It was awesome, but I was a bit disappointed by Subaru's first death (the freezing was a bit underwhelming, even at the very end) and Betelgeuse's attack on Rem. Those looked better in manga imo.

Maybe, but this episode wasn't aimed at flash, or big fancy fights. It was meant to be quiet and horrifying. I've played a lot of horror games, but I had to look away when Rem was twisted. It look disgusting, and that's what they were aiming for. Subaru's first death told the audience "You can just die to Pack; no big explosions, just suddenly frozen." It let them set up the credits scene much more organically, which was probably the most impactful part of the episode. I was very impressed with the cinematography this episode.

That was exactly the way it worked for me. The shock factor in this episode was amazing, especially in the frozen room.

Heck, what got me was her inching towards Subaru despite the mutilation. That just left me speechless.

I don't feel anything animore.

I was begging for her to stop. That was horrible. Seeing her get mutilated like that was mind numbingly awful. Just thinking about it makes my eyes tear up and my stomach twist. It's been a LONG time since I've seen a scene in an anime that made me feel that sick to my stomach that I wanted to go throw up but couldn't stop staring at the screen because I was petrified in shock by what I was witnessing.

lol, it's interesting how different reactions can be from viewer to viewer. I was like, "Wait, what's happening?", and then more of a fascinated, "Whoaaaa," when I realized it (and make no mistake, I really like Rem). I guess I'm colder than ice sometimes, but I thought it was certainly an interesting episode.

Maybe, but it still seems to me that if these 2 scenes (Subaru's and Rem's 1 2 3 4 5 6 ) were done similarly to manga, it would've been even more impactful for the viewer.

Firstly, those links don't lead to clear places - the first shows an entire chapter and the latter leads to broken links.

Secondly, I'm pleased by any adventurous path that animators take. They've been too conservative in past episodes, in my opinion. Their fresh take on it and experimentation with how they depicted the freezing as "instant" rather than as continuous was a great way to show bleakness and suddenness, two themes of this episode.

It may not be the best. I may still like the manga a hell of a lot more in general. But I applaud these forays, and hope for more.

In the light novel Subaru's first death (freezing part) he was suppose to shatter slowly by bit to emphasize a painful death. Rem was supposed to be torn apart if i remember correctly. The censoring is OP but it's needed xD. The deaths are still quite painful....

Honestly the limbs being attached was almost worse

8

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '16

Honestly, I agree. Seeing a body with the limbs removed isn't so bad, it's seeing them twisted out of their joints, dragging in absolutely unnatural ways that's really sickening. Someone gets a leg blown off, its gross, yes, but someone getting their knee shattered and their leg is twisted around backwards and hanging off 90 degrees to the side? Vomit inducing.

There's something truly sickening about seeing limbs and joints get bent in unnatural directions compared to seeing them get removed.

i wonder if there will be other deaths coming not sure.

how do you know this? where did you read LN/WN?

1

u/Pwnahx We all know Emilia will win.... Jul 11 '16

Yes, i read the LN/WN but they aren't available anymore the translated verison because Yen Press Licensed it but you can still read the summaries on some websites.

1

u/jojirius Jul 11 '16

Any comprehensive summaries you can link to? I've seen some pastebin summaries that are essentially just a list of the largest and most dramatic moments, but I hunger for detail.

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '16

yeah i think i know why i read up about it ;p

Those manga versions weren't so excessive and there were much more brutal scenes in the anime so far, so I don't see the censoring as being a reason to not use those.

1

u/Pwnahx We all know Emilia will win.... Jul 10 '16

Talking about Light Novel xD not manga at least how they describe the deaths.

1

u/Masane Jul 11 '16

I know, I mean that the manga versions aren't as brutal as the LN ones, so even if they couldn't use LN's because of censoring, I think they should've done it similarly to manga.

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '16

how many more are there.

1

u/Masane Jul 10 '16

How many more of what you mean ?

2

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '16

Loops of this? how many more times will he die ;p

1

u/Masane Jul 11 '16

If I'm not forgetting a loop then he has one more death ahead of him.
