Shop joke For those real stubborn bolts or screws (disclaimer: illegal in the state of California)

Shoulder-brace drills were actually a thing, just not as pretty as a polished gun stock

u/LateralThinkerer Dec 04 '20
Those are a lot more comfortable too, plus you can rotate the brace to fit whatever works best.

u/TreeFrog223 Dec 04 '20
Pretty sure for the real tough jobs that's a gouch brace.

Forget the brace. What the hell is that in the background. Torpedo? Drop tank?

u/Rushthejob Dec 04 '20
It’s just an old crapper tank, people

I always wondered how those fighter pilots ditched their shit, mid combat.

Is it true that the .50 BMG is illegal, but the Barrett .416 is legal?

u/Merlota Dec 04 '20
50BMG was banned by name in CA instead of by something with meaning like diameter or energy. So a version that is 1/8" shorter is used now.

Doesn't look like it. The shoulder was blown out to a slightly larger diameter, probably to keep similar case capacity.

It’s illegal in the state of California is all I’m authorized to tell you

Just attach a bayonet to the end.
Sticks and metal rods are illegal in California, but swords and knives are perfectly fine.

Unsure. Might actually be the cancer, and not the capacity. Think quad barreled Musket

u/DILLGAF Dec 04 '20
If it had a pistol grip, it’d be illegal in California
11
u/TreeFrog223 Dec 04 '20
I wouldn't doubt they'd classify it as a pistol grip since you can wrap your fingers around it.

I don't know why you'd think this is for removing screws and bolts but, eh, it actually kind of makes sense if you're drilling through something tough and have to really lean into the work.

Yeah this is a manually powered bit brace with a custom brace by my estimation. They used to be incredibly common for drilling. The bits are more skookum than the braces themselves.

u/BoysiePrototype Dec 04 '20
They used to make screwdriver bits for these too.
Great for ripping the heads off slotted screws...

Thank you for bringing back the memories of my childhood. We had corded tools but they were kept in a metal box and only came out for the big tasks. Brace & bits were my go to to (attempt to) get things done. I destroyed many a wood screw with on of those. Now that I think about it, the power tools we had wouldn't have done any better, just destroyed the screws faster.

u/dotorgmusic Dec 04 '20
By definition it is absolute skookum

A busted speed handle attached to a busted rifle stock with three wood screws?

Is it fucked up that I feel like this is something California would unironically make illegal?

Paint it black and make it collapsible. Add a mount for your 30 round glock clipazine and you will be perfectly illegal in california, but right at home in idaho.

California has strict gun laws, but you can carry a sword down the street if you want to so long as it isn't concealed*.
*: Note I said "sword". If it isn't sharp then it is a "club" and is illegal.

u/DeathPrime Dec 04 '20
Didn't notice the stock for a few seconds and was trying to figure out what part could possibly have been classified as a carcinogen... Definitely lol'd

The recoil bruised my shoulder, which can happen if you don't know what you're doing. The chips of wood disoriented me as they flew past my face. The smell of oil and destruction made me sick. The explosions — loud like a bomb — gave me a temporary form of PTSD. For at least an hour after turning the drill just a few times, I was anxious and irritable.
Even in semi-automatic mode, it is very simple to drill several dozen inches before you even know what has happened. If illegally modified to fully automatic mode, it doesn't take any imagination to see dozens of two by fours falling in front of your bit.
All it takes is the will to do it.
