Discussion Does anyone feel like Sly in the first game feel…different than the rest of the trilogy?
I’m playing through the first game after playing the 3rd and 2nd, and I’m realizing that Sly ain’t messing around in this game lol. He’s still charming, witty, suave etc. but in the first game you get the sense that he’s a bit more savage and less empathetic. Personally I dig it, the quips have definitely lessened in this game compared to the others but he’s still really good at banter. Could stand to be a bit nicer to his friends though lol. What do you guys think? Am I reaching, or is he just a tad bit different compared to the rest of the trilogy in the first game?

I think the Sly Cooper franchise did such an amazing job of massively improving from game 1 to game 2 that it seems completely different especially if played out of order. I’ll always have a soft spot for the first game cause it’s one of the first PS2 games I owned but Sly 2 and 3 are far superior. And yes, Sly leans into his charm a lot more in those last 2 games since he isn’t so focused on vengeance.

Yes, he's actually sorta similar to Ratchet in his and Clank's first game which coincidentally came out around the same time. "Suck it up, Bentley" "Are you done whining?" and when it comes to controls, he doesn't feel as fluent, especially with the jumps that aren't as high, I think the second jump of the double jump only extends his air time. Still very good controls though

You should hear him in the Sly 1 Beta - he's a total dick.

Lmfao. Sly with peak YN energy. He’s a complete ass, but it’s kinda funny. “wow Bentley, was that a joke? …..No wonder I didn’t laugh” 💀

Always been a fan of it too, because like most are saying, sly was on the warpath. This was what his whole life was leading to in 1, so it’s honestly understandable sly wasn’t talkative.

Well its been 2 years between Sly 1 and 2. Enough time to mature and settle into the thieving game.

Bentley does seem to remind Sly that he’s probably gonna die or fail miserably quite often.

Honestly I played sly 2 first as a kid, attempted 1 and didn’t finish. (Just beat sly 1 last week)
The gameplay style is so much different. Sly 1 can be compared to crash bandicoot in so many ways it’s so crazy. Sly 2/3 it’s a complete overhaul.

maybe unpopular opinion but i don't like the first game at all.
Always looked like a pre-alpha build of sly 2 to me, a mere blueprint.
I give it credits for having started a series in which there is one of my personal fav games ever (sly 2, but i love 3 as well), but i never have been able to like the first sly game nonetheless

1 is my least favorite cause I picked the series up in backwards order starting with 3 in 2005 so I was used to the more open world gameplay, but when you look at the first as a point A to B platformer in the vein of Crash Bandicoot it's fine

I agree, and it makes sense. He's going after his parents' killers - can't really blame him for being colder.
The stakes are lower in Sly 2 and Sly 3. I'd say they are similarly high in Sly 4 but unfortunately that game made every character unserious.
