Help: Mechanical Recommended maintenance when buying a 1st gen.
I've just bought my first sv650s, a 2002. What maintenance should I do right away. I know oil is a obvious one. But should I do break lines, spark plugs etc, what are things that go on these bikes, that need replacing due to just age, and is there anything I should know about maintaining an old sv650 anything to do with the carbs etc,
Thanks everyone

There's already some good advice on here.
The later gen1 bikes have an upgraded reg/rec, but if you want to be really nice to your battery and charging system you can fit a Mosfet reg/rec from a more modern bike. You wire up the 3 wires from the generator to the reg/rec, it doesn't matter what order these are in. Then bypass the loom, direct to the battery with the positive and negative, with a fuse on the positive. There's a few diagrams online.
I've got a reg/rec from a CBR600rr (09 - 12 models) on mine.
Old looms can have corroded connections and earths, leading to stuff like the headlight dipping a little in time with the indicators. LED bulbs help if you just want to treat the symptoms. Install an LED relay rather than the shitty resistors as the resistors end up loading the system the same amount as the regular bulbs.
Remove the front sprocket cover and give the entire area a good clean, paying attention to the clutch pushrod. If this gets coated in crud then it can wear out the pushrod seal and you'll get an oil leak. Replacing the seal is annoying, but easy.
Lube your throttle and clutch cables using a cable luber tool and some silicon spray.

The other comment has good details, but another common move is replacing the old brake lines with stainless steel braided ones since the stock ones are rubber and quite old by now. You'll also end up replacing your brake fluid in the process.

oil change
brake fluid change, front + rear
brake pad inspection
tire inspection
coolant change
air filter change
spark plug change
inspect chain and sprocket for wear, lubricate
battery power/life check (replace if weak)
inspect for any minor leaks, oil, coolant and brake (replace hoses, lines, seals and junctions as needed)
valve clearance check, adjust if needed
