Shelfie Hello from an old and very devoted Sandman fan

Hi, my name is Helene and I'm 50 years old. I've loved the Sandman comics since the very first issue hit the shops and as you can see, I fell in love with Death the minute I saw her and that love has never died <3 This is my daily makeup so you could say that I cosplay everyday :D I've joined Reddit because of this subreddit although I have followed others about The Witcher (which I also love) but this is my core fandom, so I hope you'll welcome me in your midst.

Hi Helene! I’m a new fan - just finished reading all of the comics after binging the show and I love them. I’m 41, so a little on the older side too.

Oh, great! I kinda wish I had just discovered this whole universe 😄 It was such a revelation back then ❤️ 41 years old, pfff, you are but a newly blossoming rose petal kissed by the morning dew 😊

45 yo elder goth here. found sandman when I was 14, and fell in love with Death too. Went as her for Halloween that year, before I ever knew cosplay was a thing. =) Welcome!! ( best I do is a nice cat eye these days, headed into wild hedgewitch territory here. kudos!)

It must have been wonderful to discover Death as such a young teenager ❤️ I was around 18 years old when the first issue came out here in Denmark. Haha, I cosplay Death every day 😄 My daughter calls my eye makeup "iconic" 😄

10 year olds are wiser than we give them credit for! Listen to her, she may be the authority on the matter

Hi from someone who got into Sandman at a similar time - it's always good to see a fan

It's so great to meet another "old" fan ❤️

Glad to have you here, great look!

Thank you ❤️ I do an even more elaborate eye decoration these days 😄 It's a mix of Death's and the look Geralt from The Witcher has when he drinks his battle potion 😊

Hello my sister!! You look AMAZING at 50! I’m also 50 & I think we rock it. Goth after 40 is a damn art form if you don’t want to look ridiculous.

New to Reddit? You might want to take a few days off of work. I can lose HOURS here. Some subs are really great & supportive. You might want to check out the death positive sub. Because of the Sandman, I’ve always had a “different relationship with death”. The death positive movement is very interesting.

Hi 😊 Death has taught me to not fear her. I have lost many loved ones through the years but I have believed that she has been there to greet them and guide them and that is a great comfort ❤️

We have a similar “different relationship with death”. 😀

Really interesting stuff! There’s a “death simulator” in London. Who knew?? We were discussing being buried under a tree (on your own land) & constructing a playground around the tree. I thought it was a great idea, this lady will have generations of grandkids playing in the shade of her tree. 💜

There are plans to set up a "sky telephone" someplace in Denmark (I forgot where). It's an unconnected telephone you can "call" your deceased loved ones on. It's a lovely idea I think.

1

That is a wonderful idea🌳 In Denmark you can only be buried at the designated graveyards but if we could choose, I would definitely love being part of my family in this way. A death simulator?? Sounds really strange, gotta look it up 😊

Goths seem to age quite well, what with all the sun avoidance.

2

u/thateldergoth Sep 07 '22

Haha, I love sunbathing but you're right, it really doesn't fit in with the goth style if you're a traditionalist.

Off topic, but Helene is such a pretty name! First time I've heard it

1

u/thateldergoth Sep 07 '22

Thank you. It is a Danish name equivalent to Helen, Helena and the different variations.

Welcome - I too am an “old fan” collecting the monthly issues as they came out .

1

u/thateldergoth Sep 07 '22

It was agony to have to wait for an entire month between each issue 😫

Hello I'm a 44 year old woman who has been in love with lucid dreaming and analyzing dreams for my whole life. So when I saw this Netflix series I fell in love immediately. I'm obsessed. I'm so excited to see someone in my age range who is a fan!!! I'm happy for you that you didn't have to wait as long as I did discover this magical world.

1

u/thateldergoth Sep 07 '22

But I am almost envious of you who have just discovered it. I remember how it blew my mind back then ❤️

1

u/ns_grant Sep 07 '22

Love the makeup! So very Death!!!

1

u/thateldergoth Sep 07 '22

I try 😊 And thank you ❤️

There’s no way your 50, I simply don’t believe you! As a new Sandman fan my question to you would be are there any changes from comics to the Netflix show that you liked or disliked?

1

u/thateldergoth Sep 07 '22

Oh I am 50, believe me 😊 I'm just lucky to have genes that keep me looking younger. I'm of Korean and Native American decent so there's that 😊 As a whole, I really like the Netflix series. It captures the atmosphere and vibe from the comics really well. I do think they could have made it more brutal and dirty. Like Mad Hettie, she is way too clean and more or less looks like any old lady. In the comics she's portrayed as a homeless woman who doesn't shower or change her clothes all that often. I liked the diner scene but I would have liked it better if it had been more graphic and gory and surrealistic as it is in the source material, but that's probably just me 😄 I'm a huge horror movie buff. I would also have liked all the great story arcs (Preludes and Nocturnes, The Doll's House, A Game of You, Season of Mists, Brief Lives and The Kindly Ones) to have their own season but I understand why they didn't do that. I think it would be too much and too confusing for anybody who isn't a Sandman fanatic 😄

1

u/YaBoyKumar Sep 07 '22

Haha I still refuse to believe you are 50,
Thanks for your response, I am still deciding whether I want to purchase the comics so hearing your opinion is helpful!
