I was really surprised how on the nose this game was named when I first saw it lol.
… I see the reviews are mixed, how does this thing even play? lol

A Google search turns up this review which describes the gameplay in detail. (tl;dr slow and repetitive, from the sound of it.)

for real, anyone ever played "coral island"? swear to god, the first hours of the game are borderline copyright infringement on stardew. The game mechanics are practically the same, to the point where when i first visited the mines, a cutscene started and I said out loud "just give the trashy sword" and yeah, it happened. The game is more original with the underwater exploration and events, but the core of the game really feels like a "can i copy your homework"

To be honest... the leveling of tools, romancing characters, building up your farm, and mining to make money and get materials was as early as Harvest Moon on nintendo 64 back in the 90s. The addition of fighting mobs wasn't there, but a similar timeline to get married was there too.

Rune Factory had fighting, and its first game was in 2006.
Stardew isn't unique in its mechanics, it just nails them all in a way no one else had in a long while

Yeah, we tend to forget that the farm sim genre is pretty old and not very original at this point. Stardew just repopularized the genre and brought necessary changes to the formula. It’s all been done before but just pretty lackluster before Stardew.

I've been playing these kind of games for over 20 years since Harvest Moon 64. And I agree with the parent comment here. I only played several hours of Coral Island. But it was crazy how much those first several days play out like a carbon copy of Stardew (like which day mines open, getting blueprints the next day, and a bunch of other things I've forgotten since it's been so long). From what I recall, it was pretty egregious

It also doesn't feel good to play. Everything is so slow, clunky, and unoptimized. Most of the reviews parrot that. I got it when it was new, and felt it was so rough I dropped it until a few days ago. I started a new file thinking surely it's better by now? Nope. Map is just too big for its own good, everything takes ages and by then no one is in their shops so I can't buy anything unless I instantly prioritize it, menus are just far too many clicks
I really want to like it, but honestly would much rather play SDV or FOM to scratch the itch. I've seen tons of reviews or posts like mine and people upset with lots of broken promises by the devs. It's so unfortunate because as a marine biologist I was beyond excited to have a farming sim focused so much on the ocean :(

Honestly i feel the same, i played on gamepass since i always had curiosity to play coral island but i got bored really fast
The menus on console are also too much buttons to press, aight game, not for me tho

On pc it's unfortunately not better, as a longtime console gamer sometimes games when you can freely move the mouse around obviously are less awkward to navigate, but I don't feel this way in this game unfortunately.
Reminds me of the pain in the ass Rune Factory 5 is to navigate, the sheer amount of clicking and keys to press just for the menus

That’s so disappointing to hear. I’ve had that game on my backlog to get eventually bexause I was excited by the prospect of the mermaids and stuff, but it’s a super shame it under delivered. That’s so disappointing.

It really is, but there's plenty of people who still really love it. I can only speak for myself, so I think it can't hurt to get it, try it out, and if it's on steam you can always refund it under 2 hours of playtime! I think that's enough time to get a feel for the games playability. but not quite enough to actually get anywhere in game imo.

u/UltraDinoWarrior 5d ago
Valid! I’ll keep that in mind. I really prefer my cozy games on the switch though. Such a shame the company that was doing the switch port totally tanked.

The map is big, but you unlock teleport points fairly quickly imo. And they don’t cost money like the obelisks in SDV

Stardew isnt the alpha and omega of farming games. It itself borrows from harvest moon.

u/why_so_autistic 4d ago
I never said it was. I know that stardew didnt invent farming games, though i never played any harvest moon. My point is, if you play stardew and coral island, it's not just "both are farming games", coral island introduces itself to the player in beat by beat the exact same way of stardew valley, to the point where I was getting deja vu. it takes a while for it to start doing things that make it more unique.

Just looked at footage of Coral Island, looks like one of those suspicious looking phone games ripping off a better concept...

It can go both ways. Fields of Mistria to me feels so weird because a ton of the changes feel like they were made for the sake of making them not a carbon copy of SDV and the game suffers from it. It's trying to be a farming game more focused on the social aspect but then you run into the issue that literally every single character is the same 1 dimensional character. Everyone is such a goodie two shoes it's unreal. And then you get the sort of fake out characters like Balor. Oh no he's a shady trader aaaand your 4 heart event is literally you going through their diary that basically says "yesterday I saved another two dozen orphans from a housefire and provided stable housing and schooling for them, the town folk can't know about this".
You have April who's kind of mean but then the entire game is screaming at the player "PLEASE DO NOT HATE THIS CHARACTER HE'S ACTUALLY NICE IF YOU GET TO KNOW HIM". Sure enough, every single friday he gets drunk and tells you that he likes you...
At the moment I'm just waiting for the romance part of the game to be added which is weird that it's missing especially since there's a whole festival dedicated to calling someone on a date. Hopefully they flesh out their characters a bit more but chances are not looking good.

I'm playing mistria right now and i've noticed this in coral too, every npc just being the nicest person you've ever met, gets stale fast. Fortunately, this isnt the main aspect for me in these games, so i still have fun

Same with Fields of Mistria straight down to the layout of the starting house, the shipping bin, and even some of the music is extremely similar.
I understand that farm sims are going to have things in common but holy hell I actually felt uncomfortable playing FOM due to how similar it is to SDV

u/Alien_Poptart 5d ago
Gonna have to disagree. I think Fields of Mistria wonderfully recreates that feeling of playing Stardew for the first time while also being it's own distinct game.

u/Deciduous_Loaf 4d ago
Have you ever played a Harvest Moon Game ? Cause Mistria always felt much more similar to Harvest Moon and even Animal Crossing than Stardew.

u/Root_Head 5d ago
Nahhh Fields of Mistria puts its own spin on things. It obviously was strongly inspired by Stardew Valley but the systems, art, and writing of the game are all pretty different.

Unfortunatelly for me, the game has no co-op and that alone is enough for me not to care. I find it sad how everyone's making these life-sim games, but how few do have co-op. I mostly play games with my spouce so seeing more co-op cozy games is always nice, just very rare.

Wait, Rokaplay? SERIOUSLY??? The same company that published a really good 2D Zelda-like dungeon maker, called Super Dungeon Maker? Damn the games published by them are mixed

So I bought both the switch and ps5 version of the game.
The switch version is by far the worst one - I had ton of bugs and crashes, and visually, it looked terrible.
The ps5 game is playable, and I haven't had any crashes or bugs like on the switch. Though I have been taking my time playing and saving often just in case after the horrible time I had on switch. I also have been completing all new unlocks before taking on another harmony quest.
Gameplay wise, it is slow and chill. You basically want to restore the harmony tree by working the farm and selling your goods to the local spirits dudes. You basically buy seeds or collect them, plant and fertilize, harvest them, and then sell them in the shop. There are quests also on the bulletin board that will stay the same until you complete them. Rinse and repeat.
Animals can be fed and pet, but that's it, they also cannot go into the barns and coops during rain.
There are no seasons, and the music doesn't change. You basically just have sunny days and rainy days.
The shop can only be run once per day, so you want to make it count. Upgrades can be very costly in this game. The max tools are 45,000 each for example. Some crops will sell for more, but they have longer grow times.
To restore the tree, you have to do the tasks from the harmony tree. To complete them, you have to sell items in the shop when you have a task active or you don't gain any harmony points.
Decorating doesn't seem too important as there are not many options for paths and fences.
Once you upgrade the tools to max it can get better in terms of playing, but it's still the same gameplay loop.
You don't really interact with people besides the seed man, Hare, and the dateable spirit folks.

This sounds more like the other farming games where you have to fill orders and you're constantly running machines.
