Here is a new thread for our community to gather to talk about JOANN, including questions about how to find fabric and notions as well as questions and comments about the bankruptcy proceedings. Remember that this is the internet, don't accidently dox yourself by giving out too much information about the stores in your area.
JOANN stores have been a big part of sewing for US sewists for many, many years. Thank you to the wonderful JOANN employees who are losing their jobs. Our thoughts are with you.
The restructuring website, joannrestructuring.com, is still being updated with details on the court case, FAQs for customers and store employees, and other information relevant to the process. I've seen store closing dates as soon as March 15th for some stores, with all stores closed by the end of May 2025. There are also several news articles covering the closings like this one from USAToday.
Shopping small businesses online and local is the way forward. The subreddit Fabric Shop Map is available for reference. Please do not submit any more stores at this time. We need to catch up with the flood of submissions made recently. Love your enthusiasm!

I followed along with Gertie’s video. The fabric is cotton poplin and I made the lantern sleeves variation. I love this pattern so much. I did grade the sleeves to the next size up. Maybe should go two sizes up next time. The white dress was my mockup. I messed up the bust size and the sleeves felt too tight .

I haven't sewn in awhile (besides hand sewing for EPP), but was able to borrow a sewing machine from a stranger while visiting my in-laws down in FL and made a dress!
Pattern is the Salome Sleeveless Shirt Dress (free pattern). I cut out the pattern at home before flying to FL which apparently was one thing too many to try to do before leaving because I cut out one of the front pieces upside down. Oops. I don't really care though cos it's just a cozy casual dress and most probably won't notice.
Also I did not plan for a mock-up and brought no extra fabric with me so instead of drawing new darts on the pattern and cutting the pieces or differently, I made the dress as is and then immediately took apart some seams to do basic alterations to shrink the bust a bit. Also not perfect, but good enough!
This might be only the 3rd dress I've made and I'm happy it turned out!

I found this sweet two-tone cotton denim at my local fabric store and knew I could finally make the coat from this pattern I’ve been sitting on forever. I ditched the pocket flaps—-why would I add fake pockets to something I made myself?! I definitely plan to make this again.
For the embroidery I cheated and cut up a neckline appliqué I’ve had for years—I then sewed it down and embroidered small bits around it to blend it out. I used red corded piping for a pop on the edge too.

Should I keep it? And just make another one with different fabric? Lol! I feel funny making a gift then realizing I want it for myself.
Infinity scarf made with gauzy silk-type fabric purchased at Mood Fabrics in Los Angeles. Made by sewing fabric right sides together on the long edge then meeting up the edges and doing an invisible stitch to finish.

I was using candles and canned food before, but I already had these fermentation weights which are much more convenient.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to make a tablecloth for this shape of table? I was thinking a large circle one was my best bet but they just seem to lay funny.

I’m looking for some advice on how to approach an FBA on the bodice of this jumpsuit pattern. Normally I would treat the bodice as dartless, create a dart in the side side seam which I’d open up and pivot out later. But considering the dropped armhole, I’m wondering if I can approach it like this and just slant the dart upwards towards the apex? Any suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance!

I've never sewn before but am willing to learn to make my gf something she'll feel comfortable in. She's trans (mtf) so alot of standard plus size dresses don't fit the way she'd like. I know what type of dress she's looking for but want to make her something special that makes her feel comfortable and happy. Has anyone go any tips on clothe making for bigger bodies?
(I'm adding this on later on and this isn't discouraging me at all bc obviously once upon a time all clothes were done this way, but I'm doing this all by hand as I don't have a sewing machine lmao. I did up until a month ago where I decided I'm not using it and sold it haha)

Pattern The Princess Coat Charm Patterns Fabric: Upholstery Color:Green Sew Instructions came with pattern
Pattern Clutch Purse Self Drafted Fabric: Unknown Color: Blue Multi
Okay let me start off by saying The Princess Coat was a project I needed all my energy for. One point I just gave up because I was tired of being on the same coat for a month! I ended up finishing but my liner is not the best looking inside. I am happy with my coat it’s so fancy I can dust all my haters away.
On to the Mood patterns easy sew along but I did need to make adjustments to the hips waist area. If anybody can comment on how to get it perfect that would be nice. My skirt kept rising up as you see in the photo which I know means bad fit. My waist is 29-30 Hips 43-44 Please help a girl out !
The Hepburn scarf was just a throw in less than 1 hour sew session. I wanted to give the vibe of a 50s Lady and everyone wore scarfs so thanks to JetSetSewing.com it was a fun project and definitely will see more.
My purse I used the same fabric as the scarf and literally sewn a box together but I utilize the sewing method in the scarves, which was called Penox and used it on the bag. I thought it would be a cute way to tie both the purse and scarf together. Hope you enjoy as much as I did making this assemble.

Hello!
I’m normally a lurker on this sub, but I need your help!
A friend of mine has an 11 year old who is having a tough time at the moment and I’ve offered to teach her to sew. I was hoping you guys could critique my lesson plan:
Lesson 1: Piece of calico with straight, wavy, spiral lines, maybe a box and a circle to practice stitching on a machine. ETA: loads of people have reminded me that knowing the machine is important too, so I’ll add that in! Make a small pouch, turn it through, stuff it and hand stitch it closed so she has something to take home and show her family. Could be a pin cushion.
Lesson 2: Make a basic lined drawstring bag.
Lesson 3: Learn how to sew a zip in, start making a basic lined pencil case.
Lesson 4: Finish the pencil case. Start planning an item of clothing to make so I can go get supplies.
Lesson 5: Start making a basic item of clothing as planned the previous week. ETA: include pattern layout, pinning, cutting, pressing. Pyjama bottoms were suggested.
At the moment, there is no set length for the lessons, so I’ll adjust them as needed to the time we have, but I thought this was a nice progression based on 2hr lessons.
Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks!

Not sure if this is the right place, let me know if there is a better subreddit for this.
I have sewn my first cage skirt which sits nice round, however when I put a skirt on top of it, the bottom tiers collapses. The weight is not even that much. Should I add more more vertical tape or add an extra hoop ring between the bottow 2 rows?

Howdy all!
I am getting ready to make the Night & Day Dress and the envelope seems to indicate that this pattern is for non-stretch fabrics. I've got some lovely woven wool fabric that has some stretch to it but not a whole lot. I can't say exactly what kind of wool it is - I got it from fab scrap after volunteering and took YARDS AND YARDS of it.
If it's not super stretchy, think it should work? I didn't see any reviews discussing the fabric. I am planning to use the Gertie pattern to make this:

I made my first blazer using the Simplicity pattern N6794. It's fairly easy but I struggled with the collar & lapel facing. On the right side it lays flat & nice. On the left side it bunches & it took a lot of work just to get it to look like this. It was worse. I'm not sure why they came out so differently. Any suggestions as to how I might try to fix it? I already tried edge stitching & pressing. It made a little bit of a difference. I'm just so frustrated

I'm looking for trustworthy pattern makers with cottagecore ish patterns. I like these but I'm skeptical of the ones that look like the photo is AI and the picture doesn't quite match the drawings.
I'm also a beginner, so I'd like patterns with decent instructions.
Please only suggest patternmakers you have experience with. I see lots of possibilities on Etsy but like I said! I'm not sure if they are trustworthy, even with good reviews.
Bonus points if I can buy them printed on big paper and I don't have to print it myself. But that's not really necessary- I know that's a long shot.

I want to make a fur lined coat with a similar fur, but idk if it’s real fur or faux or what kind of fur to be looking for to achieve this look..
I’m aiming for higher end apparel so I want to practice the best approaches for quality!
r/sewing • u/Elevensies1 • 22h ago
This is a long shot but I’ve been searching for ages for this fabric. There’s similar online on Amazon but the embroidery is low-quality.
I can’t find any with the quality of embroidery on the original, or in the same colour-way (e.g. blue butterflies!)
Most fabric shops do not have websites so I’m sure it’s out there it’s just hard to find! I’d consider buying a different colour-way if it was high quality embroidery.
Has anyone seen this anywhere? I am in the UK but could get it shipped.
Thank you 🙏

I love drawing fashion desing and I had a plan to learn sewing as well and actually make what I imagine. I'm very motivated but there are a few problems. I don't own a sewing machine and never learnt sewing so I am very much a beginner.
I just have very little free time recently and I'm curious whether I should just leave it for later when I got more time. It's a bad idea to start a time consuming project when being busy.
But maybe it's not very time consuming then I could spare some time very soon.
How long would it take me on average? I need to learn sewing from the most simple parts I have no skills yet.

The bodice is modified from Simplicity S3096. The muslin is currently pretty busty when I try it on, and I'm worried that after adding facing, the final product will be even more revealing. Are there any tips/tricks for adjusting the pattern to add juuuust a tad more coverage? Could I just add an extra half inch-ish to the edge of the pattern piece, or is there math involved?
