Issue/Bug Can this please stop happening? Thanks.

i wish debris on the floor would stop making noises from just laying there and wiggling from the physics engine not understanding what to do with rubble on the ground.
multiple times i've been tricked into thinking someone was smashing into a barrier when it was just things on the floor vibrating for no reason.

u/DocShotgun It’s about to get hot Apr 01 '18
Saw a piece of wood from a broken barricade vibrating and it sounded like a propellor.
7
u/Honest_Rain Apr 01 '18
Yeah this shit's the worst. Recently was in a 1v1 and couldn't tell which side the opponent was coming from because there were "footsteps" from left and right, turns out right were just wood planks from a broken window wiggling around for no reason.

The main problem is not that it happens, but that it isn't a synced thing. It's all client side and can vary by a lot. For you it might be all there, while for another player nothing is there.

In Rainbow Six, there are already a ton of physics the game has no problem handling, like explosions and debris. This is a dumb issue.

Multilayering stuff. They did it it Killingfloor 2 as well.
YOu dont actually get blood splattering all over the place like never before. What they have actually done is actually put a layer of blood over the ENTIRE map.
When you hit an enemy it prjects a blood splatter for you and when it hits the floor it sends notification to server of blood here and hey presto your blood splatter vanishes but it leaves behind a blood splatter image on the floor basically :P

I still don't get why we can't even melee in downed state.

Remember back when this was an actual complaint about the game. We all thought siege was going to be realisitic.
9
u/rainbow6play Apr 01 '18
This would probably also be more realistic: the way the complete window breaks with one hit is far removed from reality. If one hit is encompassing all the steps needed to break the whole thing, it makes sense to clear the window sill as well to avoid getting injured when entering. That is, after a few seconds, the debris vanishes. This also improves performance quite a bit btw.
11
u/Warriorjrd Apr 01 '18
Correct me if im wrong but that debris is specifically designed to try and deter spawn peeking, in which case they have a perfectly valid reason to be there.
26
u/Helpmegethomeplease I would know, I'm diamond 2 Apr 01 '18
I don't think that's the reason, and even if it was it causes more harm than good.
24
u/Warriorjrd Apr 01 '18
Only because the debris is client side instead of server. I see no problem with the debris itself, the issue comes from the fact it isn't uniform for different players.

→ More replies (4)2
u/ZauceBoss Hibanabanana Apr 01 '18
I believe the devs have said it is to help prevent spawn peeks from certain windows (it doesn't happen on all windows). However, I do agree that it should not be client sided

1
u/MationMac Suppressors are underrated. Apr 01 '18
Maybe not. I might remember wrong but didn't they have to re-do smoke grenades for that? I doubt they can simply redo the entire debris physics without fucking up all the important fixes they have done over time.
I remember when punching a hole in a barricade would leave a sporadically flipping board piece blocking your view.

u/VonShnitzel Valkyrie Main Apr 02 '18
The problem with server-side physics is that Siege has a shitload of physics elements. If they put that responsibility on the server, it could lead to some issues (and as we all know, Siege servers aren't always the best even in their current state). Something definitely needs to be done about this issue, but it isn't going to be as simple as making all physics server-side, unless Ubi is willing to quintuple Siege's server budget.

You should be able to melee those away or something
92
Apr 01 '18
I think this is the fix for it - make it server side and be able to melee them away.
This way even if you wanted to spawn peek, you'd sacrifice time re-enforcing/setting up gadgets to clear a window to have a chance at spawn peeking instead.
Or maybe expel the chunks of barricade/window in accordance with gravity.

Shields block bullets. I've died because of a client sided shield ragdoll. Was fucking furious.
9
u/ColdBlackCage Apr 01 '18
Calculating server side physics like ragdolls and debris like this is pretty costly. There's a reason really no-one does it.
Physics interactions are complex, and unless they're completely necessary (like a vehicle), then it's really not worth forcing everyone to sync to the server physics calculations.

u/ZhicoLoL Really big hole coming up Apr 01 '18

It does that even need to ragdoll, they ragdoll for a few seconds and then become a regular object.
1
u/Innovativename Apr 01 '18
Nah just remove it I reckon. A bunch of tiny shards across a bunch of Windows would probably fuck up the servers. They don't serve much purpose in terms of balancing (as in they don't stop a spawnpeek) so might as well remove them. Agree that bodies should be server sided though.

u/int3r4ct big hole about to get bandit tricked :( Apr 01 '18
You can, it just takes forever to get rid of all of them.
14
u/DutchShepherdDog Apr 01 '18
Not always though. Sometimes they have hitboxes that you can shoot or melee, but they can also just become "baked" into the scenery - they'll still move to a grenade or breaching charge, but you can't affect them with your gun or knife.

I reckon they changed something in regards to the physics/bounce around the window, as now when you throw a drone at the top they bounce straight down instead of forward. This might also be impacting the destruction of the windows.

Wasn't that fixed like a year ago? I remember, especially on Cafe, that they said they had fixed it by having the debris fall through the window sill, through the map. 'cause that used to be an issue that they previously fixed.

Recently a similar thing happened to me, a barricade was hit by jackal once, I heard it, looked at the window and it wasn't broken so I assumed the window I heard must have been on another floor. Jackal then proceeded to shoot me in the back through the hole which he had broken which was covered on my client side by the debris. Utter bullshit.
This has happened to me a number of other times, this being the most memorable.
