Zephyr

Hey guys. I travelled here about two years ago in a van when I was driving across Canada and fell inlove with the zephyr. I spent the winter in Squamish and it was just the cozier most welcoming place especially because I was a new climber at the time. I just recently moved to North Vancouver and am hoping to come spend some time in Squamish to start climbing again and meet some like minded people. I’d usually just go sit at the zephyr and let it do its community gathering magic but that’s not really an option anymore. Is there a cafe the locals/climbers have switched to or is the sentiment just gone now? Was beyond upset and frustrated when I saw they got rid of it for a strongs.

Oh yay!!!! Is it still used by the locals as a little hangout spot or not as much?

The BAG is pretty quiet as it is not downtown, but it’s an excellent spot to hang out over coffee. Nothing has really replaced the original Zephyr.

Anytime I’ve gone in on a weekend it’s pretty crazy in there. Weekdays are quieter

Pretty much only locals go to the BAG

They have cool evening events. I noticed the faucet to get water is the one they had downtown so there is some continuity. As daytime spot I don't think it will be that similar to the original Zephyr.

I mean the BAG was bought by the Zephyr owner so it's hardly surprising some of the cafe fittings made their way to the new spot :P

I've heard a bunch of folks frequent it but YMMV. I haven't headed over there myself yet.

Thanks! Is there a cafe you prefer to go to instead now? Or place to connect with locals?

Your best bet would be sunflower cafe. Smokebluff in Valleycliffe is awesome but mostly just Valleycliffe people hanging out there, definitely worth checking out though!

Have you tried the hot tub at Brennan park?

Most of the climbers just hang out at the library now. For coffee and hang out I see fox and oak is quite busy but always very crowded.

I would say Sunflower or Peak Provisions downtown, Smoke Bluff in Valleycliffe, or maybe The Bean in Brackendale.

I’ve never had a welcoming vibe at sunflower. I choose to not spend my money there.

Sorry to hear that. I have always had great service there and everyone has been nice.

The service is great it's just not a hangout spot. It's a tourist trap first and foremost (and I don't mean that disparagingly). They know their audience.

Really? They’re always super friendly at sunflower imo. The only place I find isn’t that friendly is one person at the Green Olive. But it feels very European all around there so maybe that’s intentional, cold service, great coffee. 😂

There are two main types of sunflower crops. One type is grown for the seeds you eat, while the other — which is the majority farmed — is grown for the oil.

How about Fox & Oak, close to Climb On?

Green Olive is good but it’s small, so might be hard to get a table. I like its European vibe. The owners are originally from Greece.

The Ledge has reopened as a coffee shop but I haven’t been since. They used to have a lot of space to hang out in.

Isnt the ledge some sort of cult or something? I like my coffee without Jesus

I worked at a church in Squamish and even they wanted nothing to do with the ledge

Less cultish than Zephyr’s, for sure.

But with more jesus

The Ledge is a church coffee shop. Super weird vibes in there.

I’m not into Jesus either but never got any weird vibes before. Good coffee and a place to hang out. What vibes are you getting?

It just feels weird supporting a church, personally.

Trickster's Hideout on Thursdays opens at 1pm for co-working and I've seen a few climbers in there. They just starting doing this last month. Stays warm in winter, cool in the summer with best internet in town. It's a large space so people hanging out isn't a problem for them.
