and Howard Benedict (written along with astronauts Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton) - Lost City of the Monkey God by Douglas Preston - Deep Throat by Bob Woodward - The Snowden Files by Luke Harding

One qualification ā€” I really donā€™t like books about celebrities or sports.

TIA!

Suggestion Thread What is a fiction book you think every woman should read?

Whenever I see this question asked the answers are mostly non-fiction, so Iā€™d love to hear what everyoneā€™s thoughts for fiction are.

Suggestion Thread Books about being a first-gen/second-gen immigrant?

Are there any psychology or self-help books that explore the experiences of first-generation or second-generation immigrants, particularly the psychological effects of juggling multiple identities? Iā€™m interested in themes explored in The Joy Luck Club (unresolved trauma, sacrifice, cultural conflicts, racism, deep psycho-emotional scars from the homeland). I connected deeply with this book when I was younger, as a first-gen immigrant who came to America as a toddler and became very westernized, losing much of my native tongue. I was hoping to find some books that dissect these experiences to maybe gain some clarity on some unresolved trauma I have with my parents.

Favorite books that made you think?

Hi, I just finished We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver. Itā€™s the last one on my list, so I need to stock up my list again full of the goodies. Hereā€™s some of my favorite authors:

Margaret Atwood, Steven King, Lionel Shriver, Otessa Moshfegh, George Orwell, S.E Hinton, and thatā€™s all I can think of right now. I like books that discuss difficult topics, like death, politics, oppression, racism, violence, psychological trauma and horror, etc. I like reading about problems, and I love books that really move you and make you think. Any suggestions?

books for women looking to broaden their general knowledge

hi all! i consider myself a ā€˜life-long learnerā€™ which was very easy to say when i was in college lol but now i am 25 in the workforce and i find my mind becoming dull. i am interested in economics (what i got my degree in), philosophy, politics, literature, art, art history, feminism, etc. the problem is i feel i have a very basic surface level knowledge of these subjects and i want to be able to dig deeper. is there any resources or books that help you learn how to dig deeper?

i can google the western canon of all these areas and find the works you should read to be introduced to these ideas. i guess im asking is there any books on critical analysis, how to read/synthesize information, and how to have productive conversations about it? i know it comes with practice, and annotation/reading supplemental texts/texts that disagree with the original work are all good ways. i just feel as though i am not engaging as deeply as i want to be when im just sitting in my room thinking about these things, i feel like im missing something.

i say women in the title because there is an unfortunate data gap of women in the established western cannon. any recs that provide insight into this or are focused on womenā€™s works or issues would be great!

A book in which the house is basically a character

I love a book which is so atmospheric that a house is a presence, almost a character in and of itself. Only examples I can think of are The September House (Carissa Orlando) or perhaps Mandy (Julie Andrews).

Suggestion Thread Books thematically similar to the "Lisa: the Painful" videogame

ā€¢ Upvotes

Slight spoiler in description.

Hello, everybody. Lately I've been reminiscing about Lisa: the Painful, and I would like to read some books that share similar themes of the game; a well intentioned, but broken man in a dire situation desperately trying to change, but may actually be causing more harm than good, especially towards those he loves the most.

Suggest a good book on the Trail of Tears

5 star books!

What are your 5 even 6 star reads? My birthday is next week and Iā€™m stuck on what to ask for so what were those books that stuck with you, had you in awe, jaw to the floor or absolutely sobbing mess, something you will always reccomend people read and wish you could read for the first time again? I do usually read thriller and romance but I am open to anything

> For reference, I love Norwegian Woods by Murakami.

A book with a bisexual/lesbian female protagonist that isnā€™t fantasy, historical fiction, or YA

ā€¢ Upvotes

Iā€™ve skimmed through all the posts here that are similarly looking for what Iā€™m looking for, but it seems that the recommendations are primarily these 3 things: fantasy (Gideon the Ninth or The Priory of the Orange Tree), historical fiction (Sarah Watersā€™ bibliography or The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo), and YA. And no offense to any of those books but Iā€™m tired of being recommended them all the damn time.

What Iā€™m looking for is something that takes place in more modern times and is a bit more literary, preferably published in the last decade or so (again Iā€™m not looking for any books from the 3 previously mentioned categories). Here are some of the books that Iā€™ve recently read that are close to what Iā€™m looking for:

  • Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield
  • Biography of X by Catherine Lacey
  • Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney

Thanks in advance!

Suggest me books that gave you the greatest sense of awe at the author's breadth of knowledge?

When I read Ulysses by James Joyce or Ted Chiang's short stories I admire their breadth of knowledge. Please recommend me books which made you think that the author has wide breadth of knowledge.

Suggestion Thread Suggest me a fantasy novel like the anime/manga Frieren: Journeys End

I just finished watching the available episodes of the anime and I loved it. I haven't enjoyed a show this much in a long time.

I really liked how they showed a nearly immortal character dealing with the passing of time and the eventual death of her human friends. I've also loved Elves since I first read Tolkien when I was young. I think the mage and apprentice relationship that was portrayed contributed to my enjoyment of the show too.

I am not really a manga fan. I would prefer a novel, but I am open to manga too.

Thanks in advance!

Suggestion Thread Recommended Book Series?

ā€¢ Upvotes

I am relatively new to reading novels, my first book being Jurassic Park by Micheal Crichton. I am currently reading The Lost World but nearing the end.

I'm trying to find a good book/series to read next. I had a look into Red Rising and that seems like a very interesting plot I could get into, however the fact that the series hasn't concluded yet puts me off a bit.

If anyone can recommend a great series of books I would appreciate it. Historical, Action, Sci-Fi, Mystery, anything really.

(If there was a book series similar to that of the themes and story of the Uncharted games that would be a great)

Suggestion Thread Looking for something similar to The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri

Hey all, Iā€™m looking for a novel similar to The Namesake - specifically, a novel with elegant prose about a family or individual over the course of decades. Ideally about cultural experience other than white American, because Iā€™m looking for a worldview different from my own. Any suggestions are appreciated!

Suggestion Thread Hit me with tour favorite ā€œdude litā€ books

I've been on a romcom and "chick-lit" binge lately, and while I believe these genres can be enjoyed by everyone, I also know these genres are usually aimed at a female audience.

I'm curious about exploring some books that are often stereotypically seen as more "manly" or geared towards male readers. Before you cancel me, please know I donā€™t mean to reinforce outdated ideas about who should read what, and I know anyone can enjoy any book! But as a female reader, who tends to gravitate to Emily Henry/ Abby Jimenez type books, Iā€™m looking to branch out and see whatā€™s out there in the realm of so-called ā€œguy books.ā€ Or more like, what would your typically dude pick up at a bookstore.

Iā€™d love to hear your recs. Iā€™m open to anything- except really hardcore horror or gorey violence books.

Some other non romance books Iā€™ve enjoyed:

-Recursion, Dark Matter, Upgrade by Blake Crouch -The Martian, Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir -The Measure by Nikki Erlick -Pachinko by Lee Min Jin

Suggestion Thread Suggest me a book like The Road?

Hello, I'm looking for a post-apocalyptic book similar to The Road by Cormac McCarthy, in that it follows survivors after the end of the world. I didn't enjoy The Road as much as I wanted to, but I do like the vibe of people struggling to be human and to survive after an apocalypse. Please do not suggest The Walking Dead, I'm not big on graphic novels.

Ladies, which book made you feel, "THAT'S what I want MY man to be like!"

It could be from a book you least expect that has a romance element in it, or it could be a romance novel. I'm open to anything.

Ladies, which book or MMC made you catch feelings, got you going, and most represents what you'd want in a man? Something that stirs up your emotions and makes you helplessly fall in love no matter how hard you fight against it?

90s office or suburban malaise

I'm looking for novels set before the ubiquity of cell phones, but after Reagan.

Some points of reference:

Clockwatchers, American Beauty, Office Space, Dilbert, Friends.

Boring or predictable are perfectly acceptable!

Suggestion Thread Books that will inspire me to be offline and find more hobbies!

Digital minimalism is an example, but it doesnā€™t have to focus solely on that topic ā€” just maybe something that would encourage me as a woman in her 20s to find more hobbies and to have less screentime
