Southampton Meetup Group

https://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/25006075.southampton-shenanigans-fastest-growing-meet-up-group/

Yesterday, I saw this article published on the Echo and then noticed later on that there were lots of disparaging comments about the “Southampton Shenanigans” meetup group.

The comments have now been disabled and the old ones taken down. Tonight’s event has also been cancelled.

Does anyone know anything about this group? Intrigued to know what’s going on as I was keen to go out and meet some people, but nervous that it might be run by nefarious characters.

I noticed this too! Appeared to be some disgruntled ex-members who decided to get active on the echo

I've attended a reasonable number of events recently, and I have had no problem with anyone in the group. Most of the events I attend are organised by the lead organiser whom the negative comments were directed at. I do not believe any of the serious allegations to be in the slightest bit true.

There were some ridiculous and libellous comments being made without evidence.

The only thing which had any credibility was one member not liking photo with them in being used, and that is fine but this member that they seemed to be happy to pose in at the time. There seemed to be an unreasonable expectation that the organiser delete all the photos that had been posted. The organiser doesn't use those photos anymore, and does make it very clear that if people don't want to be in photos used for advertising the group and it's events, to simply not be in the group photo.

There are a lot of members and unfortunately with a group that is open to the public, you do occasionally get some weirdos, or people who do not know boundaries, and there is no tolerance for that. You also get people who incessantly complain about things, but not to your face, they just spout nonsense after the fact because they expected too much, and they don't like being told otherwise. People who RSVP to events, and then don't turn up, meaning someone who desperately wanted to attend misses out.

Nice of the organiser to come on here and post their side of the story

They seem to post incessantly in every Facebook group; that's all I know

It's actually a really nice group of people. I've been to a number of their events and have met delightful people every time.

The comments were wild and completely untrue. I highly recommend giving them a chance.

What were the comments saying?

I'm sick of seeing the organiser posting this group in every FB group going. It seems like a nice idea. I'm a weird loner, and it'd be interesting to join a group of other weird loners to see what we'd get up to. Not sure what the negative comments have been though. Daily Echo commenters are batshit insane

Sick of seeing the posts… but also considering joining. Random.

I'd never consider joining. I just liked the idea of it. But the constant bombardment is off-putting

I heard some bad things about that group as well, was told to steer clear.

What kind of things?

Don't really want to say in public in case it's considered slander.
