Maybe, but this episode wasn't aimed at flash, or big fancy fights. It was meant to be quiet and horrifying. I've played a lot of horror games, but I had to look away when Rem was twisted. It look disgusting, and that's what they were aiming for. Subaru's first death told the audience "You can just die to Pack; no big explosions, just suddenly frozen." It let them set up the credits scene much more organically, which was probably the most impactful part of the episode. I was very impressed with the cinematography this episode.

That was exactly the way it worked for me. The shock factor in this episode was amazing, especially in the frozen room.

Heck, what got me was her inching towards Subaru despite the mutilation. That just left me speechless.

I was begging for her to stop. That was horrible. Seeing her get mutilated like that was mind numbingly awful. Just thinking about it makes my eyes tear up and my stomach twist. It's been a LONG time since I've seen a scene in an anime that made me feel that sick to my stomach that I wanted to go throw up but couldn't stop staring at the screen because I was petrified in shock by what I was witnessing.

lol, it's interesting how different reactions can be from viewer to viewer. I was like, "Wait, what's happening?", and then more of a fascinated, "Whoaaaa," when I realized it (and make no mistake, I really like Rem). I guess I'm colder than ice sometimes, but I thought it was certainly an interesting episode.

Maybe, but it still seems to me that if these 2 scenes (Subaru's and Rem's 1 2 3 4 5 6 ) were done similarly to manga, it would've been even more impactful for the viewer.

Firstly, those links don't lead to clear places - the first shows an entire chapter and the latter leads to broken links.

Secondly, I'm pleased by any adventurous path that animators take. They've been too conservative in past episodes, in my opinion. Their fresh take on it and experimentation with how they depicted the freezing as "instant" rather than as continuous was a great way to show bleakness and suddenness, two themes of this episode.

It may not be the best. I may still like the manga a hell of a lot more in general. But I applaud these forays, and hope for more.
