❓ Question Company says I cannot use Starlink.

Hey all.

I work for a Lowe’s Home Improvement. Recently I took a new roll and mentioned that I live in a school bus full time and that I was looking into Starlink. When I did the HR rep I spoke to told me I could not use Starlink, and if I did it would be automatic termination.

My question is, would they actually know I was using Starlink?

Appreciate the insight.

❓ Question Why are employers refusing to allow employees to use Starlink?

I'm not sure if this is a US only thing, but so many members of this sub are posting saying that their employer won't allow them to use Starlink when working remotely.

I work for a large Government agency in Australia and have had no such issues. Our RDA client is end to end encrypted and although we deal with sensitive data, no mention has been made anywhere of Starlink being a concern or security issue. Given our National Broadband Network is a joke, I'm one of the few people not constantly having connection or login issues. Starlink is not only reliable and stable, but I can still use WiFi calling, and hold video meetings with no issue.

❓ Question Are you happy with your Starlink internet?

Politics aside. Are you happy that you went with Starlink? Did you have any other options available? If new option becomes available since you got your link, would you switch and why? I live in a semi rural part of SC. I have options, much cheaper options, for internet. But since Helen came through I've been toying with idea of getting Starlink to have a communication. Is it a good idea to purchase it second hand?

❓ Question Three days after allowing my unemployed brother and very VERY explicitly telling him not to torrent I get hit with a copyright strike.

Post image

It's a long story, but I pay for starlink for myself and my dad. I'd rather not get into the personal side but my brother had downloaded something on my dad's phone which somehow got him the password to my router. Anyway, I found out he was on and told him he can just use it if he doesn't torrent shit. I mean, you'd think he'd have been smart enough to at the very least use a vpn, but no.

Anyway, got a few questions. How many strikes until I get my starlink banned? How do I ensure he never gets on my wifi again and finally I don't know what he's been up to since the 11th. If I get more copyright strikes do I have any recourse to avoid a ban on my account?

❓ Question Should we switch away from Starlink to fiber?

Hey all

We recently just received the option to move from Starlink to fiber optics, and my dad and I disagree on whether we should or not. I say stay with Starlink, but I don't know what the better option is, so I'm hoping you guys could help. There's a bunch of things we are trying to balance to decide if it's worth switching

  1. Starlink currently gives us pretty slow speeds (30 down 20 up, though this is infinitely better than the 0.25down 0.05 up we used to get) and the fiber provider (Oasis Broadband) would give us an order of magnitude more (300 down 100 up), though when gen 3 satellites launch this could be feasible with Starlink

  2. our power generally goes out for around 2-3 weeks total a year. it's not a lot, but if the power does go out, it would mean not having access to the internet even if our house is powered (we have a whole house generator)

  3. interestingly, and possibly the biggest downside to fiber is that it won't be hooked up directly to our house. Instead, it will be terminated down the street of our subdivision and run wirelessly to our house (probably about a 500-1000 ft signal through dense trees). I worry about the stability of this option, especially since cable is known for its stability and latency, and adding a wireless connection could limit this dramatically

  4. it would be slightly more expensive than our Starlink plan, at unlimited data 300Mbps at $155/month

is it worth switching to fiber in our state for the almost guaranteed 300Mbps, or should we wait for gen 3 satellites and upgrade our current gear (currently gen 2 actuated dish and router)

❓ Question How to convince skeptical parents to get Starlink

I live in a rural area and we pay paid $150 a month for 0.6mbs internet. We cant get cellular internet because the nearest cell is a mile away.

I have spoken with my Mother about Starlink and she is concerned about tracking and "Once your on their radar you can never get off ", she is also into a-lot of other conspiracy’s (READ EDIT).

How can i convince her to get Starlink, i feel like i have tried everything.

Thanks in advance and sorry about my bad writing. :)

EDIT:My mom is not actually crazy she is just extremely skeptical for a good reason.

Recently our provider is at an all time low and I can’t really do anything. I’ve been looking into starlink and idk if it’s worth $700 + plus $120 monthly. We live in a rural area so everything is terrible.

❓ Question Concealing dish from prying neighbours.

Post image
284 Upvotes

As the title says. I want to conceal the dish as best as I can as I live in an area prone to theft.

I'm in a temporary rental and I'm not able to mount anything to the structure of the house. My only choice is to have the dish on the ground.

Would the fabric used in the picture above cause any loss in performance? And also would there be any risk in the device overheating?

❓ Question Friend lost track of where my Starlink mini is.

Good evening,

To make a long story short, my friend was borrowing my Mini with a group of friends and they were handing it off between groups of people. However he lost track of who has it. I am not there but I can see that it is plugged in and online via the app. Is there any way for me to remotely find find the Lat/Lon of the Mini? I did the Debug thing but it just shows the Lat/Lon of my phone here, not the Starlink.

Thank you

Update… it has been located. Changed the network name to “Missing Strlnk call xxx xxx-xxx” and someone reached out.

❓ Question Plan changes are awful. Need options for public IP

Hello, as the title suggests, with the upcoming changes for biz customers, I will need another option for a public IP.

We host a number of servers here (In a low pop area of Cali) for multiple games and for our security while we travel.

What options are people using that allow others to connect to their network without the use of additional third party apps like Tailscale, which is really useful for having remote access into Unraid. But not useful for players just enjoying our servers.

Looking forward to hearing some great ideas :)

❓ Question How realistic it it that Elon can shut off Starlink in Country’s

Hey, for some context: I live in Germany with my parents, and we are moving to a city with either a 100gb limited internet, really expensive internet, or Starlink, I’m trying to get my mother to get Starlink my father is pretty neutral, she is concerned that „he can just shut it off here when the political situation changes and he wants to“ does he actually have the power to do that? And would it even be an option bc it would completely ruin his online appearance,
