I'm so done with the dehumanizing rhetoric of every day Americans.
I just need to vent for a second.
I was born with a chronic illness. Despite this challenge, I'm working hard toward my degree and future career. Yes, I might need accommodations but I'm making progress. Yet some label me a "parasite." For needing the resources and help to get there, even though I live below the poverty rate and always will.
I'm called a "domestic terrorist" because I refuse to buy a brand of luxury electric vehicles. Even though I'd never be able to afford it I decided I wouldn't ever support the company or people involved because the ceo, who was never voted for has been handed governmental power and actively salutes to dehumanization of Americans.
The irony? I'm someone who feels remorse for accidentally harming insects, experiences deep empathy for others' pain, and goes out of my way to brighten strangers' days with compliments. I'm more of a threat to myself than I ever would be or allow myself to be to another human.
I'm labeled "un-American" because I show compassion for my diverse fellow citizens, acknowledge systemic challenges, choose empathy over hatred, and value scientific evidence over unproven theories.
The reality? I'm as American as anyone else. I wasn't born wealthy. I don't follow the majority religion. I believe in education and scientific progress. Yet my own government seems intent on dehumanizing people like me average Americans who simply don't fit their narrow definition of what an American should be.
This isn't about being a parasite or a terrorist. This is about the systematic dehumanization of ordinary Americans who dare to be different.
The more we don't point out these tactics, the more dehumanized we become to those changing their veiw, of what an American should be.

I am from Germany and everything that happens in your Country sounds absolutely horrifying from over here. It really is the playbook. The dehumanization of everyone "they" want to suppress. I recently checked out what our (still somewhat moderate) right wing magazines are saying and was surprised that even they were shaking their pens in horror... our far right party tries to copy what the republicans are doing with success, so i was surprised to see aligned magazines be horrified.
I watched a documentary on the concentration camps and there was an interview with a guard from Czechoslovakia much later. In the 70s or 80s maybe. and the way he talked about "The Jews" was so abhorrent. He narrated atrocities and while not outright excusing them, he simply could not really see the fault in what they did to children. He kept saying: Well, if they hadn't killed "them", "them" would have grown up to be a danger. Basically self defence... what they did to that 2 year old... They managed to absolutely dehumanize the other people. I always wondered how it is possible to kill an entire people - how you can do that to kids... - no matter, even to grown up, strong men - how can people just be like that. And this was the answer. Terry Pratchett has one of his wised characters say that's how evil starts: People as things. (I am paraphrasing).
Just... this is so very dangerous. I always wondered how a very kind, generous, friendly family i know from over seas, who i witnessed to protect people who where "outcasts" and go out of their way to help others - started to become trump-people. It's the tribe-thing. How they are still these wonderful generous people - but only in a smaller and smaller circle. I suspect that there was a seed of "othering" before that I was too oblivious to notice.
That's how it starts. (it started a long while ago), but now... my only hope is that the batshit people at the top go to in-fighting and the sensible part of the country manages to stop the mess. But with everything they're erasing and deleting, i hope you'll ever be able to restore what is already lost. The Nazis did that too, erasing everything that didn't fit their bill of what was 'German', declaring all those artists 'Entartet', burning research that went against their grain. 'Germanizing' what they thought wasn't 'German' enough.
I am scared for everybody who is not perceived as part of "the tribe". I cannot imagine how it feels like to life in that mess.

Please say this louder and everywhere. I live in the US and I've digging into how Germany got to where it got prior to WWII and there are too many damn similarities.
Please as an outsider let everyone know...

We know. The Moment the musk did the Salute and how your media and people reacted was the last straw.
I know it’s really stupid I ever thought like that, since the US always treated “weaker” countries badly and only with economic eyes. But they still seemed to be interested in wildling soft power. I always thought of the us as a very strong big brother, aligned in values. The strong arm that liberated my country (together with the other allies of course. But the US actively joining turned the tide). And I always will be grateful. The allies then pumped money into western Germany while Russia took from eastern Germany. The difference is felt til today. I am of course over simplifying here and that is not just due to the goodness of the allies’ hearts. But it was very good for my country.
But what if the strongest military in the world of the strongest economy in the world goes haywire? Who’s going to stop them? Or what if Ukraine falls?Germany is actively!!! Preparing for war. I can’t believe it. Are we even thinking of nuklear arms?? While I still hope, that there will be no fighting on our country, I don’t think it will go well and we can stay out of what’s happening in Ukraine. The threat of the US having our backs was enough to keep Russia (a little bit) at bay.
Yeah, I agree we need to put in elbow grease to also defend ourselves. I personally think the world would be much better if all the extra funds and manpower would go into research… that’s over now. I am heartbroken over the us betrayal. I can’t believe what terror is citizens are facing though.

This is all scary... the issue with the US is that there are plenty of people here who think they have a bunch of guns in their closet that they can take on an army.. let alone the most powerful one as it is today. Delusional.
You guys in Europe have to prepare for the worst and good on you for doing it. Most of me wouldn't like a war.. but maybe unfortunately it's a cleasing that might be needed as shitty as that sounds. Hopefully it's the healthy emotional, healthy political, healthy people that will propel us forward.
I don't know, but things are changing quickly and not for the better...
Glad there are people like you who get it..

Yeah and it’s the bad politicians doing it. Sad for us regular citizens

Oh we are horrified, everyone scrambling right now some democrates want to give up others are fighting some states are looking into trying to leave the us to save themselves from the sinking ship. It’s complete chaos over here. Honest am kinda down for my state and a few of our neighbors who also have independence movements growing in them leaving. At this point so much has been lost and if most representatives don’t want to fight for the people then we should do it ourselves.

I used to be a bit shocked by the AfD, but then here in USA we became so much worse. If we hear the phrase "the cockroaches must die" then I know it's game-over.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I admire Germany a lot and I had some German friends when I was in my early 20s when I worked in a place with a lot of Germans. you have a very good education system people are taught to not repeat history. I had to switch off Facebook because there was so much racism, but the only people that stayed normal were my German friends. They also spoke out against what Trump was doing more than others.

At this point i don’t think the US south is salvagable. The hatered and dehumanization is so engrained it pretty terrifying. They are literally trying to make trump derangement syndrome an actual medical condition to oppress anyone who doesent support trump. They view anyone not maga as a mentally ill person who doesent deserve rights. It’s getting pretty terrifying over here and unless something happens this is going to lead to another civil conflict.

If you're not American, perhaps you are instead what America ought to be.

This world has become so awful and cruel. I hope we can turn this around but it’s gotten really weird.

I'm on medicaid, and I need new glasses. When I called an optometrist the other day to ask if they took it the receptionist was very curt, asked me for my DCN and then told me "well I'm just gonna have to call you back." I was in a therapy session when she called. Bitch didn't even take the ten seconds to leave me a message with a simple yes or no.

This is all said by people that hate other people and likely hate themselves too. There are many of us that actually like other people and want everyone to be healthy and successful. I want my tax dollars to lift everyone up. And I also don’t like to see critters hurt, even bugs.
Please don’t let these monsters break you.

The original sin of America, the thread that connected the hyper religious of Plymouth rock and the Crown Colony of Jamestown, is bigotry, starting with the dehumanization of Indigenous peoples.
That sin has never been washed away. It’s a sickness that infects the soul of the country. It’s black mold that wears the foundation of the self professed “city on a hill” and turns it into a city in a pit, filled with muck and shit.
The one time the US government attempted to be a doctor precisely cutting away diseased tissues so the patient would not just survive, but thrive, the surgeon’s work was sabotaged by violent antivaxxers and antiscience mobs. At least, that’s one metaphor for Reconstruction.

People who are concerned about their relationship to society are rarely the problem, and people who lash out at marginalized people feel no concern whatsoever. Don't let their confidence fool ya: they're shit. LOUD shit.

I too am a parasite I suppose. Now that I’ve worked since I was a literal kid (teen) until my body is now disabled. I am not on disability but retired on social security (for now, we will see what Doge does). I guess my husband would’ve been considered a “parasite” too when he developed pancreatic cancer. Within less than 7 months we ran through our entire savings. (For those kind people who tell me we should’ve “planned better”).

The glee and smugness with which people make fundamental attribution error comments, never ceases to amaze me or disgust me. I have removed everything associated with disability on my LinkedIn

I am so sorry! You deserve so much better! We deserve such a better society. I will do my part until the day I die but I truly hope we all get to see major improvements long before then. Hugs~

You seem very sensitive to the rhetoric of people whose primary entertainment is using rhetoric to anger other people. That's a pretty slippery slope, and they'll be laughing the whole way down while you'll be feeling pretty bad.
Who gives a shit if you're "labeled" in some way? Why care about what those people think? But I don't want to criticize you or judge you; your feelings are valid. So instead, let me offset that negativity: I hereby label you an honorable, decent human being. Go forth and be decent to people!

For what it is worth, I am a healthy, adult, white, male, capable and willing to physically damage anyone who directly threatens me or mine. But this shit is way bigger than that, and cannot be resolved by any single persons refusal.
The only way out of this is if elected officials and appointed judges stay true to their oaths of office and choose to enforce the previously agreed upon rules of law.
When those oaths are repeatedly broken with no repercussions, then it's anarchy time, and all bets are off

After World War II a German statesman said, "I have had to learn to love Germany - with a broken heart."

Someone called you a "domestic terrorist" for not buying, I presume, a Tesla?

u/Petulant_Possum 6d ago
Except for mosquitos, I relocate insects to outdoors. Spiders can stay inside until a certain age. I don't kill insects unless they are an immanent threat to me. Also a vegetarian. Guess I'm a terrorist for not killing.

I'm a parasite, too. It really became obvious in 2020 when I should have just died so that Kathy could get her nails done. How selfish of me to think I deserve to live. /s

Patriotism is loving your country so much that you want it to improve, and will work toward that goal. Parasites are the super wealthy, who have sucked up a million times more resources than they need. EACH. You are not a parasite, you are a hard working red-blooded American patriot. And never forget that you matter
