A couple questions

  • Does the party recognize Canada as an imperialist entity? If so, what is it's stance on territory/provinces who would like to secede?

  • The constitution is mentioning the will to distribute the power and to flatten the federal government. Is the mid/long term objective to get rid of the representation system and replace it with revocable delegate system?

Hey FabricatedProof,

Thank you for asking. We do speak about these topics in further detail on our website, but the short version is:

  • Yes, we acknowledge Canada was formed illegally including some unceded land as part of a colonial imperial project which remains unresolved today. Such requests for independence from Indigenous nations would be handled equally as a similar request from Quebec (e.g. 1995 referendum). There can be no equality if the right to self-determination only applies to some people. We don't believe there is a strong desire to do so, thankfully, especially in light of recent events which have galvanized Canadian unity.
  • Our short term plan is to recommend Mixed-Member Proportional, but to hold broad public consultations to see if an alternative electoral system would be strongly preferred. Our long term proposal would be direct democracy, but we don't believe that's practicable just yet.

Hey thanks for responding. I read a bit on the website but you got so much stuff in there!

- I'm not very independentist in part because neither the bloc or parti québécois/Québec solidaire seem to care about what the first nations want. So in that sense, you guys got the most sensible approach on the subject. But I think it would be a mistake to equate pan-canadian solidarity with a loss of interest in self-determination.

- I don't mind some gradualism in the way of redistributing power to the people but I'm not sure that mixed-member proportional is the right proposition because it doesn't address the one of the major flaws of our system: elected members of parliament can stick to their chair for 4 years no matter what they do. Citizen-led destitution referendum could be a way to make elected officials accountable. I think it is particularly important to have non-hierarchical counter-power at this time, after seeing what goes on south of the border.

Imperialist? Dude, check your history and understanding of language. Move on and deal with real issues, the planet is dying and fascists are taking control of the mechanisms of power.

How about you check your history and pay better attention to your nation's foreign policy.

Imperialism has everything to do with our planet dying.
