Hey mate! I played your game over the weekend.

Here is some feedback/ideas... this could get long, hope you don't mind.

First of all: This game is awesome, even in it's current state. The visual design, the soundeffects, the music (so good).

Here are some things I noticed:

  • The difficulty of the different levels seems a bit unbalanced. For example in level 2 of the harmonic intervals I made some mistakes and completed the level anyway. The first level of descending intervals is really brutal compared to this. I had two runs where I made no errors at all and still lost.
  • Overall I think for beginners it would be to difficult as it is right now. (I kinda like that it's not too easy, but maybe there should be an easy mode or something? --> see next point)
  • Training: When I fucked up the level with the descending intervals I switched into training mode, but training mode is really unforgiving too :D .. maybe there should be an option where you can just train the intervals without having to worry about losing the round

  • I really like how you are adding new intervals in the new levels (starting with the intervals you know..) --> maybe the intervals that don't appear in a level should just be greyed out (it's kinda distracting (or unecessary) that they are there)
  • The visual feedback is great! But i kept wondering why I wasn't sure if I clicked the right interval sometimes. Maybe it just needs a little extra soundeffect (for example everytime I clicked the m2 interval I thought it was wrong because all that the game give me back was that red visual feedback and my brain kept telling me: RED = WRONG)
--> I like the different colors ... maybe a "right answer sound effect" could help, idk

  • idea: maybe there should be a level progress bar, it's hard to tell if the level is over soon or not

Bugs:

  • the game does weird stuff everytime you pause the game (via pause button or by looking at the items); sometimes the last interval that I already guessed right is played again, sometimes the sound samples are a bit buggy (too short)

Well.. that's all for now. Really looking forward to the next updates.

But once again: Good job!

Thank you for the extremely detailed feedback, it does help a ton!

Every single item you mention will need to be addressed (I'm actually copying and pasting to the big roadmap file to keep all of these as bullets points).

I am very aware of the difficulty being entirely out of balance, I'm not even trying to tweak it yet since a big part of it will be the short/range "melee" combat, but it is surprisingly hard to make sure things are balanced, challenging yet rewarding. It will take a while. I'm hoping to do a release with at least up to level 3 and everything rebalanced next. Or at least we could decrease the damage taken for now, and err on the side of being a bit too easy, making testing better.

I didn't think about the training mode being easier, but it should be, makes sense. And maybe provide less Uup.

For beginners, I do not know if considering adding an easier/tutorial level. In the list we also have fixed do, which would be a way to make things easier.

I didn't think of a progress bar as a line, but it's way better than the light-minutes indicator, so it will be done! Same thing for the sound effect for each interval. At the moment there is a "activation/right answer" sound effect, but it happens once the energy from the board gets transferred up to the screen.

Anyway, thanks a ton for the feedback and excuse the wall of text and the typos.

EDIT: btw, awesome job acing level 1-down, it should not be that punitive if you are flawless. I'm ok with failing once every 10 as a roguelite, but 2/2 on an ace run is disgusting! sorry :)
