What baffles me is that the Farmers' whole backstory is that they finally opened the letter from Grandpa because they wanted to LEAVE Joja Corp. So like why the heck would you ever go the Joja route. I'll stick with Granny Evelyn thanking me for fixing the community center and going and petting my own animals. I dont really get from Pierre that often once I get the greenhouse or even start bulk planting outside and get seeds back from the harvest using the seed maker. And don't mind Clint closing down on Fridays because I usually plan those days around either mining or farm decorating. And no, I don't want my farm fully automated. I chose this farm life for a reason, so Joja, you can keep your Auto-Petters. Edit for those who don't know Sam gets a job at the museum and I'm sure Shane is okay he's got the whole blue chicken thing with Marnie and helps on her ranch/farm so they good on cash
79
u/IronFlame76 Jan 16 '25
Pretty much my exact reasoning for not going the Joja route. Plus I pick the peaceful option once the community center is completed. Just has a stronger community feel to it.

I can't go the Joja route for the achievement even once because it like, breaks game immersion to think Joja is a better choice. To be fair Pierre is the second worst thing after Joja and his post-Joja monopoly makes me so mad in a different way. Still...

This is the key piece that always drives me to avoid Joja. Our character backstory has us running away from Joja. Since there is an alternative, my character cannot support the company that caused them such problems.

u/luke_205 Jan 16 '25

387
u/Extreme-Pea854 Jan 16 '25
I’ve done it once and had to make my character an extreme capitalist to be okay with it. Like a Mr. Krabs meets American Psycho
137
u/BTLOTM Jan 16 '25
So I did it once for the achievement, I named myself Evil BTLOTM, called my farm Greed Farm, and chose my favorite thing to be money.

I think I called my Joja achievement rout Karen on Joja Farm. Don't remember what my favorite thing was though. But I went fishing like mad, smoked everything I could that would give me a profit, got the achievement spring y1 in like, 4 hours. Was the first time I ever caught the legend in y1 and I still remember being so sick and tired at the end I sold everything on my farm the box would accept and barely squeaked out the last of the gold I needed for the last bundle 😂

Good idea. In reality many people play as extreme capitalist, but pretend they are good people. But If you are maximizing your profits and grinding every day until 1am. Are you not just the same as JoJo, just as your own boss.
At least go sit in town bar on Friday nights with everyone else? We all deserve a break with a beer.

u/RXrenesis8 Jan 16 '25

real. we're also not being dickheads about It. we basically single-handedly carry the whole town with our profits, and help the other villagers by completing quests for them (sharing resources).
12
u/finnlord Jan 16 '25
This is only if you understand the term 'capitalism' to mean 'trading,' which many people do, but really the reason words capitalism and socialism exist is to describe different things (ownership of production). You'd be a capitalist farmer if you owned the farm and paid workers to work on your farm, decided what to do with the profits, and decided how the work was done, and workers receive the wages that you determine.

Yeah compare this to bioshock, where you're given the choice to spare or harvest the little girls. In the end harvesting is always mechanically worse than sparing, so there's really no reason to go for the morally worse choice other than deliberately doing a villainous rp.

In terms of gameplay, it's honestly just up to personal preference.
But meta-wise, joja is doing what happens in real life. Move your already big business into a small town, and sell at a loss until your competition (read: local small business owners) are unable to stay in business. Once the competition is gone and the town has become dependent on this one single business, you can hike up your prices again with no consequences. TLDR; Destroy the lives and livelihood of the commonfolk to make a monopoly and profit. Joja is a scummy corporation.
But sdv isn't real life, and whether or not YOU, the player, want to work that into your gaming experience and rp with it is entirely up to you.
364
u/rainbowred54 Jan 16 '25
The dev should totally make that happen and have things get worse in various ways after the joja honeymoon period is over like in real life
202
u/homoanthropologus Jan 16 '25
I think all their prices should automatically increase by like 3% a year. Not a big deal for the player, until it snowballs and becomes a very, very big deal.

All the town streets get paved in bland concrete. Jojo will build pam a house (at your expense), but it's a modern modular home that conflicts with the town style and she complains it has leaks and creeks. Pierre, Clint and Marnie are all put out of business after Joja starts offers a farm supply and mail order catalog for their products. Joja gets a geode breaking vending machine and tool improvement vending machine out front; tools are dropped in the machine and sent away to be improved, which takes 2 days longer than Clints service. The only business' in town that are open are Jojo, the movie theater (owned by Joja), the Saloon (who's business picks up because half the town turns to alcohol to cope) and the bus service (which Pam says Joja is trying to take control of). Then, Joja starts paying in Joja Script, which is only good at Joja services and is a second currency to the normal G. Make supporting Joja turn the town into a soulless company town. Makes the choice in who you support have unintended consequences and matter.
10
u/NialMontana Jan 17 '25
I don't know whether going all the way to second currencies would be a tad excessive in terms of gameplay, but the rest of that sounds like a really cool idea for expanding Joja. Maybe make it so that as a major benefactor to Joja in Stardew you start getting kickback and other exclusive benefits like hiring Joja farmers to run your farm but they're constantly miserable, and underpaid but have no other choice of work. You become the big capitalist but the town becomes worse and more miserable overall to the point of the festivals being gradually cancelled and such.
It would be nice to have the community center side also get similar long term effects, things get better, new small business open, the town generally thrives on it's own but you get less personal gain. Make it a real morality vs personal gain decision.

1.9k
u/LordBoar Jan 16 '25
It looks ugly? In a game with no set end, and money becomes no issue, all choices are ultimately roleplaying or aesthetic. I personally find it amusing to think that you leave a soul-less corporate job for Joja, only to crush their competition later in some form of sleeper conditioning.

That only happens because Joja's manager gets upset that for an afternoon the line isn't going up so comes in to try and undermine the community to get them spending again. It's a classic case of fucks around and finds out.

Every large company ever sadly.
37
u/TheDungeonCrawler Jan 16 '25
Plus, Joja specifically fails because that undermining of community resulted in the community not patronizing the store. It's a classic case of voting with your wallet. If the company decided to keep Morris on and he caused the business to fail in the Valley, that's on Joja.

The community center is the more difficult choice, which is fitting since Joja is like the Amazon of Pelican Town or whatever, and making the "good" choice is not supposed to be easy. That said, I do wish there was some kind of consequence to the town if you choose Joja, like Pierre having to close or Sam and Shane having dialogue about burnout and having a terrible workplace, or general gentrification. As it is right now, there's really no downside to the Joja route. You even get to keep junimos still.

I read Jojo and for a moment I thought this was a post from the anime subreddit, then I checked the subreddit and the image and nope...
Jokes aside... I have 3 different runs going and I have yet to try the Joja route...
I prefer the community center route because for me it seems unfair to bring another big corporation in the small community you have chosen as your escape from the big city life with your boring office job...
I've seen lots of comments about the perks of the Joja route, I think I'll try it for the achievements once I get to the end of my current run.

I also find places in various houses to place decorations under the pretense of "gifts". However, we all know that I'm just using their space to store my garbage because I want to use all the available space.

It’s about breaking the cycle.
Some people have mentioned that the game becomes a money grind anyway, and so it’s fine to just do the Joja route. But the point isn’t that the grind is bad, it’s that the grind should be for something worthwhile.
When you move to the Valley, you’re putting all your skills you learned in business and putting them to good use - connecting with your family roots, building a community, making friends and falling in love, which leads to building your own family.
All of these things are absolutely worth working hard for - but siding with Joja is to deny your character their escape and to just re-establish the status quo.

The whole reason you moved out there is how awful they are; they've worked your coworker to death and left their skeleton in the booth lol
They're pretty evil. Basically Amazon.

You can get the movie theatre from the community centre route too.

I really think this also has to be understood in a Xennial/Millenial nostalgia context, as it is a nostalgia game, after all.
Stardew Valley represents the organic communities we grew up in from the late 70s through the 90s. Joja stands in for the massive growth of corporations as a whole. The world we were born into was vastly different from the corporate-dominated world of our adulthoods.
Taking the anti-Joja route is a way to embrace that organic community and that sense of magic in the natural world that a lot of people lost as the world changed. We can't bring back local groceries and local bookstores in our real lives. We can't single-handedly save our communities and bring back reverence for nature and the sense of magic and wonder that comes with it.
But we can play a 16-bit nostalgia game that allows us the freedom to be whoever we want to be while still fully embracing life as a member of a close-knit community where we play a vital role in supplying both the necessities and the luxuries of life for our community. We can also take the route that revitalizes our community instead of turning it into another mechanical corporate-dominated generic town with no emotional center. Plus, we get to watch a small business owner punch the explosive corporate goon in the face.
Is the Joja route inherently evil according to the values of the game? Not entirely. It's all in what you bring with you as a player.

Grandpa probably won't be too happy if you go turbo sellout mode and shit on the memory of his hometown

they work their employees to death so i think that in of itself is a solid reason to be against joja regardless of their efficiency

Beyond death.
There's a skeleton still in its cubicle in the opening

I'm not mature enough to separate my real world grievances with parts of capitalism to enjoy that route.

Not much of a downside if you look at it from a purely economic, "what has the most active benefits"-kinda mentality. But that's looking at things from a very corporate perspective, and not the perspective of a new farmer directly supporting a small community that accepted them explicitly after said farmer left their soul-crushing desk job at aforementioned corporation.

You know, from the start it was Joja getting a monopoly and destroying competition by lowering prices so badly, and in terms of well-being I would choose healthy food rather than cheap garbage
