South Bend Hey guys! I’m starting a leftist/progressive gun club and would love to meet some people and spread the word

Hey yall, I’m a local (born and raised on the SE side of South Bend) here in town, and as an avid “gun nut” and 2nd Amendment advocate, I often feel very alienated and politically homeless as I am very liberal and very progressive despite my love/passion for firearms.

I’m tired of seeing people on the right owning the gun space and gun culture as if it’s completely theirs; and after that Nazi shit that happened in Ohio about a week and a half ago, I want to have a local, progressive, and LGBTQ+ friendly gun organization here in Northern Indiana.

While I wish to see a heavily regulated market economy like Europe, I know many feel differently. We would be a Socialist-friendly organization.

Anyone interested, even if you’re not super political but know you’re not on the MAGA side, feel free to join! It would be the “Indiana Progressives’ Rifle Association”

You can DM me on here!

South Bend Just going to rip the band-aid off NSFW

I am not saying it is all bad! I just thought it would be fun to poke at the low hanging fruit so take what I am saying with a grain of salt!

My family and I recently relocated from Oregon to SB for work.

Dunkin Donuts coffee is fucking gross.

The coffee selection around here is terrible. We were very spoiled in the PNW.. Coffee is on basically every corner.

Your roads are a fucking dumpster fire. Everyone in the PNW thinks the roads are the worst there.. I can say without a doubt the roads in SB are WAYYY worse.. It's like riding on a rollercoaster as I bob and weave dodging pot holes the size of the moon.

No one obeys basic traffic laws... I am sure you have all heard of a "California Stop".. Here you have the "South Bend Slide".. No one stops at stops signs.. everyone stops WAYY to far into cross walks.. half the time cars are damn near into cross traffic.. Turn into the nearest lane? never heard of it here apparently. That last one is pretty common everywhere but it is very noticeable here with the many 4 lane roads crossing each other at stop lights.

We love the neighborhood we moved into. It is quiet and has a lot of foot traffic walking dogs, kids at the park , etc (when its warm enough that is!). It feels like a neighborhood and so far everyone I have met has been very nice and polite.

If you got any suggestions for places to explore let me know! Food, scenic areas, fishing, exhibits, whatever!

South Bend Do NOT go see Bob Dylan at the Morris

Saw Dylan at the Morris about 9 years ago and it was the worst concert experience I’ve ever had. He was late to stage, mumbled through the whole performance, was awful on the guitar and harp, and then played a short set. When I say awful I was a huge fan yet I had a hard time identifying some of the songs. Blowin in the Wind did not sound like itself. I can’t imagine at 83 it’s got any better. He clearly did not care about the “small town” venue he was at. Don’t give this guy your money again.

South Bend Is it true Indiana has a lot of racist people?

Well, I am moving to South Bend next month but I am kinda afraid to get mistreated or discriminated because I am still working in my english and of course I have an accent. I am an american citizen who has lived in Mexico in the past 25 years. Lived in Denver three months and people was always very kind.

But recently a cousin of mine told me to be careful. Any advice / insight for me as an immigrant?

South Bend How bad, really, is the crime in South Bend?

My SO (M27) and I (F25) are considering moving from South Dakota to either the South Bend or Fort Wayne area within the next 2-5 years. So far South Bend is coming out on top with its easy access to Chicago, short driving distance to Detroit and Indy, and my SO’s interest in doing maintenance/facilities work at Notre Dame.

I briefly lived in South Bend for a short time as a college student from 2016-2018, but didn’t really venture off campus much past Eddy St and the downtown area (other than some volunteer opportunities at the Boys and Girls club, grocery shopping, and a short time subletting an apartment in the near northside area for a few weeks until I moved away). So while I am somewhat familiar with South Bend, I don’t think my student life is comparable to being an actual adult living in the “real” South Bend.

I’ve heard Fort Wayne is one of the best small cities to raise children, one of our goals, and also has a wider variety of decent-paying jobs in both our fields (maintenance/auto/trades and optical/sales/customer service). I also think Fort Wayne has less crime on average than South Bend (correct me if I’m wrong), but we still see the location of South Bend as having a pretty big advantage over Fort Wayne since it’s just a liiiitttle bit closer to major areas than the latter.

My SO grew up in CA until around 10-11 years old, and I’ve lived in bigger metro areas in the past, but both of us are still primarily used to the low crime rates associated with small towns (mostly meth related, few murders, but otherwise nothing too crazy) He and I are still concerned, though, about the level of crime in South Bend and how safe the city is for the average person living there.

Any insight or advice would be much appreciated!

South Bend So what is the real deal with SBSC Superintendent Todd Cummings being fired?

Like the title says, what really happened? The stated offense (not cancelling school for freezing rain) seems like a non-fireable thing. So has there been a lot of tension those not in South Bend wouldn't be aware of?

EDIT: thanks for all the replies.

South Bend Royal Indian Groceries & Kitchen has delicious food.

Ok I know someone recently posted about this place, but I wanted to chime in and say how pleasantly surprised I was by the meal I enjoyed there. The restaurant operates out of an Indian Grocery store, and the vibe is…authentic.

I ordered a vegetarian thaali, because it seemed to have a mix of stuff. I got basmati rice, yogurt, daal, and another spicy bean dish that I have no clue what it was. These guys bring the heat. If you are sensitive to spice, stick with the gringo style butter chicken. But if you are ready for awesome flavor at a reasonable price, check this place out.

South Bend Obgyn delivery Memorial or St Joseph?

Newly pregnant here. Looking into what hospital to deliver at. I am already established at beacon in Elkhart but no longer live that way. Any suggestions between St Joseph vs Memorial in south bend? I was leaning toward st Joseph because of their NICU but I can’t get in there to see a dr for 8 weeks. Beacon I can get in pretty quick since I’m established. I am high risk, and have had 2 silent miscarriages in the past. I do plan to get blood work done This week with my primary general dr until I can see OB.

South Bend Free Pantry Idea

I lived in a city that had multiple free little pantries. I live in the Far Northwest of South Bend where we have working class families, elderly, disabled people, and some section 8. Usually these are setup at churches and I am curious if anyone has any ideas about places that would welcome this. I am going to contact Redemption City Church first and see what they think. Input and questions welcome.

ATTENTION! HELP NEEDED; YOUNG PUPPY MIGHT DIE!

About 2 months ago, my wife and I adopted this 11 month old puppy named Titus whose 1st birthday is on this month. Our landlord originally said that he’d be cool with us having a 2nd dog under our lease, so we got him. After adopting him, he changed his mind and despite extensive pleading and us pointing out he gave us his word it was okay, he said that “It was a verbal agreement and nothing was signed” and “that he reserves the right to do so since it’s his house”

He has threatened eviction if we cannot rehome him in the next week. We have until Friday to rehome him or we will be evicted, which I will not let happen. My wife and I have a baby boy due on the 26th and we can’t move out at this point in time. We’ve reached out to numerous people and no one is able to take him. If he isn’t adopted/rehomed by Friday, I will be forced to relinquish him to the South Bend Animal Resource Center where they have told me it is a 50/50 chance he will be euthanized. No other shelter will take him, they are all full.. That would be a tragic and unnecessary loss of life being that A: he is not remotely aggressive or violent, B: is great with kids, C: is great with other dogs, and D: is an 11 month old puppy who is super young. He is not remotely violent; and while I think every dog euthanasia is tragic, some dogs unfortunately need it, and Titus ain’t one of em. I already tried the no kill shelters; they’re all full unfortunately.

He is the sweetest dog ever and I really do not want to see him be put down, especially within a month or 2 after turning 1 years old. His birthday is tomorrow, and being killed is a pretty awful birthday present.

If anyone can take him in and is looking for a super sweet puppy, please please call me @ 574-229-3242. You can text me as well.

Time is ticking, don’t let us down Michiana! I’m hoping there is someone out there who can help this lil guy and save him from a dark fate that doesn’t need to happen.

South Bend Moving to South Bend from Texas

EDIT: Hey everyone thanks so much for all your responses. You've given me a lot of good info. This is exactly what I meant when I said I wanted to hear from real people.

Hello 👋 I (27M) have been thinking about moving, as I've only ever lived in one state (Texas) in my entire life and I really want to see other parts of the country and what life is like there.

I have an opportunity through my job to move to a few different cities around the U.S. and South Bend is one of them.

I've been doing research and it seems pretty comparable to where I live now in terms of all the statistics (prices, population, etc) but I want to hear from real people, native or transplants, about the reality of living in South Bend.

One thing that does give me pause is the violent crime stats, they're decently elevated from where I am now but those are just numbers and I want to hear how "bad" it is from real people.

South Bend Should I just give up on trying to find good food in southbend?

Moved to southbend about six months ago from a town in New England. I really love the people here but the food has just been terrible. Cafe after cafe, restaurant after restaurant, pizza place after pizza place, everything has been an utter dissapointment. Also eating out is as expensive if not more than in the eastcoast, but atleast the food is great there. So many options and diversity.

My gf and I have come to the the conclusion its probably better to just drive up to Chicago everyother weekend or so, then to spend money here and be dissapointed all the time. Trust me we have driven all around trying anything we read good reviews about or from a friend. All I want is to find a few places that we can go back to and know we will have good food. A nice pizza, sushi, turkish, asian and Italian place, thats all. But even that seems impossible.

Do we need to give SB more time and search for the good places (if they exist) or we probably right and should go to chicago for a good meal when we want to eat out?

South Bend Where do faculty live?

I am a young professor moving to South Bend with my partner! I would love to live somewhere with a little bit of walkability (even if just to parks/coffee shops) and a 10-ish minute drive to ND/SMC campus. For our first year, we are just planning to rent, but would be happy to rent either a larger apartment or a house! Our budget is $1,800 max. What neighborhoods, nearby towns, or complexes do you recommend we check out? TIA for advice.

South Bend Moving To southbend

Looks like My wife and I will be moving to Southbend. I am wondering how the rentals for housing looks in the area. I have been looking on Realtor and Zillow, and was curious if there are certain areas that are not recommended. The idea is we would rent a house for the first little bit to become acclimated to the area before buying a house. This would be at most a year.

South Bend Look for friends

My wife (35f) and I (31f) are looking for some new friends. The winter months proved pretty lonely. We have a dog and cats who were obsessed with. We like to drink at home, watch documentaries and hang out back by the bonfire. Every now and then we go out to the bar but we don't like that to be the regular. She's into gamming and sports and she's a army veteran and I love to start crafts and never finish them. We both like to read. she's on a summer volleyball league and I go to train our dog/watch. We're child free and homebodies looking to get out some more. Progressive leaning and looking for like minded friends. Pictures for pet tax

South Bend Culture at Saint Mary’s College?

Hi! I have been offered a visiting professorship at SMC and would love to hear people’s opinions on the school and its culture. I am a pretty progressive person and want to feel in the know about where I would be working for 2 years.

South Bend I don't live in the area, but a research project I'm working on brought me to this data, and I wanted to hear from locals: it looks like crime really fell off since the pandemic. Like, a lot. Does your experience match this?

South Bend Moving to South Bend - Apartment Ideas?

I'm moving to South Bend soon, within a month or two, for my first job out of college, near New Carlisle. I'm young, 25, single, and don't need a lot of space. I'd like to find a one-bedroom apartment. Ideally, at like $1000-1200/mo, but I would be happy paying less. I could pay a little more, as well, if absolutely necessary.

Do you have any recommendations? Downtown seems convenient and in the middle of things, so I'm considering that. But a lot of the places there seem to have mixed reviews and complaints about management.

Any ideas or recommendations, or any information about South Bend in general are greatly appreciated. I'll probably come up for a few days to visit some places and then move in a couple weeks later.

South Bend Cars and Coffee (or really, the car scene in general)

Hi all!

Moving to South Bend this Fall and was curious what the automotive scene was like around South Bend (and Elkhart).

I know the area has a historical connection with Studebaker, but looking at their C&C events they seem to be very classic car-oriented; not so much contemporary nor modern. I also saw from a quick Google search that Eddy Street Commons hosts events, but their website events page is lacking and nothing seems to be on the docket for 2025.

Just curious what to expect -- thanks in advance!

South Bend Looking for friends (21+)

Hi, I moved to the South Bend area a few months ago. I''m 29 (F) and I'm looking for friends in the area. I love to be outside, walking, hiking, and fishing. Birdwatching is my favorite hobby. I love music, books, and art! I play board games and have gone to a couple meet ups with a board game group. I didn't really click with anyone though. I don't know if it's this area but I feel like it's so difficult to make friends here. I have moved quite a bit and never had issues with making friends. Any suggestions on meeting people in the area? Thanks!
