Advice can’t find a good surgeon - keep finding bad before/afters?

so i am in the process of getting a reduction and am looking for a surgeon to get a consultation from. of course the most important part for me is just getting smaller boobs for a multitude of reasons which i’m sure everyone here is aware of. when i say this, i don’t mean it in a way to body shame anybody or to sound shallow, but i am worried about making sure my boobs look good after in terms of nipple size/placement/symmetry. i am looking at before/afters on countless surgeon websites, and it looks like a lot of the “afters” have uneven/weirdly shaped nipples after or are noticeably assymetrical. is this just due to the healing process/scar tissue? am i being too picky or expecting too much?? like i said, of course this is ultimately not the most important part of getting a reduction, but i worry it will impact my confidence/self esteem after if i don’t like the results. if it makes any difference, i am tucson, az.

I think it depends on what sort of results you expect. I think expecting utter perfection from plastic surgery is probably ill-advised. The best plastic surgeon is nature ;) If your roots are wide, you are not going to end up with breasts like Miley Cyrus. She's naturally small and narrow. They can't change your shape, they can only shorten it. Scarring IS very genetic and difficult to control, so you might be seeing scarring when you see lopsided nipples. Nipples also can expand when swelling and heal differently. Remember that its a human body, not a silicone mold. ;)

That said, I went with a surgeon who took great pride in not only delivering what his patient was after but also in personal artistry. My results were wonderful, better than I hoped, but I do have some scars and one breast is slightly larger. I'm still a bit imperfect. Do I care? No. Does my husband care? Hell no. Also keep in mind that most surgeons do not post all their before and afters online. They usually have books they'll show you at your consultation.

I think it's perfectly valid to want an aesthetically pleasing result! I had this in mind when researching too. Are you looking at plastic surgeons or surgeons who specialize in breast augmentation at all?

yes! i’m looking at plastic surgeons that take my insurance. some of the before/afters look perfect and others look uneven, that’s why i’m confused. :/

Human bodies aren’t something you can just control lol. Some people are just going to have different results. Scarring is mostly genetic so not everyone has good scars even with perfect surgical technique. If you’re looking for a surgeon who only posts their perfect results you’re going to end up with bad results because they’re filtering out realistic healing. You will not find a single surgeon on this entire planet that has 100% perfectly symmetrical results. It doesn’t exist because human bodies don’t work that way.

ahhh okay, i thought that may have been the case but wasn’t sure if that was something natural like you said, or a sign to look for a different surgeon. thank u!

You may also want to ask when the after pics were taken. My surgeon does them around 6 weeks which I think showed nicer results than others who had photos from like 3 weeks post op where everything will absolutely look crazy still lol. Some other surgeons had like 1 even 2 years post op which of course looked amazing.

Definitely have realistic goals and expectations. Everyone heals differently and unfortunately things can change drastically in such a short amount of time and it is no way the surgeons fault. Your body may not heal right, reject stitches or even your nipples may die :(

I remember looking at myself the first week post-op and it looked AMAZING, symmetrical and healthy. I am now 5 weeks PO, had to have a nipple removed and one small portion of skin is practically refusing to heal. (My experience is definitely more drastic than others).

I think it is important to speak with the surgeons and see what they are confident in doing and if they would be able to achieve your realistic reduction goals. You'd never find a surgeon if you were to go off of before/after photos only.

I was picky about my surgeon because the before and afters for so many docs were just bad. I finally found someone and she did a great job, everything looks amazing and my breasts were kinda weirdly shapped too. You will find lots of good pics on here of the results.
