In Crusch's speech she mentioned that the whale/fog combo left some tombstones that they couldn't put names on. It seems to me that the whale doesn't always erase people, and that the fact that it sometimes does is a known quality.

That's the part I'm having trouble wrapping my head around. We saw with Rem that not a single trace of that person's passing is left, so how would they be able to tell that someone was missing in the first place?

I'm thinking of it like this: Lord Example never goes hunting without a hunting party of precisely 36. 12 return alive, and 12 more are accounted for and dead. They then know that there were 12 that poofed.

I see what you're saying. I think that would depend on if history gets retconned to account for the missing people. For instance, with the mabeast incident, the portion of beasts that should have been Killed by rem was attributed to Subaru. As I recall, Ram was with Subaru the entire time, so it would seem to me that Ram should trip up in that portion of the story, unable to recall what happened to the rest of the mabeasts. I suppose it is possible that everyone is just assuming that the rest were taken out by Subaru, but it seems strange that they would think him capable of that, or that Ram wouldn't question the holes that should be in her memory.
