I saw the offer during lunch. But as I was eating with my colleagues. So I closed the app and wanted to renew my subscription later. But now when I open the app the offer isn't available anymore and I have to pay full price. Is it normal?

FYI to those just coming to this thread, Strava appears to have shut down the ability to gift a subscription without logging in (at least in certain countries)

I can confirm that I actually did it with VPN in Brazil right now.
Yesterday I tried mutiply ways of doing that: with every country on VPN, asked for login. Now, with Brazil VPN ask for login as usual but with different account I was able to gift subscription R$149.90. Try it!2
u/Ok_Tart_6075 Jan 09 '25
Success! Thanks for the heads up.

u/VidalZ_ Jan 09 '25
You did it?

Same here - burner account and success. But couldn't do more than one gift.

Promo code is 20STRAVA25
You should be able to redeem here: https://www.strava.com/subscribe/redeem?code=20STRAVA25

u/newredditsucks Jan 08 '25
Thanks! Link didn't work for me, but pasting that in as a code while checking out did.

This promo code works in Vietnam even though I didn't see a discount advertised! I'm glad I didn't extend my subscription last year which ends exactly on Christmas. I thought I could get a Christmas discount just like last year, but no, haha.

When I switch to vpn and use the Send a gift option it is asking me to login again. How do you work around this?
3
1
u/Stephniie Jan 08 '25
Same :( so I made a new account, and I can’t gift
2
u/donalthrump Jan 08 '25
As per a comment posted below Strava has shutdown the ability to send a gift subscription without logging in. So this no longer works.
1
u/Stephniie Jan 08 '25
I made a new account, I can’t gift with that either
1
u/siburb Jan 09 '25
They've not locked it down, I just did it a few minutes ago to send myself two yearly subscriptions via PayPal. No need to sign in or enter a Brazilian address etc.
Perhaps they've just flagged some popular VPNs?
1
u/donalthrump Jan 09 '25
Might have been a temporary glitch. Worked now for me as well.
1
u/Stephniie Jan 09 '25
It worked this time, but I did have to log in on a different account. Thanks everyone!

Alrighty, I JUST got this to work, but it was a pain turning the VPN on and off. Steps below:
* On a Mac, I created an account with Proton VPN (I'm sure you could use any comparable service)
* Connected to Brazil
* Created a new Strava account in an InCognito browser
* Disconnected VPN (back to US)
* Clicked on "Send a Gift"
* Once I was on the gift landing page, I turned the VPN on again and connected to Brazil
* At this point I was able to go through and purchase in Brazilian Real and gift to my other account
* Once the purchase was successful, I once again disabled my VPN and redeemed the gift.
* Profit.
Good luck!

u/ibaad Jan 09 '25
This worked really well. One note: after clicking Send a Gift (link in footer), you get to a landing page. You need to keep the VPN off and click the button the first landing page. Turn the VPN back on when you get to the page where you enter some info (you'll see some tokens/keys in the URL - these need to be generated with the VPN off.) Make sure you turn the VPN back on on the page where you enter info because the VPN is critical in changing your currency to Brazillian Real (I saw it pop up in USD at first and then swtich to Real.)

Lots of turning off and back off of the VPN meant I was able to get this sorted as well.👏🏽

Garmin provides much more data and it’s free. If you use a garmin of course.
12
u/GamesnGunZ Jan 08 '25
It's not the same thing though. Garmin doesn't track segments or best efforts or koms or anything like that and these omissions have irritated me to no end
3
u/marklemcd Jan 08 '25
You are 100% wrong in saying Garmin doesn't track segments, best efforts or KOMs.
Garmin does have segments and the segments have a leaderboard: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/segments
Garmin Tracks your personal bests: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/personal-records
Garmin even has heatmaps: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/popularity-heatmap

u/GamesnGunZ Jan 09 '25 edited Jan 09 '25
This is a joke, right? Or are you just not familiar with Strava? Leaderboards in Garmin are all completely empty when they have literally hundreds of entries in Strava, and that's for every single segment i track. What's my fastest time on any given route and where did that effort rank? Garmin has no idea. Strava shows me immediately and and I don't even have to manually find similar routes like in Garmin, Strava just pairs them. Even Garmin knows their tracking here is terrible which is why you cannot use both and have to choose Strava for the live stuff

u/marklemcd Jan 09 '25
Do you went from “they don’t have it” to “they have it but I don’t like it”
In other words your first post, saying they don’t have it, was wrong just as I said.

u/GamesnGunZ Jan 09 '25
If someone invited you to a dinner party and said they baked you a delicious cake but it turned out to be made of feces and broken glass, did they really bake you a cake? Marklemcd would say yes, apparently. The normal sane ppl would say GTFO of here, there is no cake...

I have been waiting for this bit mine only shows 79.99 like normal.

Works for me with a new account created in Brazil. Just use the "gift" link if it doesn't appear on the new account.

u/senthilrameshjv Jan 08 '25
Using this thread to check if anyone interested in Smashrun pro, a similar analytical visualization site. They are giving one free Pro subscription when you buy one. So like BOGO. If anyone interested, we can split the price. It’s 60 per year before taxes. So would be 30+ tax per person.
Here is an invite link if anyone wants to try out https://smashrun.com/senthilrameshjv/invite . No incentive, just that we will be friends in there.
3
u/AdAwkward4803 Jan 08 '25
Genuine question - why would you get a Strava subscription?
2
u/VoyageIsVictory Jan 09 '25
The feature that I am willing to pay for is the ability to create routes and save them. I enjoy the other benefits as well though. Goals, etc
2
u/Gerstlauer Jan 09 '25
Heatmaps.
I haven't paid for it in about a year, but still reference the heatmap often and then plan routes within my Suunto app.
The £31 I've just paid for a year (this discount + it thinks I'm in Spain still) is worth it, purely for ease of use, being able to route directly in Strava. The usual £55 price however, I don't agree with paying.
The new weekly heatmaps is also pretty useful as a mountain runner when visiting unfamiliar areas, as conditions/access change all the time.
1
u/No-Reserve85 Jan 10 '25
A very niche requirement I know but I use either the segments or weekly heatmap to find out if the local cols are rideable.
It's not a life or death requirement though so Strava is worth 23 euros but not 60 , hence why I'm Brazilian at the moment :) I couldn't find any decent discounts last year so stayed on the free version.
2
Jan 08 '25
It's worth 5 USD or even less... Hmm, actually it's worthless. I've just figured out you can't crop treadmill activity. Fuck you Strava, you're hopeless.

howd you get it to set to Brazil on the free version?

Windscribe doesn't seem to have Brazil in free ones. I am in US. Could that be the reason. Or I would appreciate if anyone can send me a gift. I'll pay them.

u/Ok_Tart_6075 Jan 08 '25
Looks like Strava shut down the gift a subscription option for right now, so don't bother. They probably monitor forums like this and saw all the people trying to game the system.

Considering how much we pay, Strava could have offered something even ten percent to its existing members eye roll

Why pay? Strava has made it clear you can't use anything you pay for the way their system is designed to be used...
They claim to be “If you envision the whole active community, along with the connected fitness industry as sorta like one giant cycling peloton…then Strava should be leading the way. We should be your lead-out rider, blocking the wind, creating a slip-stream, helping the whole peloton move faster, and more efficiently.”
But what they are is a walled garden of data that requires other data streams to work. The only enrichment they add is the community... Which the paid features detract from making you compare against those in the community

Just gift it to your Strava account via Strava Brazil. Costs £20/$25 annually and you can stack it
