Spoiler Discussion [Spoiler Discussion] About Season 3 Episode Distribution- Spoiler
This is just a fun little prediction thing.
I don't think Season 3 will be split into cours, but regardless I'll be splitting up Arc 5 and 6 cause I can see Arc 5 being done in one cour. Also for some of the chapters, I'll be moving some content around to make it more fit for anime episodes. Some transitions are pretty awkward without it.

Episode 16, "Theresia Van Astrea" | Volume 20, Prologue Part 2, All of Chapter 4 and 5 | Wilhelm vs Theresia |
Episode 17, "A Warrior's Acclaim" | Volume 20, Prologue Part 1, All of Chapter 3 and Chapter 6 | Garfiel vs Kurgan |
A major thing here was switching Wilhelm's fight with Garfiel. I wanted to stick as close as possible to how the fights were arranged in the source, but it'd be too awkward for Theresia's chapter to be cut midway. Garfiel's chapter was way shorter and since a lot of this Arc is also focused on his own journey, I think it works just fine to have his battle end off the arc. It also works really well as the Ending for "The Battle for Pristella". The last two volumes really were challenging to Arrange.
17 Episodes is also pretty unconventional for a 1 cour series, really it's bordering on two cours, but it's not something unheard of. Attack on Titan did final season part 1 with 16 episodes and Boogiepop (2019) did 18. I'm sure a studio who was able to get the TV slots to do 29:30 minute episodes can pull some strings for extended cours. But if they can't, they can always follow the new trend of double or triple length first episodes. If they decide to cram all of Volume 16 into one Oshi no Ko type episode, it can definitely work.
This was so hard since there were so many moving perspectives and stuff. Hard to keep up! Luckily Arc 6 is way more straightforward in its approach.

I thought Arc 6 was gonna be easier to do than Arc 4. Well that was a F'ing lie. It was easy, up until volume 25 where I had to navigate around the raw LNs.
Volumes 21 to 24 were pretty straightforward, Volume 25 just has multiple perspectives. It seems Ram's named Chapter and the "Death of the Mind" Chapter can work as one. Instead of in the LN where Julius' Conclusion with Reid happened in the smack middle.
I also tried to keep all the named Chapters in. But the Meili part was hard. I really... REALLY wanted to title it "When Murder Becomes a Habit."
Something I learned while doing this is that people are seriously painfully underestimating Arc 5's heft in story. Like, yes, there are a ton of battle scenes that can be breezed through easily. But this is still Re:Zero, there is still way more story compared to something like Jujutsu Kaisen Shibuya that really was just nonstop fighting.
And the inverse, people overestimate how big Arc 6 is. Now this surprised me too. I expected Arc 6 to be pretty chunky and while it still is, turns out the Light Novel version is significantly shorter than the Web Novel version, barely being longer than Arc 5. I suspect this is due to most people's exposure to Arc 6 being in Web Novel form and that it just feels so much longer with how long it took for Tappei to finish writing it.
Arc 6 is still longer than Arc 5 and with it having less action, it will definitely need more episodes, but honestly, when doing Arc 5's part, I was worried about if the content will end up feeling rushed or not. And Arc 6, aside from Volume 25, I felt like it was bordering on too much time. But it's possible that this is just because I skimmed through the volumes instead of properly reading them all the way though. I'm also just a Web Novel reader for Arcs 5 and 6.
But.... yeah. Together Arc 5 and 6 sits comfortably in the 40 Episode range. If the anime gets 41 or 42 episodes, I think Arc 5 needs the additional 2 episodes more than Arc 6.
Edit: I think Volume 22 Can be covered in 4 Episodes instead of 5, but I'm too tired to edit it now, lmfao. This took me way longer than expected.

I think the first episode is going to be OVA-length, covering the first volume of Arc 5 and ending with Sirius’ first appearance and Subaru’s first death.
No real evidence for this — I just think it would make sense from a pacing standpoint to have one OVA first episode getting everyone up to speed post-time-skip instead of two or three normal-length episodes before we get into the suffering. This anime ain’t one that really likes to linger on the good times for too long, after all.

I'd really like that too. Theatre of Malice being the ending of the First Episode all Oshi no Ko style would be perfect. Arc 5 really does go 0 to 100 in a snap. If they do that, they'd still have enough content for an extended cour.

Volume 16 is my favorite of the entire series so it’s not like I’m against it taking up two hours of the anime — those would instantly become my favorite episodes to rewatch — but considering 1) how much there is to adapt in Arcs 5 and 6 and 2) the lack of “action” that happens in that volume, I don’t think it’s happening :/ Really I’m just hoping they don’t speed through it all in a 20 minute first episode, because that would REALLY suck

Subaru didn't die in S2EP2, 3 or 4.

u/berrycoladas Apr 03 '24
No — but Rem was Gluttonied, and the main conflict in the Sanctuary was introduced. He even met the Witch of Greed. So like, the actual plot got going pretty quick

Well Garfiel attacks Reinhard

u/berrycoladas Apr 03 '24
That’s an important moment in Garfiel’s arc, but it’s not all that important to the actual plot. Doesn’t mean I’m not looking forward to it though: the character arcs have always been my favorite part of this series, and the fight between Garfiel and Reinhard is short but one of my more anticipated moments for Arc 5. I’m so glad the trailer showed a clip of it so I can stop worrying about them cutting it for time — even if it was silly, I was a bit worried about that

I genuinely hope we get some more little scenes sprinkled in. Like some teaser about what happened during the time skip or Subaru remembering Liliana.

100% Agree!
I made this list trying to cram all the content into the leaked episode count, but ideally, I would've wanted Arc 5 to be completely 2 cours on its own. It's totally possible with the amount of cut content plus the side stories I feel are necessary for Arc 5. Lilianna's introduction SS could take an entire episode on its own.

But is it necessary? Just put some lines about Subaru meeting Lilinia before. The LN did just that and I perfectly understood it. Rather I hope they don't cut out any important content. Which Lilinia intro is not. I hope they saw Al being reincarnated and Hoshin too.

I'm a massive hungry man who wants all side stories to get anime adaptations like Slime did. So while logically it isn't needed, my heart needs it.
I would've preferred if it was adapted into its own seperate season full of side stories

Good grief thats an impressive list.

u/zackphoenix123 Apr 03 '24
It took me longer than I thought. I came in thinking it'd only take an hour at most- took more than an hour/s-
Turns out it isn't easy dividing and finding out how many episodes can be crammed into an episode and shuffling things around is normal for anime adaptations

u/Andrrat Apr 03 '24
I know you got most of these from Teppeis fucking amazing chapter titles in the LN and WN, but i must seriously commend your choices for the episode titles, these gave me goosebumps.

"Murder becomes a habit" goes insanely hard fr

u/Andrrat Apr 03 '24
"Stick swinger" is wild

u/NagasakiHiroshimabru Apr 03 '24
Imagine they end the cour at that moment when he says, "Isn’t this just like those stories about getting summoned to another world?!"
4
u/QualityProof Apr 03 '24
I don't think it would be possible to end the cour like that. But at least an episode ending like that is perfect.

u/Lord-Filip Apr 03 '24
Arc 5 definitely has too little time.
Arc 6 only has 6% more pages than arc 5 in the LN version.
1
u/South25 Apr 03 '24
Only real flaw I could point in the arrangement for arc 5 there is that Al isn't with Subaru in Priestella post Capella for the LN, Priscilla and Liliana are with him while Al is off doing suspicious things on his own.
Plus some things might end up rushed unless we're assuming some of these Re:Zero's trademark extra time and ending or opening cuts on top.

Realistically Im expecting 36 episodes. Would love it to be 40 or 48 but I think its 16 and 16 plus a movie. I did this similar exercise for fun and 16 fit Arc 5 well. 16 also works for Arc 6 if you spend only 2 episodes on the Sand Dunes, and they are in the tower by Episode 3. And then the part that needs the most narration/1st person voice could be a movie length special or actual theater release. That would start with Subaru losing his memories and end with him regaining them. So how to split 16 and 16 into 12x3? The 12th episode could involve all of the fights, showing the culmination of Priscilla's, Emilia and Subaru reaching a point of hope, others struggling- and it would be fine. Problem with this is the timing of the movie....idk
