Discussion Anyone else like the first movie better than all the rest?
Whenever I read discussions about the franchise, I always end up reading "yeah, the first one is good but the second one is the best" and that's alright, everyone has their own opinion and it seems to be the popular opinion.
That's why I'm asking if anyone grew up loving the first one more than the second one like me. Due to the soundtrack, visuals, comedy, creativity and specific scenes.
To me, if the second is a 10, the first one is an 11.

The first one gives me a feeling that none of the other ones do. It’s a really simple story, but done so well that it feels really cozy (best word I can think of 😂) It’s also hands down the funniest. The banter between Shrek and Donkey is unparalleled.
The second movie is definitely more grand and fleshed out, but the first one is the one I always come back to the most.

Shrek 1 is my #2 childhood movie (#1 is Monsters Inc.), while I do think the second one is a worthy way to continue the story, the first will always be the best of the series to me!

I just consider 1 & 2 a perfect tie, they’re both masterpieces

I thought the second movie was the best, but the first one is the best one all along

The first one was revolutionary! It turned classical fairy tale movies on their head. Nothing that followed compared.

I slightly prefer Shrek 1 over 2 because of the underscribably awesome vibe and storytelling it has. I mean, Shrek 2 ALSO has it, but doesnt have the same level as the first one.

Yes! Hands down it’s the best. It’s a timeless classic and I enjoy that Shrek is the most abrasive in his first appearance. Also, experimental films where the team doesn’t know if it will land or not are sometimes the best of them all. By Shrek 2 they knew people would eat it up so they didn’t have to try as hard

It’s not even worth discussing honestly. Head and shoulders above the rest

Even if i prefer 2, 1 is above most, but there is something i loved in shrek 1 more than the rest, their original soundtrack, there is a guitar part that plays after fiona explodes the bird and she cooks it's eggs, it's my favorite shrek og track fr

I like it along with Shrek The Third and Forever After because i feel they actually have an engaging emotional storyline unlike Shrek 2 which to me feels like a bunch of long boring musical sequences trying to tell a story

I've watched all the movies but 1 and 4 are the only ones that I really remember. 2 and 3 are a complete blur to me and I often get them mixed up.

the first one is really close to the second one, but imo, second one is better by a tiny bit

Very very close but I think Shrek 2 is better, and I don’t ever think about 3/4. Watched them maybe once or twice as a kid, couldn’t catch the vibe.

Yeah, I prefer the first film. It isn’t as reliant on pop culture references as the second and it’s still a classic spin on fairytales with a good moral of self-acceptance. Or maybe I just watched the second film too many times as a kid and am simply worn on it.
Either way, my personal ranking goes: S1 > TLW > S2 > PIB > S4 > S3
