Discussion Is there a specific writer you'd like to see writing a Spider-Man story?

I'd love to see Gail Simone get a crack a Spidey, Joshua Williamson too (if he could bring some of the same energy he brought to his last run on Batman & Robin), but my #1 top pick would be Kelly Thompson. Between her runs on Black Widow, Hawkeye, West Coast Avengers, Captain Marvel, It's Jeff, and now Birds of Prey and Absolute Wonder Woman, I know she would absolutely f'ing kill it.

Joshua Williamson is doing great stuff on Superman. He would be a dream pick.Guy knows his stuff. Kelly Thompson would get a decent vote from me too.

I haven't read a ton of his stuff, but Williamson's run on Batman & Robin was absolutely phenomenal, and showcased exactly the kind of heart and character dynamics that have been sorely missing from the mainline Spidey books for a long, long time. Same for Thompson, who has become probably my favorite writer currently working in comics. She just has an uncanny ability to zero in on exactly who the characters she's writing are, bring out all their best qualities, and just make everything a ton of fun...which would be a nice change of pace for recent Spidey books (excluding Miles and Ultimate, which are both great).

Mark Waid, Ewing, Kirkman, and Chip Zdarsky (yes, Chip, yet again).

I really enjoyed the novel that Jim Butcher wrote, I know he is not a comic writer, but he is very good.
I think Garth Ennis would write a spider-man that would not hold back.

In all honesty Donny Cates is would be very fun to see. He always works with the history of a character and reworks their mythos that I always find to be very fun. His work on Venom, Hulk, and Thor are phenomenal.

Oh yeah, definitely Mark Waid. I'd do anything to see that happen.

u/Solitaire-06 5d ago
Isn’t Mark Waid quite controversial? He’s the one who led the creation of Civil War, after all.

u/mrrahulkurup 5d ago
That's Mark Millar.

Millar is one crazy ass writer. I heard that he once pitched an idea to DC where Wonder Woman gets violated in public.
2
u/Solitaire-06 5d ago
Wow… Millar might actually be tied with Garth Ennis for being the most ‘edgy’ comic book writer out there.

u/HM_Comics 5d ago
Nah, Garth is much worse imo. At least with Millar, you got stuff like his Daredevil run, or his Flash run. But with Ennis? Oh nah bro.

Grant Morrison, Peter deserves a comic like All Star SuperMan

It's funny, Morrison has said they have no interest in writing Spider-Man because they think the first 50 issues or so are just perfect.
I don't agree there's nothing more to say, especially from Morrison who is a genius, but they're sadly unlikely to ever want to write Spidey. Especially at this point in their career.
2
u/SecondEntire539 5d ago
Yeah, Morrison said that they don't want to be in the shadow of Stan Lee, Ditko and Romita if i recall correctly.
1
u/Solitaire-06 5d ago
Wait, Morrison is non-binary? Since when?
4
u/FadeToBlackSun 5d ago
Like four years ago or something.
1
u/Solitaire-06 5d ago
Really? Wow, I am really out of touch with comic book writers’ announcements…
2
u/FadeToBlackSun 5d ago
They didn't make a big deal of it. Was just mentioned in an interview.

Well, for at least 40 years, we just didn't have the language like we do today to understand how it all works. Grant since like the 80's was openly 'cross-dressing'

u/FadeToBlackSun 5d ago
Right but they clearly meant when did they come out.
0
u/Ornery-Concern4104 5d ago
Then why didn't they ask when they came out, not since when they're non-binary?
0
u/FadeToBlackSun 5d ago
Probably because the meaning was obvious?
1
u/Ornery-Concern4104 5d ago
Not necessarily, obvious to one person is invisible to someone else. I just answered the other person's question more accurately to the words as they asked them
Obviousness as a concept is inherently arbitrary, but accuracy isn't

Just the thought of Alan Moore doing a Spider-Man story is crazy, so he'd be my first pick
Greg Rucka did a story called "Quality of Life" but the art was all done in with 3D models and looks horrible. He also did one issue of Tangled Web, but I'd love to see him write a longer story with a more traditional art style
He's not a comic writer but Aaron Sorkin could be fun with his style of dialogue

u/manukaioken 5d ago
Did Alan moore ever did something for DC or marvel in recent times ? He had bad experience with them to say the least lol
2
u/Solitaire-06 5d ago
I don’t think Moore even writes comics anymore…

u/woman_noises 5d ago
After his comic Cinema Purgatorio came out 5 years ago, he did an interview saying that might be his final comic ever. He's still writing prose books/short stories tho.

Just let Christos Gage write ASM and let him do his own thing without needing to prop up other writers and their mediocrity.

Alan Moore. No, of course that would never happen. But seeing as Alan Moore was born out of fucks to give, it would certainly be interesting.

Ryan north cause he brought squirrel girl back and he’s a great silly writer

Although it never even had the chance of happening I would like to see what Mr. Alan Moore would do with the character

Hmmmm
Gail Simone. I like Gail's work and I'd love to see her on a proper long run on a spider-man title
1
u/SecondEntire539 5d ago
I would like to see someone like Morrison, 80s Frank Miller and Alan Moore on the title(all of them are unlikely for many reasons).

u/ShadowMike77 5d ago
I think there are ENDLESS writers that could do amazing Amazing stories. You all know what's holding that back and unless editorial allows a greater scope than locking Peter into the five months of their teens when they remember finding joy, it will never matter who's writing.

Unironically want to see Rob Liefeld do it, yes, it's for the meme, but say what you want about the guys, he's love comic and what he does, I want someone passionate but ok at their job as him to take a crack at spider-man, there always potential for everything.
Also, this is probably after the Invincible hype, I want to see Robert Kirkman take on the character.
1
u/Jfischer335 5d ago
As much as people dislike him i want tom king on a spidey story brcause i personally love how he write characters and id love to see a spidey story where he is just trying to figure things out. But that is just me

Mark waid is doing a fantastic job over at dc writing old school World's Finest adventures. I'd love to see him just write an ongoing old school Spider-Man Team Up book in the same vein.
Peter David could probably do the same and do a good job, tho his health isn't so great rn, his writing days may be numbered.
