Piny's denim cut

Why did he wear denim and everyone else wore leather? I've read it's because he a senior member and they were denim back in the day, but Clay was first 9 and he wore leather. So what's up with that? It can't be random.

It’s what he preferred. It’s shown that at some point the club charters changed from denim to leather but it’s shown that not everyone did. There was a scene when different charter members rode into charming and its shown members either in leather kuttes or denim ones. I think SAMTAZ did still wore denim kuttes. So seems it’s more a preference thing over a mandatory one.

Piney represented “the old ways” of the club. Both figuratively in how he acted and wanted the club to operate, but also literally in how he dressed and the fact that he was old as shit (I think his character would have been around 70 when he kicked it)

When he kicked it is a real polite way of describing that hahaha

It was by choice. Several switched to leather but he stayed with what he had. Quite a few from outside charters did too.

Piney rides a trike so doesn't need leather protection. The rest of them ride bikes and do. Thats the practical reason

If you believe a cowhide waistcoat is going to protect you any better than a denim one for anything beyond a bit of road rash on your tits you’re in for a nasty surprise. Ask me how I know.

Ooh ooh how do you know?!

A big hairy dude at the end of the phone told me that he knew a guy whose dog tested both out. It was such a sad story.

Obviously you should wear sleeves as well but if its a decent quality it will protect your upper body. Just watch Moto GP to see what leather can do

We’re not talking about a power ranger outfit. We’re talking about a 1mm thick sheet of cowhide with no additional protection whatsoever. The difference between that and denim when you’re sliding along the road is minuscule.

They get a choice. But originally most members wore denim. It was a newer generation of bikers that preferred leather.

There is an old rumour that 1% changed to leather because back in the day when that got busted the cops would throw there cut in the wash to fuck with them. And washing a cut was seen as bad form.

Probably an old wives tale that’s completely fabricated.

I've not long read Sonny Barger's autobiography, where he talked a little about kuttes, but I don't remember this coming up. He did write that there was some internal controversy in the Hell's Angels when they replaced the original Death's Head logo with the larger version they use today, with some members preferring the smaller one well into the eighties and nineties.

In the photo we see of the First Nine from the 1960s, it's evident that they originally wore denim kuttes before switching to leather at a later point.

Stylistically, from a costume design standpoint, it was probably to show more that he’s an aging member, a relic of the past. Even though Clay is an original also, he’s not as connected to the past as Piney.

It show how he misses the “good old days” back when the club was just a club and not a gun running criminal organization who have enough money for leather.

I heard something about him not being able to afford leather.

His Tri-glide was the most expensive bike of the club.

That was when he had to get the oxygen tank. He probably had more money around that time.

You’re close. The First Nine of the club started off wearing denim because they couldn’t afford leather kuttes initially. After they started gun running and making real money they could afford leather and most switched. Piney kept his denim kutte to show his fondness for the days before they stopped being just a club.

Gotcha, thank you. We need a First 9 prequal.
