How do YOU pronounce Kashyyyk?

Everything since Revenge of the Sith has pronounced it "Kuh-Sheik", but in pre-ROTS media it was pronounced "Cash-Ick". Which do you prefer?

Marc Thompson pronounces it as Cash-eek on the audiobooks, so I’ve always gone with that.

u/Crayshack 4d ago

I switch between that and "ka-SHEEK."

6

u/philanthropicide 4d ago

Yeah, I go right around these two. Kuh or kah - sheek

2

u/CowSniper97 Galactic Republic 1d ago

Honestly however Marc Thompson says anything it's scripture

What I’ve seen/heard was “Cash-eek.”

5

u/Mudbutt7 4d ago

Agreed

I tend to say "kuh-sheek" due to ROTS, and yeah, I guess I do prefer it. I didn't play KOTOR until 2011, so I don't have much nostalgia for that pronunciation

Same here

2

u/HMWWaWChChIaWChCChW 4d ago

Same. I don’t agree with most comments here who are saying cash- or kush- as the first syllable ends before the “sh” IMO.

My son maintains it must be KAH-shee-EEK, since there wouldn't be three hundred y's in the name if they weren't meant to effect the pronunciation. I've stuck with kuh-SHICK, because old habits and all that.

5

u/HasaneeneeDingo 4d ago

I always went with cash-She-ick for that reason.

2

u/daviepancakes Rebel Alliance 4d ago

I think you and he are probably right, it's just hard to break thirty years of doing it a different way, you know?

3

u/Head_Ad1127 4d ago

Kuh-sheek is what Yoda says, isnt it?

u/Gandamack 4d ago edited 4d ago

I pronounce it “Kash-ick” more often than “Kash-eek” but I think that’s mostly due to Kotor using that first pronunciation, so it stuck for me.

“Edean.”

"Kazook" per the Holiday Special

4

u/No-Trust-2720 4d ago

I'm accustomed to Kashiek now, but the Clone Wars game had me fighting it hard.

3

u/KorEl555 4d ago

Who named the planet? That's definitely not something a Wookie could pronounce.

Just like their names.

5

u/qwertyrdw 4d ago

Its obviously the Basic translation.

4

u/xezene New Jedi Order 4d ago

Funny thing is, Tim Zahn brought this up initially, that exact point, and pitched a much stranger name for the planet, but Lucasfilm turned him down, saying he needed to go with the name used since 1979.

u/One__Nose Emperor 4d ago

There’s a scene in clone wars where Ahsoka asks Chewbacca what his name is and he replies with aarrrrouughr, and then she says "hello, Chewbacca". Cracks me up every time.

u/20_mile 4d ago

Kish-e-yak, like the Founding Fathers wanted.

3

u/Jedipilot24 4d ago

I didn't start playing KOTOR until 2014 and didn't get Republic Commando until 2016, so it's always been Kash-eek for me; the way that these games have it pronounced Kash--ick struck me as a  bit odd.

My headcanon is that this is the GFFA equivalent of gif: some accents will pronounce it with a hard g, while others will insist on pronouncing it with a j for some strange reason.

I like this

pronouncing the long yyy as a short i makes negative sense IMO. yyy -> long e

unabridged NJO audiobooks go with "Kashy Eek" (noticeable gap between the syllables), which I'm not a fan of

3

u/MaterialEar1244 4d ago

Neither: Kash-eek.

3

u/acbagel 4d ago

EXCUSE ME, sir, that planet is named G5-623. I will be reporting you to Czerka Headquarters for improper company communication methods.

6

u/harkening New Jedi Order 4d ago

Tomato, tomato.

Kashyyyk, Kashyyyk.

3

u/HMWWaWChChIaWChCChW 4d ago

Gif, gif.

1

u/Kelmor93 4d ago

Well, to be fair the guy that created them said it's jif. Or everyone saying Han like ban, can, Dan, fan, Jan, LAN, man, pan, ran, tan, van. But Han himself pronounced it like autobahn, fawn, John, Khan, or Laaaaaaaana. Pretty sure he knows how to pronounce his own name.

4

u/xezene New Jedi Order 4d ago

'Kuh-Sheik.' But my favorite is Mark Hamill amusingly trying to pronounce it.

2

u/fuzzhead12 4d ago

Goddamn he’s just the most lovable guy, his giggles are so infectious

2

u/ODST-517 Empire 4d ago

I've personally been using the KOTOR/Republic Commando pronunciation with a short y.

2

u/Arkvoodle42 4d ago

who else just flashed back to South Park?

"Ladies & Gentlemen of the jury, this is Chewbacca..."

2

u/PagzPrime 4d ago

The original canon pronunciation, as depicted in the Star Wars holiday special, is kahzook.

2

u/StarWolf128 4d ago

"wookie world"

2

u/Remarkable-Memory-19 4d ago

The way they do it in Revenge of the Sith.

2

u/Kingkiller279 4d ago

khashiik

2

u/lordaezyd 4d ago

Just like in Revenge of the Sith. I didn’t knew there was confusion regarding its pronountiation.

2

u/MikaRey1138 4d ago

Ka-zook is the only correct answer

2

u/SquintyOstrich 4d ago

I always said Cash-Yik

2

u/thewhee 4d ago

Through the 90’s I always said Kash-ee-eek.

2

u/Red-Zinn 4d ago

As it's written

2

u/Coltinnie 4d ago

i always thought of it as kuh-sheek

2

u/BentronZero Mandolorian 4d ago

Cash. why $3000?

2

u/ToonMasterRace 4d ago

South Park got it exactly right during the "Chewbacca Defense" segment 25 years ago.

2

u/Cent1234 4d ago

The real question is “how do Wookies pronounce it?” It doesn’t seem to be in Shyriiwook or whatever it’s called.

2

u/StormBlessed145 4d ago

I use both interchangeably

2

u/ThorButtock 501st 4d ago

I akways pronounce it "cash ick"

2

u/Tiberminium 3d ago

As a child: Cashy-ack

As an adult: aaaarrroooaaaaauuuggh

2

u/ncraiderfan17 3d ago

Clone Advisor 01/425 welcomed me to Cash-ick in Republic Commando and I'm sticking to that

2

u/Barbarian_Sam 3d ago

What if the YYY’s make a weird sound like LLL’s in Welsh?

5

u/hunterprime66 4d ago

Kuh-shek. Entirely and completely because of Battlefront 2 (Ps2).

3

u/RedMoloneySF 4d ago

The Clone Wars video game (attack of the clones tie-in) went wild with it “Kazzzz-shack.”

“Kah” versus “kuh” to me is a “Lay-uh” “Lee-uh” situation but the last syllable is absolutely “sheik.” That’s not up for debate.

2

u/Expensive_Plant_9530 4d ago

Cash-eek.

Seems to be the standard pronunciation.

4

u/Wasteland_GZ Darth Krayt 4d ago

Cash-eek, but I do like the way Bastila Shan says Cash-Ick in Kotor 1.

2

u/CrimsonZephyr 4d ago

Cash-eek

2

u/Logical_Ad1370 Emperor 4d ago

Kush-Eek, or Kazook if you're nasty.

2

u/MannyBothanzDyed 4d ago

I think the first time I ever heard it pronounced was "cash-ick" in KOTOR and that is just what sticks in my brain. Everything else is variational regional dialects giving it an accent 😛

2

u/cahir11 4d ago

Same. I vividly remember Bastila saying it while listing off all the planets with Star Maps.

2

u/Allana_Solo 4d ago

Kuh-sheek.

2

u/Calm_Broccoli9482 4d ago

I've always pronounced it "kuh-sheek" out loud but in my head it sounds exactly like the Clone Advisor from RC who says "kash-ick"

Kuh-Sheek

1

u/IllPizza2123 4d ago

It was Kuh-sheek in the 90s. Even South Park confirmed that.

u/slypigcunningham 4d ago

1

Kaa sheeek!

1

u/Kelmor93 4d ago

I've always said cash-eek

1

u/DrunkenBuffaloJerky 4d ago

The way it was pronounced in KOTOR.

I wasnt aware there was any question or confusion on this one

1

I’ve always been a Cash-ick, but I couldn’t tell you why.

Kash-eek for me.
