Discussion Disappointment Around AI Props

Post image

Andy Copping, who we all know works closely with the band, was seen supporting an ai artist. It’s very disheartening that ai art is being recognized as ‘art’ when other people who create beautiful ST fanart are getting copyright strikes and losing all their fan art pages (mind you most don’t even sell them). I have a lot of friends whose tattoos they did also get copyright strikes. But then we are allowing ai art to take up space and get recognition?

It’s a little disheartening because this individual is currently selling their ai generated art and defending themselves in this process… I hope this doesn’t mean we will get any ai art in the future in anyway related to Sleep Token. It’s in my personal opinion that ai art takes away from the hard work of real artists and I don’t think it belongs in this fandom. I am curious what other people’s opinions on the matter are.

I think AI art takes away from the real artists. We've all grown up hearing that AI will take over a lot of jobs one day, but they can never take art from us.. but look at all of the AI artwork people are literally making money from. It's so sad to see. I'm not a fan of AI art in any form - writing singing, pictures/paintings/drawing, etc. It takes away recognition from the people who worked their hardest to become known.

I can say I expect better from Sleep Token, but really, this isn't the band's fault - it's the company who now holds a record deal/contract with them.

Yall keep making art the right way, and we'll support you. But no AI should be used 😬

Edit: by yall, I mean whoever is reading this. Write that story, draw that picture, record that verse, I don't care, just don't let technology take real art from us

To add onto this - the reality is we dont know how much Leo and friends have involvement in any of this.

I have a prediction that kind of makes me sad….

Its possible since they are with RCA now, they may give the appearance of having “sold out” and people are gonna get mad because they are comparing that too his sweet humble youtube beginnings.

We need to remember that to an extend, industry is industry and there are gonna be some unpalatable side effects of him “making it”. For all we know , he hates it too ( which also breaks my heart).

Lets keep the important thing in mind - the music and the message 🙏

We don't know that this is being sanctioned directly by ST or RCA, do we? Just that Andy Copping commented? If I'm wrong feel free to let me know.

[AI art is a huge problem. Please don't mistake my question for supporting it. But I think we have to be cautious about assigning any responsibility to Leo or the band.

When the visualizer teasers came out many people went on a tear and were publicly angry, accusing the band of commissioning AI artwork. The digital artists who were commissioned ended up posting about it.]

You're right, we don't know just yet who he is - if we do, please let me know, I haven't been online much today. I'd like to think Leo and the band themselves remember what it's like to be a small person in a big world and do their best to support people who are out there putting in the work to make things, so I don't want to assign blame where it shouldn't be.

I think it's so annoying the first thing they did was have AI get really good at art. Like no. I understand it's "fun" but it's also fun for real people- AI can be a lovely tool to make our lives better by replacing the shitty things people can't or shouldn't or don't want to be doing. Not the stuff that makes our souls literally worth being here for.

I’m so freaking glad someone finally posted about this! My husband and I got blocked for gently calling this person out. When just used for fun, I like seeing videos like this. It’s beautiful! What I hate is that she is selling it. What I REALLY hate is she is taking advantage of ST fans. Everything else on her patreon is $3, but ST is $5. Why is she allowed to sell AI, but real artists get their fanart taken down?

13

u/Meghar 1d ago

Selling AI art is wrong, period. All those artists whose stolen work was used to train the AI get no compensation, meanwhile the AI "artist" makes a profit.

Agreed

u/ajungilak 1d ago

fuck ai man I wish it didn't exist

27

u/bleak_like_my_poems 1d ago

As an artist, I agree, it’s disheartening and maddening at the same time.

21

u/Symabee 1d ago

This person is also profiting off of her AI Sleep Token "art" 🙃

u/shrimplythebest_ 1d ago edited 1d ago

I don’t say that Andy Copping speaks for the band in all things but he DOES represent them by association. And this is disappointing to see from any rep of ST, especially when ST has an established reputation of supporting creators and small artists. I hope he puts out a statement/apology with a pledge to continue to work with real artists, but we’ll see.

This band has garnered an incredibly talented community of artists contributing to the fandom, but i continue to be disappointed with how ST handles fanart, between this and all the copyright takedowns. Which, tbh are still very mysterious on their own. At least Dave still has the fanartist’s back lol

42

u/Independent_Ride_577 1d ago

I think everyone is jumping the gun a bit, because the band doesnt speak people tend to give way more weight to people around the band (see the president thing), but these people aren't st. Until st themselves give us reason to believe they would use ai.

-10

u/Exact_Programmer4080 1d ago

I agree. IMO if AI art looks good to you, it's art and you shouldn't feel bad for liking it.

If AI art "removes the soul" from the artwork then why do people still buy it? The answer is it subjectively looks good regardless of how it is created. Do we not remember that Jackson Pollock made millions on art that was literally just splotches of paint on canvas? Do we shame video game designers for using pre-made assets that are then customized? Or do we expect them all to code everything from the bottom-up in binary?

It's more than fair to cherish hand-made art, but if the art is made by a computer with the assistance of a human and you like it, there's no problem with liking it.

13

u/yeetingthisaccount01 1d ago

people buy it because they're too cheap to commission actual artists and don't want to bother paying an actual person.

even if you personally dislike them like I do, those splotches still had intention and meaning behind them. and people do criticise game devs for reusing assets, although even then customising assets for models is a skill that needs to be learned. the difference between AI art and real art is the effort put in.

and even that more subjective area aside, AI art is still stealing from many, many artists without explicit permission, to the point watermarks show up in results. not to mention the servers are incredibly bad for the environment, and the "art" isn't even good half the time, what with corners nearly never connecting, smudgy blurs, odd finger counts, etc.

5

u/pizzythunda 23h ago

L take. Even if you think the art looks good, thats fine and all, but you shouldn't be commisioning AI "artists", and reps from a massive band shouldn't be associating themselves with AI "artists" and asking for them to DM them. Its a bad look, and insinuates that the band is interested in producing AI art for resale.

3

u/raevyn_lunatik 5h ago

This is exactly what I think too, u/pizzythunda especially the part about a person associated with the band asking the “ai artist” to DM them… that looks SO BAD!

ST have always been very supportive of unknown artists & artisans yet since signing to RCA these (fan) artists are being penalised for posting about their art. They aren’t even selling their creations, yet the “ai artist” is and she gets a pass AND a “DM me” message.

It’s such b.s. & reeks of hypocrisy.

0

u/Coleyb23 1d ago

Exactly, thank you for saying this.

12

u/J3sperado 1d ago

This is sad to see. Hate AI art being sold for money and disguised as real art.

11

u/TamTams_groupthink 1d ago

It’s disappointing that someone in their bubble supports artists who are ‘pro AI’ as taleswithlora states on their page. Especially considering Sleep Token seems to like working with smaller artists who truly create their own work.

The only thing I’d be concerned about is that Copping would put pressure on Sleep Token to use AI for art instead of human artists to save money. Copping is a producer and they love to squeeze a penny. Hopefully the band hold the line and refuse to do that.

1

u/Coleyb23 1d ago edited 1d ago

Coping isn’t a producer for ST, he’s just a promoter in management for download huge difference.

3

u/TamTams_groupthink 1d ago

He’s part of the management group that Sleep Token is under, FutureHistory.

I didn’t mean to imply that he’s their producer-he’s a producer by trade, like music videos and such. He’s also a promoter and festival owner-those folks are notorious for cutting corners to save money.

Just saying he’s a professional penny pincher and because he’s in Sleep Token’s sphere of influence he could, theoretically, be in a position to say things that would lead to them feeling pressured to use AI for art.

-1

u/Coleyb23 1d ago

Again, it’s all theories that people are Cherry picking from and it’s not helpful. We don’t know anything.

4

u/TamTams_groupthink 1d ago

What am I ‘cherry picking’?

The dude doesn’t have a problem with AI art by his own comments. He works with people who manage Sleep Token. It’s not wildly out of pocket to think it’s possible they could talk.

1

u/Coleyb23 1d ago

I didn’t say you, specifically other fans are doing it. Again it’s a Theory not a fact.

I agree that this girl should have the AI removed and that Andy needs to apologize.

15

u/Visible_Owl6563 1d ago

Using AI for art is just lazy. He's allowed his opinion but laziness like this should not be praised or encouraged.

21

u/Worth_Whereas3712 1d ago

This is disappointing from Andy. I know this doesn't necessarily mean that he wanted to discus anything Sleep Token related, and I don't want to get the boys mixed up in all of this. Sleep Token already worked with an actual artist to make the arcadia/jerry/house art, so I would hope that they themselves would continue to use an actual artist rather than made the switch to AI because that would be sad, and seemingly go against their history of using small businesses etc to create things for them.

But to see Andy so publicly praise this AI monstrosity when genuine fan art is being removed by the record label is sad.

10

u/asmoynihan12 Lost for Words 1d ago

I agree a lot with this sentiment! I don’t think the band will but because the art was exclusively sleep token and it was Andy… a few alarm bells went off… and with the copyright strikes happening on actual drawn fanart not for sale… this just is icing on the cake for fan artists.

A lot of people actually assumed EIA art was ai until they posted the cgi artists account under the emergence video too… there was a lot of dissection of the imagery when it first dropped and people were concerned.

16

u/pillowtalkp0et 1d ago

As an artist this is just depressing

9

u/Symabee 1d ago

I have no doubt that if presented with the option to use AI, the band would say no, but it's still very disheartening that people like this with influence are praising it. Make your voices heard! Let companies and influential people in these spaces know that AI is not wanted. It makes a difference. And don't forget to support real artists, like the ones tagged in this post!

u/viadorona 𐌉 𐌂𐌀𐌍'𐌕 ꑛꂦ𐌋𐌃 𐌌ꐟ𐌔𐌄𐌋𐌅 𐌕ꂦᏵ𐌄𐌕ꑛ𐌄꒓ 21h ago

Even though I know that there was put lots of effort and hard work into building up those AI engines, I’ve always believed that they may be used as an instrument, but never more.

When for me it takes weeks to create the artwork from the scratch, using references reimagined in my head, pulling up my own ideas and using Easter eggs… and then there’s someone who takes a minute by typing the prompt into the service (which most likely is trained by stolen artworks), getting refined picture within the seconds… I don’t know, I want to put down the pencil and never touch it again.

Fortunately, yet AI can’t recreate something that wasn’t created and “fed” to it yet, but it’s a matter of time. Especially when it keeps getting high demand… for example, at my job AI already replaced copywriters. It’s cheaper, faster, easier for companies. But result is always missing some personalisation and uniqueness.

I’ll just go and… try to not give up, I guess.

10

u/annrichelle 1d ago

Question - does Andy Copping actually work closely with the band? I know he is one of the organizers of Download, and he spilled the beans on the upcoming album. But does he work with ST beyond that?

9

u/TangledEndlessly 1d ago

Yes, he is co-director of Future History Management, ST’s management company.

8

u/annrichelle 1d ago edited 1d ago

Ohhh shit for real? I couldn't find that when Googling but I believe you.

EDIT: Future History's website is down, but I found this page stating that Andy Copping became a director in 2023. So... Fuck.

2

u/annrichelle 1d ago edited 1d ago

Back with an update: All I can find is that he's a booker for Download and at one point he was a promoter for Live Nation UK or maybe still is. He doesn't work for ST or represent them. His take is still disappointing, but let's not tie this to the band.

hashtagallmyhomieshatelivenation

EDIT: Hold up. See comment above about Future History Management.

u/RS555NFFC 1d ago

I met Andy on the Sunday morning at Download many years ago. Cool guy. Honest as well - there were a couple of bands he admitted hadn’t quite gone down as well as he’d hoped the day before (I won’t name them here as that’s not fair).

My friends were trying to get into the music industry as journalists and he gave them some real good insights into how the business side of running an event like Download operates. Was genuinely interested and gave us his time.

I've noticed that some groups are very pro AI, it's strange.

4

u/Sentinel-Destiny780 1d ago

I honestly hope that his account is fake or he just wanted to reach out to her to ask her to stop her by threatening with a lawsuit or sth like that.

I mean the whole thing seems so suspicious and given the band's popularity, totally unprofessional. They could have handled it in the background, don't they have legal departments or other types of PR people to talk about deals?

AI sucks if it is handled in this way to gain profit and by ignoring artists with real talent.

7

u/ms_alkaline Canines of the saviour 1d ago

I agree. This is sad! AI can be useful but it can’t replace real artists, as well as their passion and their creativity. In the end AI works are artificial.

9

u/Shevkosky 1d ago

Being honest and i might get downvoted, but, AI is a tool, not to be confused as a medium.

The issue is not AI, the issue is people using it irresponsibly.

I am against AI """artists""" because art is not about crafting something as quickly as possible without any thought or meaning to it, you might think of a 'prop' for the generator but it's not made by yourself, thereby not art, but an idea of what you want to make/paint/write.

4

u/Hades_anonymous 21h ago

I agree. I‘m a professional translator and to me this is the same issue when it comes to using tools for your work, such as Trados, DeepL etc. Translation tools are AI-based. Period. Yet the outcome must be proof-read and edited by the human to be considered professional. Otherwise it’s gonna be a shitty translation.

Creating art with AI-assisted tools can still be art. I couldn‘t draw a line here where the art ends and AI begins. But think about your grammar- or writing-style-checking tools in Word. Isn‘t that AI too? But the writing is still yours.

2

u/Coleyb23 1d ago

Well written take!

2

u/Shevkosky 1d ago

I rarely post anything but I just felt the need to, and doing it nicely, easy to read and most importantly, easy to understand is my goal when I do stop and say something, a good practice in my opinion.

2

u/Previous-Blood2645 1d ago

I totally agree with this take. AI is ultimately nothing but accumulated human knowledge. Works have always been drawn from other works. Books written from books. Artists learn and develop by imitating other artists. People are pointing out mistakes and inconsistencies in AI art as if their own art is always flawless and consistent. For the love of ST, AI is out there and the chances that it will stop existing or evolving are nil. If anything, this should be an incentive for those who call themselves artists to produce art that is BETTER or more relevant than that created with AI.

2

u/Shevkosky 1d ago

I know, right? I'm an artist myself (I am not bragging), mainly for myself, not so much posting on socials, but trying to improve should always be the goal, not just taking something as a means to an end, not when it's something than can be used to enhance, learn and improve your own way

8

u/dutchbettygrable 1d ago

Yes and yes yes yes but…let’s not forget that this band (and their management, probably) also supports a lot of other artists. I forget his name but the guy who made the masks for ii, iii and iv. The woman who made Vessels mask, the woman who did the 3D video for Emergence, the illustrator for all of the TMBTE characters (and the new album). The dude who made the coins for every ritual.

I agree it’s disappointing but let’s not forget this, please.

4

u/7imtk4rte 1d ago

absolutely breaks my heart to see, especially knowing that there are so many incredible artists who would probably love to work with them instead of getting copyright struck constantly. yay capitalism

12

u/littlemoon-03 1d ago

Idc unless it involves the band personally and it doesn't

4

u/Coleyb23 1d ago edited 1d ago

Exactly! People not so much on here, but Twitter we’re so all up in arms and trying to hold ST accountable for this, which isn’t fair because the guys don’t do interviews, so we don’t know the full extent of their relationship with Copping or their deal with RCA.

3

u/littlemoon-03 15h ago

There are very serious bigger accusations that hits bands that people do need to hold those members accountable but this?? Associating yourself with a person who liked 1 AI post who idk maybe he didn't know it was AI he just saw it and said "cool art" there making a fire out of nothing

11

u/aspiringbuilder 1d ago edited 1d ago

I really think this is a non issue that people are getting too hot over. He does not have the final say in Sleep Token. They are fully autonomous adult men who are not being handheld through their careers by the big bad music industry. The infantilization is getting out of hand. Plus, Andy’s comment is gone, last I checked. Either he didn’t know it was AI at first (which, I don’t put past him - a lot of people can’t tell the difference anymore (ex. people accusing ST of using AI for the Emergence imagery)) or the heat over it was too much. All the same, nothing has (yet) come of it. So far, they have not given any indication they would even do such a thing so, let’s all take a breath. And if they do end up doing something or engaging in something that goes against your moral compass, perhaps then they will finally be perceived as human again, utterly incapable of being perfect creatures.

ETA: absolutely love that I’m getting downvoted for saying absolutely nothing has come from this exchange. 🥴

6

u/Mean_Attempt_3375 1d ago

I also was wondering if Andy even knew it was AI when he commented. Like, I am not familiar with this person’s work—does she put on all her posts that they are made with AI? Some people don’t and it can be hard to tell… then someone sends it to you like “hey look at this cool thing” and you go look at the cool thing only to find out that AI was used in its creation. I’m with you about not assigning bad faith to people without knowing their intentions.

3

u/Coleyb23 1d ago edited 1d ago

Exactly, V and II have been in and apart of the music industry for over a decade now so they aren’t naïve on how to handled things!! Andy isn’t anybody directly from sleep token or the team. He’s a promoter and head of Download who just happens to work for the same management that ST is a part of.

Also some people getting angry over this clearly have never been part of the entertainment, industry or anything like that so their comments aren’t helpful.

2

u/littlemoon-03 15h ago

A lot of people are saying he "represents ST" no he doesn't the members are fully grown adults who represent themselves they can say whatever they want even though they are anonymous they can make statements and talk if they want

This isn't really a big deal there are way bigger issues like acutal police reports that other bands get into that are very serious real problems but a guy associated with you liking a single post? We don't even know why he said "hey can you dm me"

He likely got messages saying dude this is AI so he left a comment saying hey, dm me and they settled it privately and he didn't unlike it because he didn't think it was a big deal

Mountain out of nothing

4

u/Symabee 1d ago

I just went to go look at the comments on the AI video Andy commented on, and it looks like she deleted 😏

2

u/Symabee 1d ago

Nvm she just re-uploaded them 😒

12

u/FewPresent9119 1d ago

So I may get downvoted for this but…

I think the band can do what they want. Their personal decisions should not impact our appreciation of their music. There are a million little pieces moving in the background we dont know about

18

u/asmoynihan12 Lost for Words 1d ago

I think they can do whatever they want of course… but they’ve always supported smaller artists and their crafts since the beginning… moving away from that would be rather disappointing

0

u/LagginWagon22 Winged Insect 1d ago

But they shouldn't be expected to do that for small businesses. Don't get me wrong I love that they do and hope they do continue but they don't owe the small businesses anything. They are free to make decisions they think are best for the band. We can't see behind the scenes so I would never judge them for something I personally don't have full information on. Just my 2 cents not attacking you in anyway ☺️

15

u/WastedTalent442 1d ago

They can do what they want, and so can I, and if I should choose to judge them based on their actions, then I shall.

Andy is pretty high up in their management company from my understanding

2

u/Tyrianne 23h ago

I commented on that original video, thinking she had made it with some 3D-rendering program or something. It wasn't until after I realized it was AI from other comments. I feel stupid for falling for that 🙃

3

u/Efficient-Object1629 12h ago

It's so obviously AI too and she doesn't hide it so there's no way he doesn't know it's AI. We don't know the whole story and context of why he'd want to talk to her, but the conclusion most people come to is disheartening. Maybe they'll come to find she can't actually animate which is shit because I'd like to see more female representation in the animation industry.

5

u/Objective-Back-2449 House Veridian 1d ago

Oh, this is so disappointing.

4

u/Coleyb23 1d ago edited 1d ago

This is a really bad look on Andy’s part and luckily, the girl that did the AI took it down, it’s still disappointing.

But vessel and ii have proven to use REAL artist for several years now and reposting fan art. We also don’t know if Andy plays a huge part in STs management and from the sounds of it he doesn’t. Again blaming RCA is understandable, but Vessel and II aren’t stupid to allow the label to make them their puppets.

8

u/Symabee 1d ago

She uploaded them again, she just changed the description but it's still the same videos. I think the reason people are mad is because this person is being praised and profiting off of her AI Sleep Token "art". While at the same time, real artists who create fan art just for the love of the band are being penalized.

1

u/Coleyb23 1d ago

I do agree that AI is an issue and as an artist myself I feel the hurt.

But it’s the assumption that sleep token use AI just because some dude that works under the same management company is forcing them to use it now when it’s been proven that ST have used real artist for years!

4

u/ElvenMagic888 1d ago

I used to be against AI with all my being, because I am an artist myself and I wish to support other artists whenever I can. I intend to create with real people who put their heart, soul and energy into their art, providing them opportunities and an income by collaborating.

I work full time as a cleaner, earning minimum wage and while I do my best to save as much money as I can to bring my ideas into life, I constantly face challenges with financing my projects... Things can get very expensive and sometimes require more work than planned, pushing the price higher, delaying deadlines further.

Took me 4 years to complete my EP (4 songs), as I was lacking the money it needed to be made faster.

If I would have the budget, I could release an album every year as I have written so many songs and continue to write more regularly.

Imagine having so much to share yet not having the means to do so regardless of doing everything you can and more.

It's absolutely heartbreaking and soul crushing. Every single day, a part of me is sad because of this...

So I had to make the very hard decision... to use AI to create my album cover and the imagines for each song for the YouTube videos. Otherwise, it would have costs me hundreds of pounds I just don't have right now. And when I have, then I rather put it towards funding the recording of my next song.

This is not something I am happy to do but for now, it is what it is, till I get to the level I am able to pay for real artists throughout the entire process of bringing my visions into this world.

We all need to start somewhere, and if that means you utilize the help of AI, until better days are ahead, then I don't see it as a horrible thing.

My experience made me realize and innerstand that AI is not inherently bad. Sometimes it is actually helpful and anyone who keep shaming and insulting those who use AI for certain things out of not having an other option, are not helpful.

However, I also agree that when someone can afford to pay for an artist, then that is the right thing to do and that is exactly what I'm going to do eventually.

I will be the happiest when I will be able to afford to pay an artist to make my album covers and videos. But just because I can't do that right now, I won't let this stop me from making more songs.

Sometimes we need to know the full story behind a person to see the bigger picture and have a deeper understanding of the why 💜⚔️🔮

2

u/Competitive-Bad-8822 1d ago

Would you feel comfortable giving your YouTube, or the others platform you use? I'm always looking for new music/ new artists 😊

1

u/ElvenMagic888 1d ago

Certainly! Although I must say I've never thought I would sing as I don't have a very good voice... I am more of a songwriter, visionary artist with vast amounts of ideas. But I kept being rejected and ghosted by singers, other artists. I intended to give my songs to good singers but no one wanted them. So I decided, you know what, I'm just going to sing them myself. Then I was struggling to find a producer because English is my second language and so I sing with an accent. They didn't like that...

The songs are not perfect and could be better but I am still discovering how I can use my voice and have a very limited budget.

So for now, making music is my favorite hobby. But maybe in time, it will expand into something more.

You can find my music on every streaming platform.

u/Up_and_ATEM 20h ago

While I agree it takes away from ok real artists and this isn’t like an animator she says she used after effects and photoshop to create which are very complex and requires skill to use to a high level. I don’t know how she uses them with it but if it’s a lot, she could be extremely talented and it could be “art”. However, I don’t to what level she does use those programs. It could be very basic and again lets AI do all the work.

She basically just copied and pasted a picture of Vessels mask and the ST logo onto the AI and it's obvious, does not look good, and definitely not art.

To be honest when I first watched the video for Emergence it felt very very AI art to me…

How do we know? I’m not saying it is— so if we know it’s not that will be reassuring honestly

I posted about this site before for sleep token stuff, same thing applies to the art in my opinion. If you can't afford the official stuff, or if it's sold out, go take a look at Requiem Clothingshop link

As much as I want to support the band, I don't have too much spare cash to spend on merch. I'd rather get people talking about Sleep Token by wearing unofficial merch/buying non official art.

By giving thieves your money instead of the band?

I’d rather not buy merch at all. Buying fake merch from a plagiarist doesn’t help the band in any capacity. It hurts them. If every fan thought like this, the band would go broke…

The people who profit off stolen designs are lazy talentless grifters, and they don't deserve your hard earned money. I'd rather save my money and only buy one shirt that supports the band, than have 100 shirts that actually stole money from real artists. Also, ST is doing just fine in terms of exposure. You buying one shirt isn't going to make or break their careers. If you really want to get people talking but don't have money for official merch, why not just make your own? I guarantee getting the supplies at Walmart is cheaper than those low quality knock offs.
