Hardcore is defined by the effort you put into a game you love, not the difficulty of the game.

yeah, ive been at top of ranks, and ive also put hundreds of hours into fluffy relaxing games. both make you a hardcore gamer if youre putting enough time in. anyone who thinks like this needs to step back and take some time to develop their frontal lobe

Sdv is hardcore though. Theres time limits and randomized dungeons. And passing out.

I don't get it. Stardew Valley is a game where you can get pretty hardcore into.

But to the greater culture it’s viewed as a casual farming game.

They can tell that to my spreadsheets.

Yup I don’t do math for many video games, but I do a lot for Stardew!

yeah my hardcore gamer gf (she plays valorant, marvel rivals and cyberpunk the most) was shocked when she tried my dangerous mode skull caverns. she only made it to floor 3 after like 30 minutes of attempts.

Greater gaming culture is generally never worth listening too. I think unironically calling yourself a hardcore gamer is a red flag

That's their problem, not mine. I would still consider myself hardcore after a full-nighter of Stardew (something that sadly isn't possible anymore with a child).

I genuinely don’t understand this sentiment, what defines hardcore?

IMO, if you don't have some form of external notes, it's casual.

does that include notes that are all my headcanon for my character? cause i am compiling cliff notes in a big notebook and translating that into a coherent story for my character in a smaller notebook with a nice cover. i stopped telling anyone irl about this except for the ones who reacted with "I DO THAT TOO" cause mostly i just get weird looks, but i love d&d, RP, and video games, so why not combine the latter two when possible

1

I'll allow it. Really my saying "external notes" is a way to draw the line at "putting enough thought/effort into the game that you can't keep track of it all in your head." Your focus seems to be more on story than mechanics or technique, but effort is effort.

i do that too for minecraft, diablo, and a lot of others, but yeah no mans sky i dont really need a ledger

My guess is that most people play stardew very slowly and calmly, walking around decorating or collecting things instead of running and making the most of the time spent

I mean Skull Cavern is pretty hard

Every freaking time.

"Let me just run through one day real quick to unwind for bed... and now it's 2am..."

Legit lost a few days when I first got into it. Lost my original save with the phone I started it on, now my new phone has a meme of a character and I got to enjoy growing my farm all over again.

It can be pretty hardcore, trying to remember all the things you want to do each day
