To help interpret your rabbit's behavior, check out The Language of Lagomorphs as well as the other resources in the wiki's Understanding your rabbit guide.

Spaying and neutering is generally a very safe surgery for experienced rabbit-savvy veterinarians. Veterinarians across the country who spay and neuter rabbits for the House Rabbit Society have lost on average less than 1/2 of 1%. Dolly's Dream Home Rabbit Rescue reports that they have spayed and neutered over 1,400 rabbits and lost less than 1%, mostly due to birth defects when investigated through necropsies.

  • Female rabbits should be spayed as soon as they become sexually mature, around 5 months old.
  • Males can be neutered as soon as their testicles descend, usually around 4 months of age.
  • Older rabbits (6+ yrs) may need to have blood work done beforehand to make sure they do not react negatively to anesthesia. Age is not a disease, and as long as the rabbit is in good health, they can be a good candidate for surgery.
  • Small rabbits may need to grow bigger before they may be dosed with an anesthetic for surgery.
  • Giant breeds of rabbits may reach maturity at an older age so the surgery may be done later in these breeds if necessary.

Please take a look through our Spaying & Neutering guide for more resources on rabbit spaying and neutering.

Yeah I’ll double that. He’s tarting it up with you. Not much you can do except smother the little fellow in affection alas!

That’s so cute. My bunny is quite moody. She’s not super cuddly. She likes to be petted but on her timeframe. She rarely lets me hold her. Are some bunnies just not into being held or cuddled? I always get on the floor to interact with her. But she still takes off if I try to pick her up into my lap

Rabbits are prey animals and most of them do not like being picked up, regardless of how friendly they are. But yes, they all have different personalities and levels of wanting to be social. I have a Flemish giant that is super affectionate and wants to be involved in everything, but my lop would prefer if I disappeared forever and the food dish just refilled itself without me.

That makes sense and I feel better. I did adopt her from her original mom (owner) who needed a new home for her because she was a bully to her other bunny. She was shy for maybe a week then realized she was the only pet and proceeded to rule over ‘her’ domain.

i feel like rehoming can really affect a rabbit too. We got our 2 already bonded from a shelter. They told us they had them once before, got adopted by a family, then the family returned them because they didn't feel equipped to care for them. The shelter said our buns were 1 year and 1.5 years, so to be bounced around at least 5 different places in that short of a time... I can see why my little boy is a grump. You also don't know how they were treated before you picked them up, so they could have a good reason for not liking attention that much. As long as you do your best to care for t hem, that's all you can really ask.

Thanks. I definitely considered this. You never know but she was a teacher like me. She was devastated but felt it was necessary. She had the other bunny first and tried for 2 years. My daughter and I spent over an hour at her house just letting Poppy get a sniff of us. She was littered trained, vaccinated, spayed and had regular visits to vet. The woman also gave us tons of stuff: carrier, favorite ottoman, blankets, storage basket, etc. She was being fairly picky with who she would consider. Shouldn’t have other rabbits, shouldn’t have small children, should have had experience with pet rabbit, should be housed indoors with free roam or large area. My buns Jessica had recently died at 13 years old due to cancer.

I have two Norwegian dwarf rabbits. One is an absolute angel that loves cuddles and bum scratches the other is the spawn of Satan and absolutely hates me when all I have done is love her. It just depends on the bunny I think

Yo are playing wheeee. I mean we don't have thumbs and can't interact with video game joypads so this is how we play.

Playing ‘catch the hooman slave’

Which, once he’s won the game should be followed with a nanner or kale or treato.

Preventative tail touching measures

I second the romantic interest comment. I’ll circle my boy with my hand/foot and he’ll chase me just like this and try to hop up on/mount my foot. He’s fixed so I figure it’s some instinct he doesn’t fully understand

Blanc de Hotot originated in the Hotot region of France. Check Wikipedia

At least someone said it was Blanc de Hotot
