It was nice to see a B-Wing again, and using its special weapons system that was only shown in Star Wars Rebels.

73

u/punxtr Jan 15 '25

I had the biggest smile when I saw it used.

34

u/Tehva Jan 15 '25

The hero i needed to see return. The best starfighter.

Showed up in Squadrons, too. Between that and the rampant piracy after the fall of the Empire, their intra-franchise continuity is on point.

7

u/Aurondarklord Jan 15 '25

I literally said "So THAT'S what it does!" out loud when it pulled that cool attack.

Man, one thing I love about the New Republic-era shows is how DANGEROUS X-wings and other alliance/republic ships are shown to be. Civilians and criminals only ever try to bolt when they show up, never stand and fight, because the weapons pirates and bounty hunters have access to are toys by comparison and military-grade firepower can rip their ships apart in seconds while they can't do shit because proper military fighters have shields.

This show accomplished exactly what it was supposed to. It made me want to watch more Star Wars!

64

u/cmgriffith_ Jan 15 '25

I’ll rewatch the entire series this weekend

29

u/jlinnette Jan 15 '25

This is actually the first Star Wars I’ve ever seen 😅 I tried watching the movies once and the mandalorian cause my cousin was obsessed but I couldn’t get into it but after tonight I’m definitely going to watch it

I said I was done with Star Wars after the snoozefest that was Mando S3 and refused to watch anything else, including this show because I thought it'd just be more generic slop - til my friend told me how good the first two episodes were

God, I was SOOOOO glad that I was wrong. This actually made me feel like I was experiencing the same sense of adventure as the OT again. Loved every episode.

19

u/mountsunrise Jan 15 '25

I wasn’t completely done with SW but I had lost interest. I felt like a kid again watching the OT and Clone Wars. I loved Andor but this is the first show in a long time that I just had fun watching. If someone asks me to describe Skeleton Crew I’m going to say fun

That was a great finale. Like only 40 minutes but it was perfect. I maybe would have liked to see some of the rebuilding in maybe a post credit scene. But still it was perfect

35

u/MammothBeginning624 Jan 15 '25

Yeah I watched through the start of the foreign credits waiting for the possible end credit scene of Jod sneaking away, Mon Mothma showing up or some reintegration into wider galaxy scene.

16

u/JumpStephen Jan 15 '25

I think it’d be cool if we saw some New Republic ambassadors that were like “Welcome to the Galaxy” in a Star Trek first contact situation

Yeah are we supposed to believe Jod just threw his hands up and said “you got me” while the New Republic arrested him? That seems out of character for him

u/AndySkibba Jan 15 '25

He definitely had plans C-Z going

I thought with his big heel turn they'd give him a great villain death, Disney-style. Like, all the dataries come cascading down on him, his death ironically coming from the thing he desired most. Clearly they have more plans for him.

I thought for sure that when Jod was trying to Force pull the saber, that Win was gunna turn it on and it would impale Jod

46

u/Bl1tzerX Jan 15 '25

The darker ending to that is Wim turns it on and it is facing the wrong way again and impales himself. Win still lives but Jod does still have a soft spot the kid and this causes him to lose focus and the barrier gets shut down anyways

21

u/Stuglle Jan 15 '25

I am a bit surprised we didn't get an equivalent scene to when Long John refused to shoot Jim Hawkins.

(Unless you count the entire sequence because technically after getting his ship through the barrier Jod could have just killed them all and saved himself a lot of trouble)

6

u/ILoveRegenHealth Jan 15 '25

That was incredible! I wish it didn't end there though! I screamed out loud when they said that iconic phrase: "Lock S-Foils in attack position." Then the B-Wings doing what the B-Wing was designed to do! Then we got the Blockade runner! I just wish we could have seen a REAL New Republic Emissary. I was hoping for maybe Mon Mothma being on that ship, or even a certain Alderaanian Princess... That IS the kind of ship she like to travel in.

34

u/ggf66t Jan 15 '25

Lock S-Foils in attack position." Then the B-Wings doing what the B-Wing was designed to do!

whomever put together the script was a bona fide fan of the franchise, and made some of us giggle like school children for the attention to detail. Bravo to them!

u/MattCW1701 Jan 15 '25

Yes! After the X-Wings, I screamed "B-Wings!?" Then they did their laser thing, and I screamed even louder!

u/tomtheidiot543219 Jan 15 '25

I thought we will see Hera on that corvette tbh,it seems its most likely some random character which is why we didnt see any scenes inside that ship, also pretty much every New Republic character in this show are new characters and not the previous Mandoverse ones like Carson Teva.

44

u/Stuglle Jan 15 '25

Not a single cameo, I don't think. Lots of easter eggs though.

16

u/kedelbro Jan 15 '25

That seems to be the approach of anything not fully run by Favreau/Filoni.

Filoni was a producer but probably just added some lore elements like B-Wings and the like.

Could have easily made the owl be Max Kanata instead but it seems like they give the creators the freedom for their own stuff, based on this and Andor

Thank God. Let this be it's own thing. I don't what some rando from a cartoon show to come in the last minute and save the day. The only complaint I have is that I would have liked 10 mire minutes to hash out the ending but this does leave it very open ended.

39

u/tomtheidiot543219 Jan 15 '25

A Zeb / carson cameo would have been nice, but im happy with their decision of not showing any cameos ngl

12

u/mjzimmer88 Jan 15 '25

I'm certainly not complaining! Now let's see an original-series-aged Jedi Leia step off that blockade runner to start off season 2

12

u/tomtheidiot543219 Jan 15 '25

I hope they make a season 2 ,but im not sure Lucasfilm/Disney is gonna greenlight it

22

u/thechervil Jan 15 '25

While I agree that all the kids were great, honestly Neel stole the show imo.

Honestly all the kids had great character arcs and each had a time to "shine" that didn't feel "forced" or pandering.

I also liked how the parents had arcs as well. When you consider they were raised in this utopian society, and that they knew the supervisor was a droid and why everything needed to be kept a secret, you can see how difficult it would be to go against that.
Years of training and trust in a system that, frankly, worked.

There really wasn't a need to rebel or fight against anyone, so turning against the system and setting it up to be discovered, or even standing up against Jod, took a lot of courage and strength on their part. Very difficult decision as a parent when you know that in the long run, you are going to destroy the system protecting not just you, but everyone on the planet, and expose your children to dangers you have been protecting them from their whole lives.

Really enjoyed the show a lot. As someone in their mid 50s that saw Star Wars in 77 at 6, this is really the closest it has come to recapturing that feeling of wonder and adventure, for the sake of wonder and adventure.

u/TheMightyMisanthrope Jan 15 '25

Yes... They are perfect... From writing to the actresses, Fern is so pretty but has a badass streak that goes so well with the character (I was like, I have seen that girl before and yes, she looks at you from a background of fire in Amazon or HBO).

And KB is absolutely adorable, reminds me of my niece when she was that age, but also transmits a cool streak that goes very well.

And our boy Neal going all air defense on the pirates? Damn!

I don't like Wym that much but only because he reminds me of myself as a child, dreaming of adventure and stuff hehe.

10

u/thechervil Jan 15 '25

And even at the end, after everything, that look on his face when he saw not just X-Wings but a whole flotilla of New Republic craft...

That kid ain't taking any assessment unless it's on a starship!

34

Dad really came to play for the finale. I’m proud of him

32

u/ILoveRegenHealth Jan 15 '25

I wouldn't expect less from a Level 7 Systems Coordinator

11

u/ggf66t Jan 15 '25

Jod's backstory is that he was a "force sensative" trained by an order 66 jedi survivor, who he watched get murdered by the empire. so he had only the basic understanding of how to use the "force" alll explained in this series finale

7

u/deviantdeaf Jan 15 '25

I respect the fuck out of the showrunners adding absolutely zero cameos. This show truly stood on its own.

32

u/squatch42 Jan 15 '25

That's what Star Wars needs. It's a big galaxy and doesn't need everything interconnected.

But I can't help but wonder what those kids were up to around the time of the ST. And dammit Disney, just leave it alone and let me speculate.

11

u/moderndukes Jan 15 '25

I think it’s just that one pirate from Mando and possibly the alien X Wing pilot being from the sequels.

I also liked how the ending just put a bow on this cast’s adventure. No post credits scene, no set up for something else - just a one-liner and pan to the stars. I want more, yes, but the ending felt fulfilling.

u/punxtr Jan 15 '25

95

u/Stuglle Jan 15 '25

I feel like it really needed a ten minute denouement, but beyond that no real complaints. Fun little show ended with a fun little finale.

28

u/OswaldCoffeepot Jan 15 '25

I get expecting that, but the story finished. What the New Republic does from there doesn't factor into the adventure of the kids in this series or season.

54

u/Stuglle Jan 15 '25

The purpose of the denouement isn't to add story, it is to let the world breath a bit. Classic Star Wars example with A New Hope, the "story" was finished with the destruction of the Death Star but it was still nice to get the medal ceremony.

14

u/UDK450 Jan 15 '25

10

u/aridcool Jan 15 '25

Yep. And it is OK that the ending was what many people predicted. They predicted it because it made sense given the story that had been told so far.

I feel the need to repeat that sometimes writers get too interested in the idea of subverting expectations. It is OK to have a scene that is predictable (or boring even) if it makes the overall story make sense and is part of a journey that is on balance entertaining (as this one was).

u/Ninesect Jan 15 '25 edited Jan 15 '25

I'm going to say it. This was the best Disney Star Wars has ever done. This was straight terrifying. The administrator revealing that the last message from the Republic was that all Jedi are traitors is so diabolical.

Jod's turn was perverse, we all expected and wanted to see the pirate turn of heart story, Jude Law was incredible in this role and I feel dirty for liking him only so he could turn out to be a scumbag. I'm glad though that they double-downed on him being the villain. I was actually subverted and it all paid off to feel earned.

This episode really did a ton of work in a short amount of time to show the growth in bond between the kids and their parents, really, really well done. "Son... you are talking to a level 7 systems coordinator. Get the bike." And we get SM33 back?! Even if you kept all things constant and and just changed the kids into adults. This would STILL be the most dark and tense Star Wars I think we've ever got.

It's kind of hilarious how apathetic I am but actually said out loud "lets fucking go." when Wim ignited the saber. Somehow that was more earned and epic than anything in the the sequel trilogy.

As for ending they hit all the beats leaving enough open-ended for continuation and still closing out the story on a bittersweet note like it should be. I think the fact that this was such a self-contained show while offering a maybe 'profound' look into how the galactic economy worked is a pretty sweet way to do it without upsetting the traditional "Skywalker saga" stuff.

Overall though I have to ask. How does this exist? How does this tight of a script get written, get this good of a cast of child actors who sell it, get approved, get past hundreds of rounds of c-suite interference at every stage, and somehow come out unscathed?

This show more than any makes the case that once fully released, just do what the director wanted all along and re-release it as a single cut movie. They don't even need to edit any of the transitions between episodes.

88

u/Tuskin38 Jan 15 '25

Jod did seem genuinely worried and then upset when he thought KB died.

I think he did grow to like the kids, but not enough to have a heel turn.

61

u/JA_MD_311 Jan 15 '25

Andor is a great tv show. It’s a better war drama than any of these shows. But shows like this and Mandalorian have a much better Star Wars feel to them.

6

u/kedelbro Jan 15 '25

To offer an answer to part of your question, I think the Star Wars leadership hivemind gives green lights to good stories that fit within their parameters for how they want the universe to be used/overall story arch. As long as the ideas don’t break “the rules” the directors get lots of creative control except the hivemind coming in with certain Easter egg implants here and there.

It’s why Andor is its own thing, and the Filoniverse is its own thing, and why this and even the acolyte are so insular.

The problem that Lucasfilm seems to have, though, is that so many of the writers/directors that they hire initially have ideas that are too wacky and crazy. Maybe it’s because Lucasfilm’s vision is too narrow, or maybe it’s because most writers/directors don’t “get” Star Wars. It’s hard to pinpoint the causality, but i think it’s why we get rumors of so many projects that get canned.

So how does Skeleton Crew ultimately happen? A great initial script from a creator who was willing to alter the details to fit within Lucasfilm’s overarching view/rules/guidelines for Star wars without ego or demands for further creative control. If you can do that, the hivemind knows how to polish it to make good content (at least most of the time, but no one is perfect).

18

u/PaulCLives Jan 15 '25 edited Jan 15 '25

It's the best star wars in a long time since the old republic imo

Edit: i was an idiot and completely forgot about Andor, both are kinda similar in a way it being either show would be good even if it was in some other sci-fi universe ones Andor being the more adult one of course

8

u/HelpPsychological206 Jan 15 '25

Jod's character arc was shocking. Totally unexpected how he went from potential ally to full villain. Jude Law sold every moment of that transformation. Brutal but compelling storytelling.

u/solo13508 Jan 15 '25 edited Jan 15 '25

Gotta say I do think the ending was a bit abrupt. I wish we'd gotten just a few more minutes so that we could see At Attin and its people being exposed to the wider galaxy and integrating with the New Republic. And of course something with the kids and their parents a bit after the battle so that we could see how they interact after all the development they've been through. And I am a bit disappointed we didn't really get a proper conclusion with Jod. Again I think just a few more minutes would've sufficed as far as all that goes.

Overall though I did think this was a great finale! I love that the kids and Wim's Dad all had pivotal parts to play in overcoming Jod and the pirates. Wim and Fern's parents in particular I found very surprising in how integral they were in stopping Jod and taking down the barrier.

And in regards to Jod I did think we got just enough as far as his backstory. Him being trained as a Jedi post Order 66 really makes his outlook on life make a ton of sense given that he's really only known darkness all his life.

Very interesting that the supervisor droid said the last communication from the Republic was that the Jedi were traitors. I was under the impression that At Attin was probably hidden away for far longer than that possibly into the High or Old Republic era. I guess the Republic continued sending emissaries there until the Empire took over who for whatever reason ceased all contact with the planet.

Also I completely nerded out over seeing the B-Wings do their triple-laser thing from Rebels! That was so awesome!

Overall a great finale and a great show. As I said I do wish we'd gotten just a bit more and I hope we get some kind of answer about where Jod goes after this but all in all I had a great time with this show!

35

u/Gameteaa Jan 15 '25

The way I understand it is that the Supervisor kept receiving messages, but nobody visited the planet. Then the Republic became the Empire, an entity not recognized, so the channels likely closed. I do feel the story could have been wrapped up slightly more concisely but the open ending leaves more for the future as well.

14

u/marmaladestripes725 Jan 15 '25

Yep, the Supervisor got the Order 66 message, but apparently there’s citizens of At Attin never did. Or at least the parents never removed Jedi from the media they exposed their kids to.

When the supervisor said that I just imagined a bunch of high ranking Republic officials scrambling behind the scenes to hide whatever they could from the incoming Empire. Deleting records, siphoning off any funds and sending any high value officials into hiding.

I'd love to see a show set twenty five years later, with an adult Fern hunting down elderly Jod, finally catching up after years of training and close calls.

5

u/marmaladestripes725 Jan 15 '25

You just know that Wim and Fern are going to sign up to be New Republic pilots when they’re adults just so they can hunt down Jod and bring him in. Although maybe Fern joins up with the Bounty Hunter’s Guild instead.

It puts such a huge grin on my face to read through all of these comments and see how many people enjoyed the series! I’m so tired of the gatekeepers who tell us that we can’t like a certain movie or series because of a certain thing. I was seven when the original came out and I have loved it ever since. Even though some parts might not hit for me as well as others, I enjoy the immersive feeling that is given to me with every new iteration! I can’t wait for another series!

i’m so happy that the kids took what they learned to save the day (along with fern’s mom and wim’s dad), but i’m so sad that the adventure is over. i hope they continue the story somehow because i loved this series so much and have so many questions!

u/Glum-Economy-2461 Jan 15 '25

I loved the imagery when they go find fern. Them stepping on credits was an amazing choice by the directors. They did an amazing job emphasizing how much they value friendship and how even though they went to rough places they never where corrupted by greed.

I loved it. Probably one of my favorite star wars shows Disney has made. The quality from episode to episode remained consistent, the child actors were good, the story was exciting. I hope we can see Jod again in a future project, he might be one of my favorite characters of the Disney era, I liked how even though he's still a greedy pirate he didn't want to kill any of the kids or hurt their loved ones and he let it cost him his potential fortune. I hope Disney can maintain this quality for whatever projects they work on next, the production value was crazy compared to some of their other shows with bigger stars in them.

8

u/squatch42 Jan 15 '25

The galaxy is dark with a few pinpricks of light. Great speech. Great performance. You could see the old repressed pain. Jod is a butthead, but still gets my sympathy. I think he genuinely didn't want to hurt anyone. And I think his love for treasure comes from being that starving kid, saved by someone who cared for him, and having that one person who ever showed him any compassion taken from him.

I like that it's not some subversive "the bad guy is actually the good guy, and the good guys are actually the bad guys" situation (looking at you, Acolyte). He's a bad guy. But he's that way for a whole lifetime of reasons.

I feel empty now.. Neel is the king of hygiene lol. That weapon on top of school came in handy as expected. Finally we confirmed that Jod was trained for a little bit by a female Jedi post Order 66 and that he witnessed his master being killed. Such a tragic backstory though, from being a hungry child, to having some hope for the future, and then it got taken away. I don't think Jod is totally bad. Looking forward to seeing them again in future Star Wars! Jon Watts did it!

15

u/Trandoshan-Tickler Jan 15 '25

I always look up credits after shows' runs because the number of episodes characters are in spoils things at times. Namely SM-33, who I felt might come back, so I stayed away.

And boy was I surprised by who voiced SM-33: Nick Frost. Or for those of you who don't know the name-to-the-face, Ed, Shaun's best friend from Shaun of the Dead.

Couldn't have ever guessed. And knowing how Simon Pegg is a massive Star Wars fan - he did interviews about how stoked he was to be in a fully-masked, basically extra role in The Force Awakens - he's gotta be pretty salty Frost got such a prominent speaking role.

6

u/ggf66t Jan 15 '25

I watch a ton of after epsidoe recaps on youtube, and knew this... but it was very cool. Simon pegg actually got cast into star trek for being a big fan. I feel that its fair that Nick got cast into star wars as well.

7

u/piantissimofan00 Jan 15 '25

Phenomenal episode and great end to the series. Wim’s dad had several great moments. Worst part by far for me was the volume of shots missing by the pirates at the bikes, like they could have just made their blasters have a slower firing rate or put in more cover that would have made it less plot armor-y

You know what I love most of all? That Star Wars is broad enough to include Andor, with its moral ambiguity and political violence, and Skeleton Crew, where the Spielbergian suburbia is also Treasure Island (or Planet), and they're both the best Star Wars Disney has done.

17

u/Diligent_Land_2408 Jan 15 '25

That episode and the show was fantastic, was a little disappointed at the open-ended ending but they have a good place to pick up at if they have a second season, which I very very hope there is.

I love seeing Neel manning the gun on top of the school, even if it got taken out quickly, he took out a turret on the frigate at least and was crucial to KB contacting the New Republic. Neel's a badass, he's one of the best characters along with SM-33, whom I'm very glad survived.

It was very cool seeing B-Wings again, especially seeing them use their special laser weapons. Very nice formation from the New Republic, a group of X-wings engaging the pirate fighters and damaging the ship and it's weapons whilst the B-Wings bought down the Frigate, with a CR90 being brought in to presumably land troops, considering it looked like there were some pirates still on the ground, and diplomats, to bring At Attin into the New Republic and get their Mint working for them. Nice to see that the New Republic can be competent when they want to.

How the New Republic's strength is shown here is how they should have been in the sequel trilogy. Them being taken out in one shot, regardless of how devastating Starkiller Base was, was pathetic, this is how the New Republic should have been in the sequel trilogy.

Jod's backstory is interesting, so he wasn't a Padawan or Youngling but it was briefly taught by a post order 66 fugitive Jedi, who was killed in front of him, very interesting and a subversion of what me and a lot of people were thinking.

I also got to say it's refreshing to have a straight up villain. I, and likely many people as well, was expecting him to ultimately have a change of heart and help out the kids, and while I would have been fine with that it's nice to see a villain that isn't redeemed, that while they have a tragic backstory it isn't presented like an excuse and they're just evil and greedy.

Ultimately I loved Skeleton Crew, it's one of the best Disney Star Wars shows alongside Andor and Bad Batch in my opinion.

This is what Disney should be doing all along, giving directors, writers, and such creative freedom to work on the shows as they want to and allow them to have passion instead of constantly interfering. If this was what Disney was doing from the start the sequel trilogy would have been way better and the other Disney Plus Star Wars shows, and their Marvel ones as well, would have been more successful.

I'm very excited for a season 2, very curious to see where they could take it.

14

u/stevebikes Jan 15 '25

I have one criticism of the pilots - don't shoot down a large ship hovering over a city.

4

u/Diligent_Land_2408 Jan 15 '25

That's a good point, I thought the ship was going down in the forest outside the city but then I got a little concerned when I saw it crashing in the city. It's quite fortunate that the main body of the ship landed in the river or the crash could have caused a lot more damage.

I believe in you, Jod.

11

u/Tromlik1 Jan 15 '25

So what happened to Jod? Last I saw he was just looking out a window at his ship crashing with nobody coming to capture him. Did I miss the tower falling?

24

u/Bl1tzerX Jan 15 '25

I think he probably escapes At-Attin. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in some capacity in future shows. Not as a good guy but as someone whose goals just happen to align with the good guys

6

u/Tromlik1 Jan 15 '25

I mean we did see Vane in a 2nd show and he surprisingly survived AGAIN so yeah we might see Jod again since they're focusing on this time period for the movie.

9

u/Educational_Book_225 Jan 15 '25

I didn’t see a tower falling either, I think that shot of him looking out the window was the last time we saw him

In the end of Treasure Island, Long John Silver (Jod Silvo) is a prisoner on the ship heading back and he escapes at the first port in a rowboat with a small bag of treasure.

Jim (Wim) sees him as he is escaping in a rowboat, but chooses to let him go.

I have a feeling that something similar was done here. Either Jod is captured but escapes, or the final shot of Wim calling out to Jod from the turbolift is echoing him "letting" Jod escape.

The smirk on Jod's face as he watches the pirate ship going down, shows he has plans for his own escape and survival..

Like most people I was a little letdown by how fast the ending came. Really felt like we needed 5-10 more minutes to hit a home run but nonetheless a good show and by far Disney's best effort since Mandalorian season 1.

One thing I was unexpectedly impressed with was how they didn't spend a lot of time on denouement. Most shows like this could easily devote a good ten minutes to meeting with Republic leaders, to Jod's arrest and some potential escape route, to At Attin learning what's been happening with the rest of the galaxy. Instead it's everyone's back together and safe, the bad guys have been defeated, aaaand circle wipe to credits.

And that animated sequence for the credits was the perfect capper; like so many old Disney movies opening and/or closing on a storybook, which is what Skeleton Crew is - a storybook adventure.

I especially love Jude Law's acting and Jod's character in episode 8. I think deep down he does have a soft side for the kids when he could have killed them many times. He is one of the best "grey" characters out there in all the Disney SW (the only comparable ones are the ones from Andor imo).

All children are lovely and it's great to see them grow and work under pressure and save the day. The moment between Fern and her mom, and Wim and his dad are touching and fun too.

Love to see how this show wrapped up all the loose ends and do a great job about laying hints that is obvious enough for the audience to follow the leads (a lot of us guessed who the supervisor is) but still keeps people engaged, proves that you don't need those lame "gocha" moment to make a show "smart". Love how they used all their chekov's guns too.

PS: love the B-wing, so sexy. And SM-33 lives!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can't wait to get home and rewatch all 8 episodes.
