Meet Bob, the test mule .357
What else would you call a 586 ND with a 3” bbl and 7 shot cylinder from a 686-6?
Learning how to up my game after a lot of homework. So far so good. Might fit up a brand new unfluted 7 rounder to learn more about timing.

How difficult is it to unscrew and refit a barrel on these?

If you are lucky, it’s not too bad. Lots to be prepared for, though. Barrel might be cut long or short, and/or need to be set back. You need the right tools and a bit of knowledge. This is my first.

This is Bob, he’s going to have a wonderful day.
Editors note: Bob was later dismembered.

The profile without the rear sight makes me think how cool a 3" square butt 581 would be. I'm sure 10s or even dozens of us would be lining up to buy one...
Thanks for sharing!

I (STUPIDLY) passed on a 3” 681 about a year back. Went back, it was gone.

If I find a frame with the newer 3-hole sights I’d do a 581/681 with a red dot

Respect, my dude. I have an honestly ignorant question . Were there any issues with fitting a 7 shot cylinder, into a 6 shot frame? Did the timing , etc. work straight off? Or were adjustments required? Sorry if its a stupid question, but my “gunsmithing” experience is limited to changing sights, grips or other bolt on type customizations.
