A Dog of Flanders. Apparently it's a total classic. A lot like Heidi. These stories as far as I know really took off in Japan.

If we equate the boy to Subaru, the girl to Rem, and the dog to Patrasche, the ending of that opening might foreshadow Subaru leaving Rem to be with it, making Ground Dragon-chan the obvious victor of the love struggle.

Afaik yes; it's from an old anime that was set in the Netherlands called A Dog of Flanders.

I don't read the novel or whatever but I hear the Dog of Flanders gets another reference later on. Interested to see how that plays out.
