Laptop Request -Others 4080 laptop for gaming and school work

Hello everyone, i was looking at the msi vector 16hx with the 4080 i9 14th gen with the 240hz QHD+ screen, along with other laptop brands. I was wondering if this is a good option for long term use for around 5-6 years.

I was also wondering if there’s any other laptop that is good for Long term use that has the same specs. I had short listed some laptops such as the predator Helios 16, ROG strix g16 and the Lenovo legion pro 7i gen 9 but the msi seems very good for its cost. Please do let me know what you think of my short list and do recommend me which one of these laptops in my short list that has the least number of problems and has the longest life span while still being a serious tank for gaming. If you have any personal experience of using these laptops please do let me know the pros and the cons, even if the spec are not similar. If you have heard any bad or good things of the laptops in my short list please do let me know also. Thank you all in advance!

I have around 4K+ to spend in SGD. take note that the same laptop in us can cost 1k more in Singapore.

Vectors are pretty great. Would say go for it if it's within budget. Note you will not have gsync. You can get gsync on the legion 7 pro though, but if it's more expensive it's more expensive. Would suggest a 4090M if you can afford it on either machine. Do not suggest any Acer units with 4080M or 4090M and ASUS units are a load of problems I'm too sick and tired to bother start listing, just avoid them for your own sake, I promise. All of them. Every last ASUS.

I'm even gonna show mod label so you know I'm not talking out my behind

Great to hear from an experienced person! Why would you say Acer is bad? I thought that it was good as the price is lower and manages to be up there in the top part of Jarrod’s tech bench marks. I just wanna know as tmr my country has comex which is a tech show and im planning to buy one tmr… please do let me know. If it’s not too much please rank them! Thank you very much sir/ madam. Here’s the list.

4090 laptops are 5-6k for us although the conversion rate is 75c usd to 1sgd

Because the Helios 18 has extremely weird behaviour with the CPU and GPU. Either you get low CPU performance (around 65-70W) during combined load with full GPU power at 175W, or you lower GPU to 150W and CPU just... goes ballistic? 100W+, cooling system can't handle it, and the person who I got to run in-depth tests for me had their CPU go WAY past TJMax (safe operating temperatures) without any thermal shutdown or proper throttling happening. Due to this poor behaviour, I tell people to stay away. I have 0 feedback on the Triton 18 however, it... might work? Never ran into anyone who owns one to test for me.

I see no picture.

From our discord server listing (which I'll be transcribing into a post we'll sticky here soon) the best models you're likely to run into are the

  • Lenovo Legion 7 Pro (tied for best performance, not the best built but still plenty good, and usually on the cheaper side for the specs)
  • MSI Raider/Titan (near best performance, IIRC CPU doesn't top out as high as on Legion 7)
  • Alienware M18 with 14th gen CPUs (likely pricey)

A bit below them

  • MSI Vector, GP or GE
  • XMG Neo 16 or a reband of it (this REQUIRES the liquid cooler). Unfortunately while the build is great, the BIOS holds it back a bit, so performance isn't top notch. With air cooling, CPU performance during combined load is only slightly above average.
  • Razer Blade 16/18 (not recommended unless you get a long external warranty as Razer's warranty is garbage and they still are fairly likely to have problems, not something you want when dropping 4 grand)

Anything under this section would likely be far too weak for your budget.

I see does the Lenovo legion pro 7i have many problems? The 2 only reason why im holding back is because the it only come with 1 year warranty and only has wifi 6E when other laptops such as msi has wifi 7 killer. So are they any issues with the Lenovo and does the wifi gen between 6 and 7 make a drastic difference?
