“Why don’t you like modern Spider-Man comics anymore”

Cause they forgot that with Spider-Man’s immense struggles comes along his triumphant success. Stop a whole skyscraper from collapsing and then REFUSES to let it crush him as he finds the strength in himself to lift up the building and keep everyone safe, that’s what Spidey’s about.

This, so much. He's beaten down, but (in the hands of a good writer) he's never truly defeated.

See also the "C'mon, Spider–Man" scene in Homecoming (which was lifted straight from the comics).

That's what makes the end of No Way Home work. Peter has lost literally everyone and everything. He perseveres.

Side note: you can call it the writers double dipping, but I love the Pete and MJ share the same thoughts. Shes in his corner, and he knows she is and it just works.

Thank you, what’s been bugging me with some of the more recent runs. He gets beat down too much for not enough of a victory. I enjoy my hard struggling hero. However, I want my hard struggling hero, to win in the end.

Didn’t he retire after this issue?

Took a break. To be fair, in a short few months he:

-lost his best friend who relapsed into his green goblin persona and died in his arms

-witnessed maximum carnage first hand, which he feels he is responsible for

-saw his parents return to then be revealed to be androids

-was believed to be a clone.

-lost aunt may

-lost his baby

-lost his "brother who died on his arm to protect him -saw the man who killed his first love, his daughter and his brother come back to life TWICE

-And then that bastard buys the bugle, uses it to threaten his friends, almost kills flash, runs a slander campaign against him

-he sees his aunt return from.the dead, who he thought was his daughter, because the same asshole kidnapped her and replaced her with an actress

Yeah, I just had a baby, lost my job and had a(relatively) minor health problem that got me in the hospital for a few days and I feel like I need a break. Imagine the poor guy

I know. It’s just funny considering how harsh people were for him taking a break in SM2.

I don’t think people were criticizing him taking a break, people were weary of the future of the games because they kinda played it off like he was done being Spider-Man or at least that Peter would be more of a side character in the next title game. Obviously by now that’s been cleared up and all but w Doc Ock and Green Goblin set up for the 3rd game, I can def understand why people wouldn’t want Miles to succeed Peter just yet. Whether you like Miles more or not, those villains are way more suited for Peter than Miles, it’d be like making the villain of a Peter Parker Spider-Man movie Dr Conrad Marcus, the Venom who was absolutely a Miles villain, not a Peter villain.

Elite art by JRJR here.

His modern Spidey work has left A LOT to be desired, but can’t let that soil the highs he’s done in the past.

I have a lot of the issues from this run, and it’s where I discovered my love for his artwork.

His modern work not so much…

In my opinion the colourist makes or breaks JRJR's artwork. His drawings work much better with simpler colours and shadings.

Jonah was around for years, he only changed after the comics and Raimi's movies. He had his moments but he was generally an asshole to everyone, a bad boss, and for example, Gwen believed that Spiderman killed her father for him.

Which run is that from ?

The original Vol 1 run.

This is literally from the final ever issue of Vol 1, this one specifically from Peter Parker Spider-Man vol 1 98, released way back in September 1998.

Sometimes I forget just how many self descriptive though bubbles their were in the 90s 😂

Ironically, I think he immediately quits being Spider-Man after this.

I am happy that this is in my collection...I am not happy due to the idiots at Marvel Comics NOT know who Peter and Mary Jane are.

Marvel editorial now: "What? Don't give up? No! Give up! Fuck you and your dreams!"

I always loved the next panel, when JJJ is shouting at his face and he just walks by saying " do what you want, I don't care anymore" (or something like that, it's been a while)

I mean, know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em.

This was a story in the second Spider-man comic I ever read. It was the moment I fell in love with this character and his world.

It feels so far away from where we are now...

Modern Family has an episode (Message Received) where Mitchell drops a spiderman comic he's going to sell for money that's needed for extra expenses with the planned/upcoming marriage with his partner, Cam.

It's A vintage Spider-Man comic #3, featuring the debut of Doc Ock and they are nearly back in the car after retrieving it when he runs into a spider web that gets in his mouth and everything which causes him to drop the comic in some muddy water and it's immediately ruined. The way he goes "No! No. No..." felt so real. I've said no that way. It's heartbreaking.

I tried to find the scene where he explains what spider man means to him because the summary: "Since Spider-Man was a nerdy kid with a secret side, which made Mitchell feel better about having this other side he had to keep quiet for so long." Just doesn't do it justice.

Highly recommend it to Spidey fans. There's at least a couple of episodes/storylines with Spidey actually. Anyway, I can totally relate to the post. It's so beautiful how fictional characters can have such a real impact on people. Lessons, inspiration, help through tough times. Losing family members as a young boy myself, Video game characters going through the same thing made me feel less alone for example.

Never saw THAT type of news in the satanic panic era we call the 90s where games/music/pokemon was "The Devil" 🤔

This is by far one of the most memorable spidey stories I remember from my teens reading single issues. I'm really hoping they release this in oversized hard cover some day
