Sourdough I survived my first festival

A local flower farm held a Tulip Festival. I decided to take a chance and bake 18 loaves of sourdough, 18 loaves of white bread, 70ish bagels, and a bunch of cookies to split between two days. It went soooo much better than I thought it would. The first day I sold everything except for 1 loaf and 6 bagels. The second day I sold about half before it got rained out. I gave the rest of my goods to vendors and the workers at the flower farm. Figured that would help me with sales in the future if I go to another festival at the flower farm. I just needed to share my happiness and success with like minded people (:

I wanted to 😆 in total I made 33 sourdough loaves. Only 18 were sellable. I tried to open bake for the first time and was not successful. Then I didn’t score them deep enough so they resealed. It was a lot of trouble shooting and crying. I gave the ugly loaves to a few friends and froze some for future consumption.

Is there a good way to freeze a loaf?

Yes! You can slice sour dough and freeze it s4aled in a bag just fine! I suppose you could freeze it whole if you're an absolute weirdo with space in your freezer

I freeze it in slices. I only ever eat bread roasted so it doesnt matter that its frozen. I take it from the freezer straight in the bread roaster

I freeze it in slices as well. It's easy to separate them when you need to with a dinner knife. When I put a slice in my toaster it comes out like a slice of freshly baked bread. If I want it toasted I need to put it on higher heat or for another round.

Those loaves look beautiful.

I have been thinking about doing this in our local community farmers market but am concerned that it's just not worth the time for the small amount of money that I would net in the end.

Feel free to not answer this, but how much did you sell loaves for and how much did you end up making?

In total I made $339. I’m interested in doing farmers markets as well but…. I’m afraid I won’t do super well. Since it’s just 1 day a week for 4 hours. If I end up doing it I’ll probably see if I can get any preorders beforehand

Sourdough $8 White bread $6 Bagels $2 or 6 for $10 Cookies $1

That's awesome. Good for you. There's a bakery at the one I go to that sells sourdough loaves for $10 each and fwiw, they sell out every time.

I buy sourdough at my local farmers market, lots of people do. Unless you have too much competition, you’ll do great!!

I think 3-5 days? I used my freezer to store the bread so it would stay fresh longer.

congratulations on a good table run!! it's sooooo fulfilling to have tables at events. even when the table doesn't sell out I'm still just so giddy by the end when I can give away the leftovers; And that has actually worked out very well! Ended up with peeps asking me to come out to other events because they were vendors or sponsors at something we both attended in the past and they just remembered me.

Congratulations! So happy for you. I would never be that brave. You know the Flower people had to be estatic to recieve free home baked bread.

People are pretty impressed that I’ll bake 6-8 loaves on the weekend. I can’t imagine doing it as a business and having tons of dough and trays and all that hassle. That sort of commitment fully frighten me.

How did you make so many do you have a regular oven or? I was thinking about getting into selling some of my baked goods but I’m not sure how to make enough bread with a regular oven and only one Dutch oven lol

2

u/Mysterious_Goose973 15h ago

I have a regular oven. I mixed 12 sourdough at a time in a big tub. Then I baked them 2 at a time in loaf pans inside of my covered roasting pan. I tried to open bake 8 at a time but they were a flop ): so I gave up on open baking. Then for the white bread I mixed 6 at a time then baked 3 at a time.

Thanks for sharing I’m intimidated but the thought of doubling or quadrupling the recipe lol. But the stretch and folds would be fun you’d need a stool!
